Celtic Woman - Green Grow The Rushes Lyrics

There's not but care on every hand
In every hour that passes oh
What signifies the life of man
If it were not for the lassies oh

Green grow the rushes oh
Green grow the rushes oh
The sweetest hours that e'er I spent
Are spent among the lassies oh

The worldly race may riches chase
And riches still may fly them oh
And though at last they catch them fast
Their hearts can ne'er enjoy them oh

Green grow the rushes oh
Green grow the rushes oh
The sweetest hours that e'er I spent
Are spent among the lassies oh

The sweetest hours that e'er I spent
Are spent among the lassies oh

Green grow the rushes oh
Green grow the rushes oh
The sweetest hours that e'er I spent
Are spent among the lassies oh

Old nature swears the lovley dears
Her noblest work she classes oh
Her apprentice hand she tried on man
Then she made the lassies oh

Green grow the rushes oh
Green grow the rushes oh
The sweetest hours that e'er I spent
Are spent among the lassies oh

Green grow the rushes oh
Green grow the rushes oh
The sweetest hours that e'er I spent
Are spent among the lassies oh
Are spent among the lassies oh

Celtic Woman Green Grow The Rushes Comments
  1. L.... M....

surprised noone commented that the name and subtitle are wrong in this song. It is Green Grow the Rashes by Scottish poet Burns. Not Green Grow the Rushes (an evolution of the other which became an English folk song) .. wither way very much not Irish

  20. j.... c....

Okay this is freaking me out a lot.. I woke up this morning, for some reason singing this song.. Not instantly but a few minutes after waking up, I just had this in my head and was humming it at first, I didn't know why i had that melody in my head so i decided to add some words to fit it.. I was really actually saying " Greeeen grow the Russian " and doing it with an Irish accent. Just sounded nice like that.. Then I start questioning why im singing it in the first place because i have literally never heard this fucking song before in my life time. Then i go on YouTube to look it up and sure enough there is a song named " green grows the rushen " Which by all means, is basically what i was saying.. Just not " Russian " and the hairs stood up on the back of my neck... These mother fuckers sang it exactly how i was singing it.. I'VE NEVER HEARD THIS SONG BEFORE IN MY LIFE...EVER.. So wtf?! I'm just going to ignore this and act like there isn't something trying to tell me anything. Im not ready for this twilight shit right now.

  21. R.... ....

This is Anglo-Scottish... RB wrote Green Grow The Rashes and it's sung in English. Check out Edie Reader who gives a much better interpretation in Scots/English without all the mawkish faux celtic adornments. After all this was a poem written by a lowland Scot. An Edie sings it in the vernacular as only a true Scot could https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ceQvLX24SE

  22. J.... R....

However, I really like this song. It stirs my heart and emotions and it makes me think, that is the kind of power it has. Truly touching music here.

  23. J.... R....

BUT I adore this version. *Jacqueline happily sings along with the crowd*

  24. N.... C....

its not irish, it's Scottish. Written by Rabbie Burns.

  25. J.... R....

There are like, millions of people on this planet: They could have gotten anyone to sing the album version, but they just had to choose someone who sounded horrible. Its not often when I say that a song stinks, but I really thought they could have done a better job recording the album version of this song. The singer they chose ruined the whole song and made it sound like a piece of trash.

  26. J.... R....

What I am trying to say is, the album version of this song stinks, if you want me to put it flatly.

    J.... R....

    Jacqueline Roberts why?

    J.... R....

But this is the album version.

Unless there's a new one from the new lineup?

  27. J.... R....

This version is MUCH BETTER than the album version. I did not like the voice of the singer who sang the album version, she sounded like an old woman. I don't mean to be insulting, but I think they could have gotten someone more talented to sing the album version.

  28. C.... F....

👍👏One of my favorite Celtic Woman songs!👍👏

  29. E.... G....

Chloe is my favorite one . I miss you daisy . I cry with this .

    Geoff Chaboude the *rashes???*

  35. S.... s....

Irish classic? It's a Scottish song written by Robert Burns. And it's "Green grow the RASHES". Nice version, though.

Green grow the rushes is an English folk song with entirely different words and tune.

    S.... s....

    Rashes? OMG, you're serious?

  36. P.... K....

    Lisa & Chloe.....amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Best song with a moving and heart-warming moment. I really loved it!!

  42. M.... C....

love how white Americans huv tae steal culture!lol

    M.... C....

Both of the women singing are Irish. The audience, however, is American. This has nothing to do with "stealing culture," whatever that means.

  43. z.... ....

Those two have a spical bond you just cant make up.

  44. H.... D....

NO one better than Lisa Kelly and Chloe Agnew!

    H.... D....

Hugo Du Toit Hayes I agree, although Meav and Orla did a good job too.

Sang with no feeling whatsoever...the Americans have fucked this great Scottish song, long and hard

    S.... C....

    The singers are Irish.

  48. M.... P....

Me gusta mucho como cantan Chloé And Lisa Kelly , yours. From France And México '..Love ......!

  49. B.... ....

Actually it was Scotland national bard that wrote this song for the lassies. And the term "Gringo" comes from the Mexicans hearing the Scottish-Americans singing as they faced certain death at the Alamo.

    B.... ....

Of course... but Ireland and Scotland are united by their "Celticness"

    B.... ....

    a man's a man fur aw that!

    B.... ....

    @James Parker So true.

    B.... ....

    @Michael Clark That's him!

    B.... ....

Actually, no!  When France tried to take over Mexico a lot of Scots were hired on as mercenaries.  There are still stories about the Scottish singing so loudly that the Mexicans could hear the French coming for miles, and thus, were always prepared for them.  The term gringo is indeed a bastardization of the words Green Grow from this song, though.  The Scottish who fought in Mexico for money had nothing whatsoever to do with America.  They went to France from Scotland as did Irishmen from Ireland to fight for money for the French.  Irishmen and Scotsmen fought in most every war as mercenaries at that time.

  50. w.... M....

this songs not fucking irish it was written by robert burns lol

    w.... M....

Guys who cares where it's from? Just because they're Irish doesn't mean they're only limited to Irish things. They can put their own twist on songs that have nothing to do with Ireland. Its a good time to stop having a pointless argument and move on.

    w.... M....

Yes Hannah Schultz, U R right

    w.... M....

Scottish. Celtic would be more appropriate if it had been written in Gaelic. Burns was a Scot.

    w.... M....

@Douglas Mcaree Yes, and he composed songs in Scots. Never in gaelic.

    w.... M....

Meh. They've also done "Caledonia," which is Scotland. And?

  51. L.... t....

    Not on an album?

  53. D.... Z....

    I love green grass. O

  54. L.... G....

Green Grow the Rushes was written by the Scottish Poet Robert Burns, he was well know for spending time with the lassies.

    L.... G....

    +Lorna Gillingham Aye.

  55. A.... ....

Great song and well sung, if a bit homogenised. To my mind, the show element in the Celtic Woman performances distracts too much from the music. A lot of people seem to like it that way, though.

    A.... ....

Arkybark I don't find it distracting at all. Celtic Woman is the best female ensemble.

    A.... ....

Really? I find their performances greatly enhance the songs.

Tho it does depend on the singers. These two are among the best of all the lineups.

  56. J.... C....

The crowd joining in this song is one of the greatest CW moments ever.

    J.... C....

Lisa Kelly said they spent a couple hours with the crowd for them to learn the words before singing this one.

    J.... C....

Too bad I wasn't there, I would have loved it.

    J.... C....

    @Terry Blanton hours???

  57. J.... C....

I don't care if this is fake Celtic music, it's really, really pretty!!!

    J.... C....

@Jess Caron Is this new celtic music or a new interpretion of an old classic one? It's a bit too repetative to be new music I think, at least when I think what the old traditional songs were in my part of our country and what the new traditional songs are but I don't know how it goes in UK.

    J.... C....

+MisLuck I don't know, I just know that everybody says Celtic Woman isn't real Irish music.

    J.... C....

The current CW US tour- which just ended- was called Destiny. Meav Ni Mhaolchatha ( a former and recurring member) is now the new creative consultant and vocal coach for Celtic Woman. Meav has used her new found formal influence, to inject CW with a more traditional Celtic flavor and feel. Reference Celtic Woman Destiny on You Tube here and tell the difference right away. I'm sure all who long for more "Celticness" in the music will appreciate Meav's dedication to this effort. ...and enjoy. :)

    J.... C....

It's not fake. It's real Celtic music.

  58. S.... ....

Everybody is singing. It's wonderful <3

  59. h.... j....

I respect the singers and musicians but to me this is the most saccharine soulless version of this song i have ever heard, Disney shite. Celtic Woman is music for your granny.

    h.... j....

+Terry Blanton Terry, I'm with you. No wonder I love it, I am also a Granny. I'm 80 years old !!

    h.... j....

heres johnny you're wrong. It's beautiful! And I am far from old.

  60. O.... G....

Nice song, but the correct title is "Green Grow the Rashes"

    O.... G....

+Olaf Graven OK, so please explain "rashes".

    O.... G....

Thanks, Terry. But isn't Olaf Graven wrong about the title? I believe the correct title is "Green Grow the RUSHES". The other makes no sense.

    O.... G....

+Barbara Foster Rashes is the scottish word for rushes .As has been mentioned earlier the poem is by Robert Burns (Scotland's most famous poet) and is written in Scots..Hope this clarifies matters see lyrics below
    Chor. - Green grow the rashes, O;
    Green grow the rashes, O;
The sweetest hours that e'er I spend,
Are spent amang the lasses, O.

There's nought but care on ev'ry han',
In ev'ry hour that passes, O:
What signifies the life o' man,
An' 'twere na for the lasses, O.
    Green grow, &c.

The war'ly race may riches chase,
    An' riches still may fly them, O;
An' tho' at last they catch them fast,
Their hearts can ne'er enjoy them, O.
    Green grow, &c.

But gie me a cannie hour at e'en,
    My arms about my dearie, O;
An' war'ly cares, an' war'ly men,
    May a' gae tapsalteerie, O!
    Green grow, &c.

    For you sae douce, ye sneer at this;
Ye're nought but senseless asses, O:
The wisest man the warl' e'er saw,
He dearly lov'd the lasses, O.
    Green grow, &c.

Auld Nature swears, the lovely dears
Her noblest work she classes, O:
Her prentice han' she try'd on man,
An' then she made the lasses, O.
    Green grow, &c.

    O.... G....

+David Kidd Oh and you really should watch the dougie maclean version for authenticity of how it should be sung in scots
    regards

  61. s.... ....

In case anyone wants this song, it's exclusive to the German edition of Believe.  Luckily, you can buy the album for cheap on Amazon.de (which isn't too hard to navigate since the layout is set up the same).  The other exclusive songs are also worth it including a Susan McFadden cameo on I'm Counting on You (with Chris de Burgh) and a beautiful cover of Tears in Heaven by Chloe.

    s.... ....

@shuboy05 Hmm, I just noticed it's also on the Barnes and Noble edition which might be harder to find.

    s.... ....

It's on my regular ole bought from Amazon through no special cunning DVD also.  And this is my third time I got the DVD b/c I listen/watch CW DVDs  about nine or ten times a week.  It is also on the Japanese version which is named Awakening instead of Believe for some reason.

  62. S.... R....

    Thank you, ladies. 'Twas lovely!

  63. K.... B....

lovely song, sung by two lovely angels :)

  64. l.... f....

ANOTHER SCOTTISH CLASSIC BY ROBERT BURNS

    l.... f....

    The.Scots.came.from.Ireland...

    l.... f....

The Scoti came around the time the romans were here and are but a small part of the peoples who came to the country now known as Scotland . The vast majority were Picts and Britons both whom predate the Scoti.
Robert Burns was not a Gael he was a lowlander from Ayrshire farming stock on his mothers side and his father was from Kincardineshire just South of Aberdeen. In short no part of this song is Irish nor even Scots Gaelic.

  65. D.... P....

very nice song and good interpretations... but boy, does it get any cornier than this?!? :/

    D.... P....

I have to admit....I love 'cornie'.  God Bless.  MH.

    D.... P....

+Das Piano I don't see corney. I only see and hear beautiful.

    D.... P....

  67. n.... ....

Lisa Kelly and Chloe Agnew, simply brilliant.Perfect harmony.

  68. G.... J....

  69. G.... M....

What a wonderful song, these Celtic Woman are so classy, how can you not feel the emotions. i have truly never heard a sound as perfect as all the woman sing it is Angelic to me and warms my heart. Thank you Celtic Woman

  70. E.... ....

My life would be incomplete without these lassies, oh

  71. A.... X....

Burns was Scottish, "Green Grow The Rashes, O" belongs to the world, but is  Scottish first.

    A.... X....

    @Get ORGANized not pianoized
No it is definitely "rashes" . Rashes is the Scots word for the English word rushes .
The song was written by Scotland's national bard Rabbie Burns in 1783 and was written in Scots as noted below . Dougie MacLean has a fantastic version on youtube ,well worth listening to for the authenticity of delivery reflecting Rabbie's beautiful words

    Green Grow The Rashes

    Chor. - Green grow the rashes, O;

To begin with, the word is CELTIC Woman... inclusive, not exclusive.

  74. S.... 2....

I love this song so much!!! It is a shame that both lovely ladies left but every time I hear this song, I think of Lisa Kelly and Chloe Agnew and wish them well on their journey through life, wherever it may lead them. :)

  75. L.... v....

It's still sad that they both left... 'cause they're the best friends :')

    L.... v....

They still are, and still perform together occasionally.

    L.... v....

Did you notice they're missing a drummer also? I think one of the two married him , and started a family? Would you not retire from the road if that was the next step in your life?

    L.... v....

  76. M.... K....

    So Beatiful Song

  77. B.... F....

It's a beautiful song and made even more so by the hundreds of voices singing the chorus. Lovely no matter whether it is Scotch or Irish.

    B.... F....

scotch is drink Not people, think ye mean scots

    B.... F....

Yes Micheal, somebody else already corrected me on that. I guess my ancestors were Scottish not Scotch. So is the song also Scottish ?

    B.... F....

Barbara Foster Yes, Barbara. It was written by Robert Burns

  78. E.... C....

its because they all sang :D it's amazing, they teach the chorus and everybody can sing along :)
ONLY 8 MORE DAYS !!! :D till their concert in Vienna :D

  79. b.... k....

Beautiful lassies singing "Green Grow the Rushes O", Burns would love it.

  80. T.... G....

Moses was found among the rushes i think what a leader montaineer as well!

  81. S.... R....

And now Chloe is "taking a break" leaving only Mairead of the original five. Speculation if flying thick and fast, but at this moment only David Downes knows for sure who will replace Chloe.

  82. S.... K....

This is male viewpointed? I always thought that it was mother's thinking about daughters

    S.... K....

Yup. From Robert Burns. Well known for spending time among the lassies.

  83. S.... R....

Note to anyone confused at hearing this male-viewpoint song performed by women: No, they're not lesbians. It's a Robert Burns poem, and Celtic Woman has a standing policy of never trying to gender-flip a lyric. See "Black is the Colour" in the same concert.

  84. z.... ....

I am gonna miss the chimistry between those two now that Lisa have deside to start a school for singers.

    z.... ....

Green grow the rashes if you mess with the wrong lassie

  85. k.... ....

I did as well, but I can't remember the exact day. It is absolutely amazing. :)

  86. H.... ....

I saw them in orlando...beautiful song...i was like RIGHT in front so it was that much more amazing

  87. J.... K....

omg i love how the audience sings along with them

    J.... K....

Joseph K Martinez that's the best part!

  88. M.... ....

Me too (but there wasnt only 700 others too). This was so Awesome!

  89. 1.... ....

Yea, but this was the 2nd time I had the honor of singing with them (well, again, me and 1800 other people). Lisa Kelly was doing "Green The Whole Year Round" at the Celtic Woman Christmas Symphony tour last year, and she had to instruct all of us in the audience how to sing the chorus. Singing "Green Grow The Rushes" was a little easier last April when I saw them in concert, as I wasn't high in the upper "ring" balcony afraid I might fall out over the railing (I hate Boettcher Hall!).

  90. H.... S....

Thanx to you postin and thanx to the ladies for a fantastic night yesterday.I´ll always remember that night!! A fantasic concert and many tears that flow..And so many moments of pure gladness hope and love!!! THANX!!!!

  91. 1.... ....

This one *is* on the Believe Deluxe edition (exclusive to Barnes and Noble), along with "Smile" (both bonus tracks).

  92. A.... ....

why do they leave so many beautiful songs out of the CD's? where can I get this song?

  93. r.... ....

I Just saw them and oh my good they were absolutely amazing. I got to sing along to this song as will.

  94. l.... ....

this really made my night last night to sing along in Portland OR ! FUN!!!! :D

  95. J.... H....

Agree on both counts. If anyone has an opportunity to see something, anything, at the Fox in Atlanta, by all means do it. It is in a word... fabulous.

  96. 1.... ....

A few nights ago, I GOT TO SING WITH CELTIC WOMAN (well, me and about 2,400 other people in the audience)!

    1.... ....

    1sorryham Congratulations! 👍👏👍👏👍👏👍👏
