Chaka Khan - Be Bop Medley Lyrics

Ooh baby, ooh baby
Ooh baby, ooh baby
You've got me reelin'
You've got me swingin' to your melody

Oh yeah

I never knew a man
Could love me this way
I never knew it
Now I'm happy to say
I'm gonna get some reelin'
I want a lovin' feelin'
Baby, how you blew me away
It must have been love
Wasn't ready for the heavy way
It took me by surprise
Now I'm lovin' and it feels okay
We let our lovin' take us far away

Ooh baby, ooh baby
Ooh baby, ooh baby
You've got me reelin'
You've got me swingin' to your melody

I'm in a hot house

Come on, sailor

I'm calling you, I am calling you
I wanna know do you have to go
Come on, sailor
I'm calling you, I am calling you
Calling you

Come on, baby
Come, I'll be waiting right here
Anyone's love for a price can be found
Come home with me, baby

Casbah

I'm calling you, I am calling you
I wanna know do you have to go
Come on, sailor
I'm calling you, I am calling you
Calling you

Calling you, calling you, hey you

Oh baby, what a feel in the flight
Come on, sailor

What did you say, what did you say
I wanna play, I wanna play
Why don't you stay, why don't you stay
Don't run away, don't run away

What did you say, what did you say
I wanna play, I wanna play

Play your sax for your lady
I'm makin' tracks with you, baby
Play your horn for me, baby
Heaven has hit me
Blind me completely

Ooh baby, ooh baby
Ooh baby, ooh baby

I'll drag the phone right around
There is no, not a sweeter melody
I'll drag the long night around
There is no, not a nicer melody

Mi corazãn
I didn't know how to say (Con alma)
Ooh I love you
Oh what a price to pay
Ooh this time
You'll never run away
You and me, baby

Takin' giant steps, takin' giant steps

Giant steps, giant step, giant steps

    T.... M....

Talent Makhanya I agree CHAKA KHAN is unmatched

  18. L.... R....

Arif Mardin is a compositional genius, The Keybass parts alone ... and oh yeah Chaka Khan

  19. J.... S....

the weird arrangment vibes make it uncanny valley, but damn unbelievable chops.

    J.... S....

    Jamie Mathijsen weird???

  20. K.... J....

    What is Chaka Khan? Everything,simply

  21. c.... l....

Chaka is a human horn, period.

    c.... l....

YES! My family always referred to her as "The Living Trumpet." She is unreal.

    c.... l....

Agreed. I’ve been saying this for years. She and Al Jarraeu are the best human instruments I’ve heard.

  22. M.... B....

    TRUE ARTISTRY!!!!!!

    M.... B....

+Carlton Lewis Brown Jr. AND YOU KNOW THIS MAN!!  Her artistry without a doubt has stood the test of time therefore TIMELESS!! I love it. I love her music. She is awesome.

  23. r.... ....

I had this album when it came out. One of the coolest things I ever heard Chaka Khan sing. Hadn't heard it in over 20 years. I think the great Anthony Jackson is holding down the bass on this cut. Reminds me of when she came to DC a number of years back and walked into Bohemian Caverns unannounced and then sat in with a killin' local jazz fusion band.  It was the kind of setting that one dreams of hearing her stretch out in, and she did. This tune stretches out that way.

  24. D.... S....

Smashing tune. By far my favourite from Chaka, although I love everything from her x

  25. M.... ....

LOVE for many years.  Kudos to Arif Marden and the incomparable Ms. Chaka Khan.  OMG - used to ride my 10 speed in the 80s with this blasting on my walk-man!  "I am calling you...."  Chaka Khan's body of work stands up to time....

  26. L.... D....

    You can't touch Chaka

  27. h.... ....

    Why compare sunshine and moonlight?

  28. T.... P....

    Mi niña Chaka

  29. h.... ....

This is definitely a BOW DOWN MOMENT Performance. Who else could MAYBE do this song? Patti Austin, Janis Siegal, Aretha Franklin... maybe on those 3, but that is about it! I love them all, and cannot believe how they can stretch out when given the chance! This is mind blowing music, and I love having my mind blown!!

  30. h.... ....

I saw Patti A. at a birthday tribute to Ella a few years back, performing with Take 6. They almost took my head off! And then they had to do it again, because it was going to be broadcast... And then they outdid themselves! Patti is amazing, and Chaka just IS..... ETERNITY! I love them both. I think of Manhattan (uptown, High Class Soul) when I think of Patti!... And when I think of Chaka, I just get lost in all of that Chaka-ness and don't know what comparisons to make! Speechless!!

  31. h.... ....

Thanks so much for picking them out. I would never have been able to do that. THANKS! Brilliant choices and performances!

  32. u.... ....

For anyone wondering, the songs she's covering are post-war jazz standards; Hot House by Tadd Dameron, East of Suez by Lou Stein, Epistrophy by Thelonious Monk, Yardbird Suite by Charlie Parker, Con Alma by Dizzy Gillespie, and Giant Steps by John Coltrane.

  33. i.... ....

What a great tribute ... Thank you Chaka Khan!!!!!

  34. i.... ....

I love Chaka Khan, and so did many musicians in the past like, Dizzy Gillespie, and so do many musicians now!

    i.... ....

They all love her (singers, male and female; along with the musicians).

She's the most influential singer since she came out in 1974, hands down/ easy!!

  35. b.... ....

    No bitch.

  36. J.... W....

Patti Labelle has the highest screetch

  37. t.... d....

I went back and forth with Patti or Chaka as my favorite for my HS Yearbook, but settled on Chaka due to her uncompromising street cred whereas Patti is soft. But now let me start trouble. Who could sing this and rival Chaka? How about Al Jarreau ? (I love music competitions and Jarreau is what you call a wildcard)

    t.... d....

For real, this would have been right up Jarreau's alley! Good ear.

  38. I.... S....

    Her Bass Player is AWESOME!

    I.... S....

    Bass players

    I.... S....

Anthony Jacky on bass Steve Ferrone on drums

  39. I.... S....

Bgbukz ... I was thinking .... I think you got me on that one. Was gonna throw Patti Labelle ... or Christine Aquillera at ya ... Nah! ...

  40. b.... ....

Patti does not have the range without going falsetto. And I LOVE Patti!

    b.... ....

PATTI BLAST OUT NO FALSE 💝HER CHAKA is my QUEEN ALSO

    b.... ....

    Earl Rodgers
Patti is an incredible singer, but Chaka does things that are just not normal (vocally)she's mesmerizing.

  41. g.... b....

i guess Janis Seigel and Cheryl Bentyne don't count

  42. M.... ....

All I can say is "She is all of that" !!!! Black folk are not living up to their standards anymore when it comes to singing anymore. It's SO SAD!!! The younger generation have no appreciation for the history behind them or the natural talent.

  43. E.... M....

    I keep hearing Chaka is a contralto ? I don't hear it

    E.... M....

    Tavon Fenwick
Your vocal range is where you are most comfortable and feels most normal to sing. Chaka is definitely a contralto, but has a range that's incredible, many soprano can't hit notes that she can. She's definitely among the few.

    E.... M....

Definitely a contralto. But like previous comments mention, she really does have an incredible range for being a contralto!

    E.... M....

I think she's actually a mezzo spinto SOPRANO actually with amazing control over her bottom. However she's not singing notes like Laila Hathaway, Cher, Cachet, Rolynne Anderson, etc those are some true contralto voices.

Yea Chaka is a mezzo or spinto SOPRANO maybe both is where I'm leaning

    E.... M....

Chaka sings low on select songs, but she usually doesn't do it for the entire song.

    E.... M....

    @Erika McQueen
Play Any Love by Rufus. Listen to the first verse.

  44. M.... S....

    Speechless

  45. S.... B....

@DjembeSauce Arif Mardin I would imagine.

  46. M.... ....

one of the finest musical performances from a male or female, of ALL TIME. This is impossiblly hard to sing - even for skilled vocalists. She (Chaka - has the GIFT) and of course, Arif Marden had the gift for letting her relase that talent. I never tire of this performance - incredible!

    M.... ....

MsJollycholly you are so right, couldn’t imagine any one today even doing this song

    M.... ....

    I agree

  47. k.... l....

    The Great Chaka Khan

  48. V.... L....

I'm soooooo into this song right now! It's crazy amazing.

  49. C.... ....

    YEAH!!!! Go Chaka! You're fantastic!

  50. R.... W....

    Awesome!

  51. t.... ....

The only other contemporary soul/R&B diva that can do this justice like Chaka will have to be Aretha. That's the ONLY one. I can't imagine Gladys nor Patti doing it lmao

    t.... ....

timmy841212 What Aretha??? The one from the 60's or some of the 70's???

    t.... ....

The moody moods for love Aretha

  52. c.... ....

@bgbukz GOTTA GO WITH YOU ON THAT ONE.....

  53. A.... H....

Im losing my mind over this CUT WOW !!!
    Get It gurl !

  54. B.... ....

@bemaniac2 Look up Chaka and Patti singing Sister.

  55. b.... ....

@Blueskywatcher I agree with you Patti has to have the highest natural tessitura I have heard - high + loud too! But chaka is my girl I love the versatility, its like the voice is a horn that wail she has going on

  56. A.... ....

Oh My God. She is QUEEN. I HAVE to learn this song!!

    A.... ....

    Allisongstress it’s actually 6 songs.

  57. t.... ....

Now I "SEE" why she won the Grammy over her competition in 1984... this is what you call TALENT!

  58. B.... ....

@bgbukz It's Patti and I beg to differ.

  59. b.... ....

Patty Austin CAN sing but that Giants Steps part in her Natural? Not at all. Chaka has the highest "natural" Sang all parts, arranged the vocals and won a gramm for this. Fuggetaboutit. Chaka is Queen.

    b.... ....

bgbukz she did NOT arrange this. Arif Mardin did.

    b.... ....

    @Spazzoid Studio
Arif produced, Chaka did the vocal arrangements on this particular song.

    b.... ....

    @Ronald W
Chaka, pretty much does the Vocal Arrangements for all her songs, and had been doing that since Rufus Way back!

  60. d.... ....

    Anyone got some bass tabs?

  61. D.... ....

@Blueskywatcher It's slightly more than that too. It's a popularity contest amongst industry insiders, and often times these insiders are heavily influenced to all praise an artist that makes lots of money and has lots of influence, regardless of the actual artistic content. I mean Beyonce is Jay-Z's "girl" and Jay-Z has all this respect even though he's one of the most boring rappers I've ever heard. Remember when everyone "in the know" used to think Eminem was this great lyricist? Fad worship.

  62. D.... ....

Who arranged this? The way these jazz standard melodies are so fluently transitioning from one to another is very craftily done. The whole band is as tight as can be. Amazing

    D.... ....

    DjembeSauce Arif Mardin

  63. B.... ....

    @minnelli21 I know that's right.

  64. m.... ....

@Blueskywatcher Song of the Year, R&B Vocal Performace or R&B song....I mean Beyonce is okay in my opinion, but her vocal don't do nuthin for me....The Grammy's been lost its ninch as far as merit.....A Popularity Contest is all the Grammys are...for some time now.

  65. S.... L....

@Blueskywatcher They say, your have to be the best
to on the Grammy Awards, I'll say no you don't. Look!
Beyonce maybe a wonderful singer and all that, buy she
is not my favorite singer, I like other singers, and Chaka
Khan is my favorite, Grammy or not.

  66. S.... L....

@Blueskywatcher You know during the seventhties
and eighties, Grammy Awards and Music Awards, useto
be alot of fun watching Grammy Awards, when Michael
Jackson, Olivia N John, The Pointer Sisters, Whitney
Houston, and Chaka Khan is on there.

  67. S.... L....

    @Blueskywatcher I don't know, because I don't even
watch grammy awards or a music awards anymore.
I have Chaka Khan's album: Chaka Khan 1982. When I
listen Chaka Khan's music, it's not all about I'm better
than you, it's about I'm just like you. And, that's one
other reason I love the most about Chaka Khan.

  68. B.... ....

Don't you think that Grammy's are more of a popularity contest? I mean really. "Put A Ring On It" as song of the year?

  69. S.... L....

Well, I don't care what she did, or not. Chaka Khan
should win the Grammy Awards. And, whatever they
did, they will stoopit, if they would have let Chaka Khan
go. I'm telling you, Y'all are going to lose alot of good
people like Chaka Khan and Evelyn "Champagne" King
    that way.

  70. M.... b....

    I CAN...HOLLA! : )

  71. B.... ....

Masterful Genius arrangement(Arif Mardin-R.I.P) and masterful vocal performance legendary Chaka K. Cool

  72. B.... ....

    Patti Austin could.

  73. B.... G....

    she as 10 grammy's

  74. a.... ....

    You missed "Epistrophy" at 2:43.

  75. C.... J....

1984 Best Vocal Arrangement For Two Or More Voices - Arif Mardin, Chaka Khan - "Be Bop Medley" Track from album: Chaka Khan (1982 album)

  76. b.... ....

She won a grammy for BeBop Medley. She has 13.

  77. b.... ....

    Don't runaway,

  78. T.... K....

I've been looking for her too! You can't find what doesn't exist!

  79. S.... ....

I agree, they are corny, but Im pretty sure I remember her winning.

  80. B.... ....

Are you sure she won? Because Grammy had been quite harsh on her and Rufus. When she won her first Grammy it was for something she did with Rufus and she "It's been a long time coming." You know how Grammy's are. CORNY.

  81. S.... ....

She won a grammy for this medley, deservedly so.

    S.... ....

    SharkSport Arif Mardin

  82. i.... ....

Aww, shucks this is my joint right here!!!!
I remember I would pick up the needle again and again to listen to "Giant Steps". I even had a little dance to go with it. I was so cute boppin' around the house listening to Chaka's extreme vocal talent. Dag, this song takes me back.

  83. t.... ....

She 's the best by far!!!!!!

  84. B.... ....

An excellent album from Chaka Khan, mixing tingling uptempo tunes with her characteristic soaring, glorious vocals. "Got to Be There" reached number five on the R&B charts, but it actually wasn't the album's high point. That was the marvelous "Be Bop Medley," which later led hardcore jazz purist Betty Carter to proclaim Khan the one female singer working outside the jazz arena with legitimate improvising credentials.
    —Ron Lynn, Allmusic[1]

  85. B.... ....

Nah, I thought it was "Throw it away".

  86. j.... ....

This song is all over the place, but that's what's so wonderful about it. She could have won even more Grammy's for this whole album.

    j.... ....

jeffreyBboy Arif Mardin. Btw, this is not “a” song, it’s a 6-song medley.

  87. B.... ....

    True. Spot on.

  88. B.... ....

She's definitely unique but let's not forget about Sister Re. Aretha Franklin.

  89. b.... ....

There has never been a female vocalist that recorded a song of this magnitude with this type of vocal arrangement unbeatable. Chaka is the best! If one is better, I don't hear her. Where?

  90. B.... ....

    Yes, many years ago.

  91. J.... W....

Did anyone pick up on the melody played at 4:28? It's "Giant Steps" by John Coltrane. Pretty clever! {*>>>

    J.... W....

    James Watson duhhh

  92. h.... ....

    Simply a wonderful beat!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Hasbraz

  93. B.... D....

Totally awesome...totally Chaka !!! I Love It !!! Bill Deal Jr.
