Cash, Johnny - San Quentin Lyrics

San Quentin, you've been livin' hell to me
You've blistered me since nineteen sixty three
I've seen 'em come and go and I've seen them die
And long ago I stopped askin' why

San Quentin, I hate every inch of you.
You've cut me and you scarred me through and through.
And I'll walk out a wiser weaker man;
Mister Congressman you can't understand.

San Quentin, what good do you think you do?
Do you think I'll be different when you're through?
You bend my heart and mind and you warp my soul,
And your stone walls turn my blood a little cold.

San Quentin, may you rot and burn in hell.
May your walls fall and may I live to tell.
May all the world forget you ever stood.
And may all the world regret you did no good.

San Quentin, I hate every inch of you.

That was back when convicts were still convicts no snitching no checking in to pc because they owe 100 dollars worth of dope this was also before the SHU when gangsters were able to walk the yards without fear of being locked in solitary for 30 years and this was right before mass prison overcrowding or private prisons so the food and services even though shitty were still a lot better than prison conditions today

    S.... S....

Yeah from what i, ve garned the crims were of a higher caliber but the prisons themselves were daily hellholes... They didnt really need the shu, and i kinda doubt there weren't junkies running up debts getting got cause of it. Still like old school cops who are still scumbags there are far sight straight up compared to todays pimply little cowards with thier sadistic streaks and government backing with an armful of tattoos and beards like they cant figure out what side they on. Shit even in half a decade its gotten worse. I went in for a brief 10 month stint last year and was..... Just like wow. Its that fucking ice shit. Harder cops and harder prison conditions produced a harder crim who stood by a code. Right or wrong. Today these mumble rap looking gooses seem to leave their spines and balls in property, and at a police station....the amount of plastic gansters that roll over on each other is crazy. Shouldnt have put your head in the game if you didnt wanna play it out. Most should stick to listening to there gansta rap instead trying to live it out.... Cause the youth of today just embarrass thier generation when they do..... Sorry i totally went on a rant there. Well i, m just glad those days are done. And that shit last year was a set up. Which is exactly why all charges were dropped. Fucking plastic gangsters. Anyhoo. Peace

  21. G.... L....

    Is this concert on DVD

  22. W.... P....

He could've been singing about Eastham Prison Farm in Lovelady Texis. The one Robt. Redford made film Brubaker.

  23. E.... W....

This song is incredible, but what really makes this entire album so moving is the response from the audience.

    E.... W....

    you mean the criminals??

    E.... W....

@Feneco feneco Well, yeah. Johnny Cash was a very vocal prison reform advocate at a time when "law and order," "tough on crime" politics were beginning to take center stage. He encouraged his listeners to empathize with inmates, and his live prison albums were a big part of that. So yes, the response from these men is something I find very powerful.

  24. D.... H....

I used to do prison ministry and I did songs similar to Johnny Cash including Ain't No Grave

  25. D.... s....

So, this guy performed this song in prison that houses the most notorious murderers in history of California?

    Dude has my respect.

  26. N.... -....

    0:40 Damn Mark Zuckerberg :O

    N.... -....

As a convict quite interesting. /CD

see you on the other side Johnny 👍🏻

    C.... G....

    You were there?

  29. A.... e....

    An American Icon for sure!!

  30. J.... H....

They've been incarcerating law-breakers from time imimorial and it hasn't stopped a fucking one. 60% of prisoners have mental health issues and they haven't cured a fucking one. But it keeps the lower middle class in a job so I guess that's why.

  31. T.... K....

Sheer impressive power...as always!!! Bless you, Johnny Cash!!

  32. m.... t....

    what a legend! John, RIP.

  33. a.... h....

I love Johnny Cash's voice. Looking at these men's faces, not knowing anything about them, whether their incarceration is justified or not, makes me realise they are, after all, human beings. This must have been a great event for them.

  34. C.... L....

Johnny looks like AMLO the president of Mexico

  35. M.... n....

You've got the date wrong in the description. It says 1996 but should be 1969.

  36. B.... ....

This is the type of thing Johnny Cash did that drove right wingers crazy. He wasn’t always gospel and Jesus. There was a very different side to Johnny Cash.

    B.... ....

Shut the hell up .. 2 comments into this video & someone is bringing up politics. i throw up my hands

    B.... ....

    Chaos Live
What exactly do you think this performance was about genius. Are you not listening to the lyrics? Which part of “Mr. Congressman you can’t understand” do YOU not understand? We need serious prison reform even to this day. Right wingers just like to bob their heads to the melody, but don’t listen. Why don’t you wake up and join the fight against for-profit prisons? Oh wait, you can’t understand...

  37. A.... M....

I stood watch/guard duty at USN Treasure Island 1967, two hours a night, looking west the island San Quentin loomed large. Very cold metaphysically.

  52. A.... M....

    Hes a legend!

  58. G.... 7....

J R CASH you are a legend Sir the world was so lucky to have You

  59. M.... J....

And to think that he had only written the song San Quentin the night before and had not rehearsed it that much before he sprung it on this crowd. The only thing more impressive than this would be if Johnny decided to take out some lyrics a songwriter had written for him, but which had no music, and decided to perform it for the first time (despite having never performed or rehearsed it at all with the band.) That would be really impressive. LOL

  60. T.... ....

After this Johnny said the guards were shitting their pants, he could have instigated a riot easy.

  61. D.... R....

    Thank you Johnny.

  62. L.... B....

    🎶🎵👑❌⭕❌⭕❤💯

  63. J.... K....

Anyone know who wrote this song?

    J.... K....

    Cash of course

  64. C.... ....

So by this logic he should have welcomed all these fucking rapists and murderers into his community?? These were dangerous individuals and here is singing, antagonising the wardens and police and criticising the prison system that keeps these nonce cases and violent murderers under lock and key which allow him and other members of society to live our day to day lives safe?

    C.... ....

Relax, he was invited by the wardens. These events keep the prison a safer place genius as the prisoners aren't as resentful. Good thing clowns like you aren't in charge.

    C.... ....

    Good point.

  65. M.... K....

    legendary song from my past!

  66. H.... M....

    The best !
