I first heard this song with The Little Willies. It is a good band when you don't know much about country or folk and you need somewhere to start.

I like the original slower version, myself. captures the haunting melancholy.

Not sure if you found out in the 10 years since you posted, but this song was featured on his albums 'the blue train'. No idea if it's original, but there are several versions he made, and you can find the demo version on pandora

The second version is a lot slower, I think. And it was A.P. "Red" Kernodle who played pedal steel guitar on it. And here we have Luther playing the sharp solos!
