This wasn't about a love that ended. He said in an interview it was about his relationship with the music industry that basically used and abused his talent for years. I am a huge fan of Cats music and am always amused when people read more into his music than was the real reason behind a song.
Well, in this case we should have read more into this song because it had a deeper meaning than ending a love affair with a girl. I guess most of his songs weren't really about girls but about himself.
@Hannah Doll your response made me think about another song on this album, Randy, that many people have totally gotten wrong as to what the words mean. My theory is he was writing about his decision to convert, not homosexuality or a forbidden sexual love of any kind, but a love for Allah and the Muslim faith, which back I'm 1978 was totally alien to his fan base.
Just wonderful - few songwriters can express our emotional roller coaster rides in life like Jusuf/Cat Stevens. Perhaps Todd Rungdren and Paul McCartney and John Lennon and Randy Newman.
Last he wrote as Cat Stevens. Yusuf has written songs about love ,not passion. He will never perform this one unless he rewrites the lyrics as he has already done..

It was the last one, last.album as Cat Stevens 2+ months later he married, but it wasn't for love but an acceptable Muslim wife. I assume he came to love her and has stayed faithful, but I miss the "passion" of Cat.
