Harlan Howard wrote lots of songs, including this one, that were mostly recorded by country artists. This one stands alone, in my opinion, as one that can';t be performed correctly after Ray Charles. BTW, I am pretty sure he appeared on the country charts, perhaps with another singer, with other songs.

I find it incredible now thinking back to when I was young that I thought this song was a wee bityy amusing. I can only think that I hadn't heard the lyrics properly the whole way though. thinking about it as an adult, it's a sad song that describes a situation that must have been true of a lot of people. I'm glad to way it never happened to me. Of course who knows what I might have been driven to become had I been brought up in that situation?

This song was written by a Mr. Harlan Howard in 1962. Both Ray Charles and Johnny Cash recorded this in '63. Ray's single peaked at #4 on Billboard's Hot 100 in October of '63. Cash's and other artists who tried this one have all failed. This one is OWNED by Ray Charles! His genius shines in this!

There are still fine musicians with good taste outhere, but in those days this was popular music, you could hear it on the radio and everywhere, nowadays you turn the radio or the TV on, you go to a club or a pub and it´s just crap music, probably reflecting the period we are living now. One great tthing about our times is that we are able to listen to this amazing songs sitting in our living room, just by clicking a button, and it takes you back in time.

This is the first time I've heard the full version if this song, i thought johnny cash was the only singer who sang this and he didn't do the full version.

First heard this on the radio in 1963. Soul and country all rolled into one.

My job sent me way down to south Georgia one day back in the late 80s. As I began to get close to Savannah, I started picking up an old-style country radio station playing this and other great songs like the Boll Weevil Song by Brooke Benton and Roger Miller's Do Wacka Do. I found so much great music that day. A whole era and genre of music opened up that I'd never heard before.

Even tried reading the book of Job in the Bible. Nothing helped. Then I remembered this song and pulled out my recording of it. Ray did the trick!

was fine and thoroughly enjoyable/ dad's fav. singer. Both passed since then.

Ha ha, In Los Angeles area there is only one radio station that plays 60's oldies and they seem to have a limited playlist that does not include this song. Plus I pretty much quit listening to radio music about 25 years ago.
