Charles, Ray - 'Cause We Got Cake (Cakewalk) Lyrics

The spirit's always willing when it's fed;
When it's not fed the spirit's dead.
And if the spirit really wants to dance
It needs a little more than bread
To cure the spirit's ache
Give it a little cake!

Come, you all kick up the cakewalk,
'Cause we got cake.
Lady Luck finally learn to bake.
Who said bread? Kick up the cakewalk
'Cause we got pie.

Here and now, not in the by and by.
Say good bye to trouble and famine
It's time to laugh
Laugh, boy, you can examine
The fatted calf.

Come, you all kick up the cakewalk,
'Cause we got cake.
Ev'ryone who is awake, walk
To cakewalk
'Cause we all got cake.

One of the most beautiful covers I've seen in a while!

Andrew Sacks This piece is rather historic musically. It’s the earliest known piece that has the “shave and a cut” cadence actually notated in printed music form.

Ragtimer95 What is the shave and cut? Interesting to hear this piece is a first of something.

“Shave and a Haircut” is often used as a secret knock by some people or played for comedic effect. If you heard it, I’m sure you’d know what it is. Just google “Shave and a haircut” and you will know immediately. It’s probably one of the most famous tunes/beats as everyone knows it. It’s become so a part of our culture that a lot of people never realized it had an origin.

I assume its the ending of the first strain. That is so very interesting that this piece has the first notated shave and a haircut wow! thank you for explaining, I didn't know what it was called.

Andrew Sacks no problem! I just found out not to long ago as well so I was just as confused as you were at first! And yeah you are right. In the beginning, it kind of repeats and ends the tune. So every time that melody repeats, you know that’s the tune we are talking about it. I found it so interesting that it was even a thing. I just assumed that it was a 7 note passage and there was nothing more to it. Lol but you are so welcome! Glad I could help!
