Cash, Johnny - Green, Green Grass Of Home Lyrics

The old home town looks the same,
As I step down from the train,
And there to meet me is my mama and my papa.
Down the road I look, and there comes Mary,
Hair of gold and lips like cherries.
It's good to touch the green, green grass of home.

The old house is still standing,
Though the paint is cracked and dry,
And there's the old oak tree that I used to play on.
Down the lane I walk with my sweet Mary,
Hair of gold and lips like cherries.
It's good to touch the green, green grass of home.

Yes, they'll all come to see me,
Arms reaching, smiling sweetly.
It's good to touch the green, green grass of home.

Then I awake and look around me,
At the four gray walls that surround me,
And I realize that I was only dreaming.
For there's a guard, and there's a sad old padre,
Arm in arm, we'll walk at daybreak.
Again, I'll touch the green, green grass of home.

Yes, they'll all come to see me
In the shade of the old oak tree,
As they lay me 'neath the green, green grass of home.

A little on the nose for some inmates I'm afraid

Sorry Johnny but Tom Jones did the best version. Rare for me to say someone did a cover better than Johnny Cash.

    Thats a negative

    SIlverFang Johnny did it live.....

But it's the conditions in which Johnny sang this song that makes it infinitely better than the Tom Jones version. Don't get me wrong, Jones' song is stunning, but Johnny performed it live for the very people who might benefit from hearing it—the very people who would feel it. It's one of those monumental moments in music history that almost defies description. It just is, and you listen to it, and experience it, and feel it, as all those now long dead prisoners once did. The fact that it's captured for us to hear for all time, or as long as there is a recording of it to go around, is just incredible. That level of compassion and understanding is nearly absent in our current era.

Johnny's number is much more somber compared to that of Tom Jone's. The second "dreaming" verse is much more better delivered in this cover as less of a spoken word piece too. Yes it may be missing on a bomb chorus and drums, but given the circumstances of the performance this version is perfect.

@CurbYour____ The last verse is the one that kills me every time. The delivery of the plot twist with Johnny's voice is perfect. There's a sadness to it that is just wonderful. So dark, and it's something that the Tom Jones one just doesn't have.

Doubt that there were any dry eyes when Johnny got to this number.

    its such a sad song...
I heard here on youtube a version of 'long black veil' where he laughed on live concert because he heard sobbing from the audience, haha
