Chapin, Harry - Song For Myself Lyrics

It's a song for myself
just a song for myself
You don't have to listen babe
it's just a song for myself
But since I fell in love with you
it's brought some thoughts to mind
if we're gonna raise us a couple of kids
I've got to worry 'bout future times
Do I believe that the answer
is still blowing in the iwnd?
I don't believe it!
Do i belive that there are good times rolling
babe, just around the bend?
I don't belive it.
Do I believe that with a little more love
babe, all our troubles end?
Here I am trying to belive in myself
And be a little good
be a little good
be a little good to my friends
It's just a thought that was in my mind
just a thought that was in my mind
But no one's wrote a protest song
since nineteen sixty three
Are we all gonna listen to the moldy gold
and say just let it be?
It's just a song for myself
just a song for myself
You don't have to sing it babe
it's just a song for myself
But it seems our generation
should have something more to say
Are we all gonna sit here
with a stoned out smile
and simply watch the world go 'way?

Chapin, Harry Song For Myself Comments
  1. p.... h....

This song should be on the radio right now

  2. G.... B....

Oh my God this is a gem!

  3. D.... W....

One of my Harry faves. And on guitar is Ron Palmer, my mentor, playing the 2nd version of the Thinline Telecaster, my fave Fender!

  4. G.... G....

I might be wrong but I think this was written for Bob Dylan's "Blowin In The Wind" song because this song mentions year 1963 and it's when blowin in the wind came out.

    G.... G....

I believe everything Harry done was Harry's and his and Robert Zimmerman style, lyrical content, purpose, totally different.

    G.... G....

What I meant was there are some references to Blowin in the Wind. Like the part 'But no one wrote a protest song since 1963' and the release of Blowin in the Wind is 1963

    G.... G....

@Guney Gurler Yes, but he was only referring to Dylan's song, there was no other link.

    G.... G....

That was my point in fact

    G.... G....

He also asks “do I believe that the answer is still blowing in the wind?” Yes, he’s making reference to Dylan and to the music scene in general and their abandonment of the protest song.

Another great one by Harry Chapin.  RIP Harry.  Hello type in "Ron Howard Palace" listen to Opie sing "Lady" and "Reason to believe"

  6. G.... K....

Is there a video of Harry performing Taxi on his first visit to the Tonight Show? I cannot seem to find that. Also, I think he did Sniper on the Tonight Show at some point, too. Would love to see that as well.

    G.... K....

I have no idea, but if you ever find it let me know,

Harry Chapin, another great artist who was taken too soon. Rest in peace, Harry. I'll bet you're still spinning tales, entertaining the hosts of Heaven. Singing songs about mashed bananas, Mr Tanner, and maybe one of my old time favorites, Flowers Are Red. You touched a whole generation, Harry, and you are dearly missed.

  9. M.... ....

Lolz i got you both beat, my sister and i would listen to his vinyl Verities & Balderdash on our biological fathers record player. ah Harry Chapin, god i would love to sing with him, beautiful spirit. Love you man, love you

  10. S.... B....

This was on my old tape, but I never saw him on the Tonight show, so this was a treat :)

  11. S.... F....

I couldn't believe it either, I thought I had heard them all!! can you imagine his notebooks, those would be absolutely priceless!! I am so glad my parents got all their daughters into him!! My kids listen too!

  12. C.... F....

So this is the guy I'm related to ?
This is interesting, I came home ab heard this song and my g-ma told me I was related to him,I guess he was my g-mas cousin ..interesting world we live in (:

  13. R.... K....

I wish I'd been alive to see Harry in concert. Being a 90's kid will do that to you. I discovered him while riding home from school one day, and now I have all of his songs.

    R.... K....

Robby Kile, I saw him in concert a number of times at the Greek Theater in LA. I had tickets to his concert the month that he was killed. I heard about his accident while driving, and burst into tears! He was such a precious person. He had such a rapport with the audience, and afterwards would greet fans and sign autographs until every person was done. I will always remember him!

Living Room Suite is the album that exposed me to Harry, (except for "Cats In The Cradle", of course), and I bought it solely by the cover. I love every song on it, particularly Poor Damned Fool, cuz they all speak to me in different ways. He had such a way of putting his feelings into words; I know no other gifted as he was. I cry every time I hear almost any of his songs. Harry, you are loved and missed.

  15. W.... T....

I love harry but never heard this song before, my other favorite artist is Dylan so when I heard the chorus I was like lol XD (I'm only 14 years old)

  16. N.... ....

@blankppr Haha I did that to one of my brother's Harry Chapin cassette tapes (yes that thing of the past) lol I loved the album Living Room Suite and the song Why Do The Little Girls?. So I would constantly keep rewinding to that song over and over. Definitely did some damage to the tape haha He's always been a constant inspiration to me. Love every part of his music. You still listen to him?

  17. b.... ....

As a young child, I played my parent's Harry Chapin CD so many times that it wouldn't play certain songs anymore. =( I barely even remember that age but I remember trying to play songs on the CD and knowing or feeling that it was my fault for playing it too many times.

  18. T.... M....

Thanks for posting. A talented and humble musician. Never tire of hearing him and it's a special treat to see him on Tonight. If anyone has a video of Harry singing Sunday Morning Sunshine I would dearly love it.....

  19. J.... L....

was this on dvd or something? great quality!

  20. c.... ....

I first saw Harry when I was six years old. He was like another father - his music was always there and whenever he was in town, my parents took us to see him perform. This performance (I hadn't seen it before) brought me back to those joyous times and tears came to my eyes. "I wonder what would happen to this world, if a man tried to take his time on earth to prove before he died, what one man's life could be worth..." - Harry proved what one man's life could be. Thank you!

  21. 1.... ....

Harry Chapin. My idol then. My idol now. I have never seen this clip. Thank you so much for posting it.

  22. P.... ....

I thought NBC erased all the musical performances up through 1976. Where did you get this..?

  23. d.... h....

    what a family,what a man

  24. B.... M....

Harry put his money where is mouth is. Not many like him.
He was the greatest storyteller of his time.
    Thanks for posting.

  25. A.... T....

This guy look like george bush jajaja

  26. N.... ....

Anytime! :) I love everything about Harry and his music. This one is one of my personal favorites, something about this song gives me the chills. I haven't heard "I'm a dirty old man" Now I gotta go search for it haha

  27. H.... S....

Ok!! I thought I had listened to everything Harry Chapin, even some of the stuff thats not on record like "I'm a dirty old man".
I just fell in love with this song (but of course) I love anything Harry Chapin.
    Thanks Nightfall

  28. j.... ....

Im 35 and I grew up listening to Harry Chapin on records and I loved his music and still do.

  29. N.... ....

Unfortunately no, I wish I did now that would be an amazing gem to find lol Or even Taxi. If I do come across it, I'll definitely post it right up!

  30. N.... ....

It's my pleasure!! I'm glad I can help out by getting Harry's music to people. That is so amazing how your grandmother interviewed him, I'm a bit envious too lol. Like Harry said, you can always count on the cheap seats lol I have a bunch of his albums on record.

He's one of a kind, and has helped me through some pretty rough times. I love his music, stories and personality. I visit his grave every year in Huntington. I'm glad to have posted this song, its one of my all time favorites!

  31. E.... M....

Thank you SO much for posting this. I am 22, and I've been a Harry Chapin fan since I was just a babe, when my grandmother would play Harry Chapin records (yes, as in those old 33's) to me. I have only heard of this song and just listened to it for the first time about 5 minutes ago.

My mother had the chance to interview him back around 1976, when she was a college DJ. I am so envious of her, and I would have LOVED to have just seen him from the "cheap seats", much less meet him.

  32. N.... ....

You're very welcome! :) I totally agree with you. This song is very personal to me, cause I can relate to his message in this song. His music is always with me and so is his beliefs. I'm 21 and have been a long time Chapin fan from age 12. He is and will forever be my all time favorite singer/songwriter. I have a couple other clips from various concerts I will post soon. Thank you for watching and keep the change! :)
