I know and I agree with your point! Whites can have soul, that's why I pointed out Lisa Stansfield, but the bottom line is.. to find a white artist with soul is a lot harder than it is to find a black one. Just as it is much harder to find a black person with a good voice for country/folk songs. It is not a criticism, it's an acceptance that years and years of cultural differences has got us to this point. The sooner we all become less precious about race the better imho. You are spot on about the interpretation. However, being black is to do with it. Black singers are better soul singers. It'd be like asking Whitney to sing a Reba McEntire song, it'd be brilliant, but it wouldn't be country. I think that is what he means. Black people and white people do seem to have different voices (bar a few, Lisa Stansfield etc). Still a brilliant interpretation by Celine.

So here is Celine Dion taking on a soul standard and rendering it exactly the way you'd expect a Quebecois pop singer to render it. Celine's always been a blowhard, both literally and figuratively, but her habitual overheated, overblown, overdone style is actually well suited to this song, and in fact in contrast to some of her other work, she sounds positively restrained here.

I think the haters don't like that her voice isn't gritty or wretched perhaps like Christina Aguilera's screeches but Celine's voice is pure beauty, I like the nuances and her soft voice just as much if not more than any belts which she is more than capable of doing better than most any other artist around today
