Cash, Johnny - Girl In Saskatoon Lyrics

I left a little town
A little south of Hudson Bay
I couldn't find a thing, to make a rounder want to stay
I fought the wind across the baren waste in the crystal doom
Going for to marry the girl in Saskatoon

I'm glad I realized that no one could take her place
My heart was beating for her like the winter beat my face
But knowing that I'd see her made my spirit bright as June
I'm freezing but I'm burning for the girl in Saskatoon

South and West and following the cold December sun
I bedded down in the Carragana when my daily trek was done
Then up and pressing onward by the light of the morning moon
A prodical returning to the girl in Saskatoon

Then I found the trail that had packed beneath the snow
I made the final miles where the prairie lillies grow
The steeple on a church glistened by the prairie moon
I'm freezing but I'm burning for the girl in Saskatoon

My journey was forgotten
When I held her in my arms
My wonderlust was stiffled
By possesion of her charms
And even beneath the steeple
Where we couldn't wait till June
I found eternal spring with the girl in Saskatoon

  2. D.... E....

    Anyone here from La Ronge?

  3. R.... ....

"Bedded down in the caragana"?! Caragana bushes are chock full of thorns - I don't think the songwriter had ever seen one.

    R.... ....

I think Johnny knew... he used it as a metaphor for hardships on the way to get to her.

  4. M.... D....

    Fucking rez chicks man

  5. P.... S....

Saskatoon - what a fantastic name.

  6. L.... v....

Farm kid from about 200 kms northwest of Saskatoon. Doesn't sound close but on the Canadian prairies it is. This song has a sad and dark history. Google Alex Wiwcharuk, she was the original Girl From Saskatoon if you don't know the story. It'll break your heart.

    L.... v....

That can't be true. This song was released in 1960, but she was murdered in 1962. I'm sure many people have used the song to add poignancy to her murder, but it wasn't originally about her. (eg. a book about her was called Girl From Saskatoon)

  7. T.... B....

This song is about a girl that ended up being murdered. It's actually very sad . . .

    T.... B....

This song is not about the nurse that was murdered, that was in 1962. Johnny Cash and Johnny Horton wrote this song around 1960. Johnny Horton died November 5th 1961, couple of weeks later Johnny was in the recording studio and recorded girl from Saskatoon. Johnny and June and their son John Carter, had a cabin in Northern Saskatchewan where they would vacation from time to time and fish. The Cash's enjoyed Northern Saskatchewan and even help raise money for an arena to be rebuilt.

    D.... M....

Duane Marxen Alexandra wiwcharuk is the girl he's talking about. Oh and the murder part is very real. Her murder has never been solved.

  21. D.... ....

I'm burning for a girl from Saskatoon, we just moved in together :)

    D.... ....

Was she serial killed like the girl this song was wrote about? Feel good. This song has a depressing truth associated with it.

  22. .... 2....

    Замечательно!

  23. T.... ....

    @zink220
I would love to hear more about that claim; that does sound a bit far-fetched, but most awesome if it is indeed true.

  24. P.... W....

@ThatsMrMoronToYou Lol, Canada was "British America" before it was "Canada" back in 1870 and beyond. And i i m an American.
John wrote the song with not only his friend, but with the one and only Johnny Horton, who happened to be one of his best friends..

    P.... W....

Usually Americans and geography got me like..."My god he's dumb". Props...but... technically Canada was not a united country till 1949 when Newfoundland joined :) The more you know *insert shooting star here*

  25. T.... ....

@TheZekemeister Fop, is geography not taught in your schools? America is a Continent. Canada is a country(the largest)that occupies the northern portion of it. If you missed this bit of information at school, perhaps you should double-check any map or globe. ...just sayin'...

  26. w.... ....

This song is about Saskatoon, Saskatchewan he explains it on the Personal File album about how him and a friend wrote it while driving back from a show in Saskatoon

  27. T.... ....

@myfriendsfordinner Sorry to butt in, but Saskatoon is in America. Honest. Look it up.

  28. e.... o....

@sotthapana okay, honey, Saskatoon is not American. And no, not much of the West side is ghetto, a few streets. And everybody drives an over sized truck because all of the men work in the trades, where it's pretty much required to have one. You don't know a thing about Saskatoon, go back to BC.

  29. B.... F....

I moved to Saskatoon recently for school and it's not a total dump in all areas, but it's a lot more "American" than what I'm used to. Much of the West side is a ghetto and everyone seems to drive an over-sized truck. People here are a little simpler than other parts of the country. They don't seem to know what good food is (the restaurants are terrible) and they don't give a rat's ass about the environment.
Looking forward to moving back to BC in a few years... LOL

  30. K.... K....

anyone know where Johnny stayed in Saskatoon the night he performed at the Arena?

    K.... K....

Ken Kun this was a song written by Johnny Horton and Johnny Cash, while on tour. You can hear the J.Horton influence.

    K.... K....

She wrote this about a girl who was murdered by a serial killer. Feel good.

  31. M.... L....

    We miss you Johnny!

  32. M.... ....

    What a dump!

  33. J.... K....

Eugene Hutz (from Gogol Bordello) played and sang this song at the Gogol Bordello concert in Saskatoon on October 4, 2009. It was quite good and the crowd went wild.

  34. C.... ....

is this the first take of this song?it doesnt sound like the others at all

  35. j.... ....

    nice!!!

  36. C.... M....

    Saskatoon , Saskatchewan,CANADA.....Right on Johnny.

  37. b.... ....

    Pretty cool Cash tune here.
