Chapin, Harry - Remember When The Music Lyrics

Remember when the music
Came from wooden boxes strung with silver wire
And as we sang the words, it would set our minds on fire,
For we believed in things, and so we'd sing.

Remember when the music
Brought us all together to stand inside the rain
And as we'd join our hands, we'd meet in the refrain,
For we had dreams to live, we had hopes to give.

Remember when the music
Was the best of what we dreamed of for our children's time
And as we sang we worked, for time was just a line,
It was a gift we saved, a gift the future gave.

Remember when the music
Was a rock that we could cling to so we'd not despair,
And as we sang we knew we'd hear an echo fill the air
We'd be smiling then, we would smile again.

Oh all the times I've listened, and all the times I've heard
All the melodies I'm missing, and all the magic words,
And all those potent voices, and the choices we had then,
How I'd love to find we had that kind of choice again.

Remember when the music
Was a glow on the horizon of every newborn day
And as we sang, the sun came up to chase the dark away,
And life was good, for we knew we could.

Remember when the music
Brought the night across the valley as the day went down
And as we'd hum the melody, we'd be safe inside the sound,
And so we'd sleep, we had dreams to keep.

And I feel that something's coming, and it's not just in the wind.
It's more than just tomorrow, it's more than where we've been,
It offers me a promise, it's telling me "Begin",
I know we're needing something worth believing in.

Remember when the music
Came from wooden boxes strung with silver wire
And as we sang the words, it would set our minds on fire,
For we believed in things, and so we'd sing.

I'm one of the Dad's who introduced his son to Harry's music. I like to think that exposing a new generation to Harry Chapin makes the world a little better. May his music lives forever.

First concert I ever went to. I was in sixth grade. My parents took me to see Harry at Spokane Washington. It was just him and his guitar. No back up band. He sang Circle as the final song. Standing ovation. I believe it was about six months later he died in an automobile accident. I was crushed. I secretly cried for days while listening to There Only Was One Choice. I annoyed my two best friends by singing The Mayor of Candor to them while we were on the pep bus. Harry's music still brings me to tears. It is still as timely today as it ever was.

I saw him live 1979 here in Cork Ireland I had heard of him through a friend and he had tickets so I went along. I have never looked back since.

I now have every album and listen to him as often as I can. We had our photos taken with the great man that night in Cork after the concert he changed my life that night for the better, with his songs stories and easy voice.

  20. B.... K....

Thanks for posting this song.  I wish Harry Chapin could have lived, composed, and played music longer than he did, but I'm grateful for the songs he had and, with wistful happiness, I Remember When The Music.

  21. C.... L....

I'm a young buck born in 84. I grew up on Harry thanks to my dad. Love it. Thank you harry for the great memories I have with my father and older brother.

  23. C.... L....

I surely do remember 'the music'.  We were lucky kids -- we had the best of all music.  So glad to be a boomer.  Happy 2014 all!

  24. s.... ....

On this day in 1987 {December 7th} Bruce Springsteen performed "Remember When The Music" at the Harry Chapin Benefit concert at Carnegie Hall in N.Y.C.
It would have been his 45th birthday {he died on July 16th, 1981}...
And on that very same day {Dec. 7, 1987} Mr. Chapin posthumously received a 'Congressional Medal of Honor' for his work in fighting hunger...
    May he R.I.P.

  25. P.... C....

Oh, this is the version I remember.  The "Reprise" is beautiful, but it leaves out the BEST part, the second bridge.  The song is more than just sweet and wistful.  Harry embodies the hope and promise that the other verses recall.  When our voices combine in harmony and purpose, telling us "Begin" we celebrate Harry's spirit.
