Cash, Johnny - Don't Think Twice, It's All Right Lyrics

It ain't no use to sit and wonder why, babe
It don't matter, anyhow
An' it ain't no use to sit and wonder why, babe
If you don't know by now
When your rooster crows at the break of dawn
Look out your window and I'll be gone
You're the reason I'm trav'lin' on
Don't think twice, it's all right

It ain't no use in turnin' on your light, babe
That light I never knowed
An' it ain't no use in turnin' on your light, babe
I'm on the dark side of the road
Still I wish there was somethin' you would do or say
To try and make me change my mind and stay
We never did too much talkin' anyway
So don't think twice, it's all right

It ain't no use in callin' out my name, gal
Like you never did before
It ain't no use in callin' out my name, gal
I can't hear you any more
I'm a-thinkin' and a-wond'rin' all the way down the road
I once loved a woman, a child I'm told
I give her my heart but she wanted my soul
But don't think twice, it's all right

I'm walkin' down that long, lonesome road, babe
Where I'm bound, I can't tell
But goodbye's too good a word, gal
So I'll just say fare thee well
I ain't sayin' you treated me unkind
You could have done better but I don't mind
You just kinda wasted my precious time
But don't think twice, it's all right

For all of you have have been observant enough to notice that the melodies are similar on this song and 'Understand your Man', good for you. I am Johnny's daughter from his first wife, Vivian, and kmow the story first hand from dad. He wrote 'Understand You Man' while not in a real good mood. as you can tell, and was having a hard time coming up with a melody which for him, was a frustrating thing. He could come up with them so fast. So he call Dylan and said, 'Hey, Do you mind if I use the melody of yours from 'Don't ThinkTiwce' for a son I', writing? I just can't seem to come up with one"? Dylan said, "I don't give a shit"... this story was told to me word for word by my dad one day when I was simging 'Don't think Twice' in the kitchen and asked him why I always ent into the words to 'Understand Your Man' every time I sang it. He told me this story himself!! I didn't doubt him for a second. Sounds just like both of them. I laughed all day. So yes, it's not just similar, it's exactly the same! Thanks for all of you still listening to my dad and keeping him alive. It means everythng to myself and my siblings. I'm sure they wouldn't mind me saying so for them. xoxo Cindy Cash

    C.... C....

Cindy Cash wow thanks, I have had this question for about 35 years, I’m 43 now and been a cash fan since I can remember.

    C.... C....

Thank you so much Miss Cindy! I am a singer here in Nashville and we cover Understand Your Man in almost every show. It's good to have the real story because I've been a life long Dylan fan and had thought that it was probably just as you described it.... God Bless You!!!!

    C.... C....

God bless you Cindy I play a lot of your dad’s music in my band I want like everyone else to keep his music alive RIP Johnny

    C.... C....

  24. A.... V....

That,s my boy...good job Johnny, God Bless You where ever you are...

  25. J.... K....

This may be old news but this song was written by Peter, Paul and Mary. Dylan covered it. As did Waylon Jennings.

    J.... K....

I'm sorry sweetie but if you do a little research I think you'll find it was Mr Dylan what wrote it... Try this web site: (There's a space at the end of each line that's not needed):

    Thank,s AlanPaladin...you made my day...

  29. S.... o....

    LOVE MY J.R. CASH

  30. L.... B....

My favorite rendition of this song!! Except: one of his verses makes you wonder who's leaving whom ("I wish there was something *I* could do or say to try and make *you* change *your* mind and stay"). Still, I think this rendition has more gravity, for lack of a better word, than Dylan's.

  31. D.... V....

Isn't this the same tune as "Understand Your man"?

    D.... V....

Dutchman Van Dyke Many say that it is, but I’ve listened to both, and I just don’t hear it

  32. f.... ....

The first bit of sound out of this, I thought, "Yeah, that's Cash." He's definitely got a sound.

    f.... ....

    Forsure

    K.... E....

    Poppy Tom
Hell no. I played it at your divorce hearing...and mine.

    K.... E....

Nope! I'm thinking of posting this on your FB wall 3 months after divorce.

  37. B.... S....

Hi, good people. I know it's not cool to advertise like that, but hey! - no risk no gain, right? I just thought, that maybe some of you might like my cover of this song. Give it a try, thanks!

  38. I.... G....

The Walking Dead season 7, eps 2 brought me here. Sorry Johnny, TWD version makes an ass outta yours!

  39. T.... ....

what genre would this fall under?

  40. R.... ....

Best cover never recorded: Johnny Cash covering Social Distortion's Ball and Chain.

    R.... ....

Riskmangler dude yeah that'd be dope c:

    R.... ....

Imagine Social Distortion playing "God's Gonna Cut You Down"

    R.... ....

Yes that would have been epic! Wow!

  41. p.... ....

My twin brother performed and recorded this song before he passed away in 2004. It will always be a classic in my mind, if only for personal reasons.

  42. A.... S....

Judas Priest is better than Iron Maiden, and Iron Maiden's the shit

  43. L.... ....

Great song, does this melody sound anything like "Understand Your Man" to anybody else outside myself?

    L.... ....

That's the first thing I thought when it started. He did a great job with this.

    L.... ....

I've listened to both and I just don't hear the similarities.

    L.... ....

Johnny wrote Understand Your Man. He said he was so inspired by Dylan's Don't Think Twice, that he had to write it. So yes, I agree. As a matter of note, Rodney Crowell did a combination version, at Johnny's Memorial concert 2003.

  44. t.... ....

Always loved Jonny but come on this version is not better than Dylan's

  45. R.... D....

John and Bob's versions are great((-:

  46. K.... P....

Hello there, Love your vid! I see you’re enthusiastic about indie music, and I would be thrilled if you could possibly check out mine You can check it out here. It's super 70's, psychedelic and dark. https://youtu.be/N-R_Y0Qh79c

  47. T.... D....

me thinks this is better than dylan's original ( and i think dylan's is amazing)

    T.... D....

The Dudemeister1006 I like the one by Peter, Paul and Mary the best.

    T.... D....

The songwriting sure but Bob Dylan is a trash singer. Johnny knows how to actually sing.

  48. C.... &....

40 people thought twice and it aint alright

    C.... &....

I see what you did there. Well played, Sir!

  49. C.... &....

He made this song his own. As he did with all his covers.

  50. p.... ....

similar to Sea of a Heartbreak

  51. J.... C....

The greatest musican in the music story

  52. G.... ....

what a legend he will be in are heats for ever

  53. R.... R....

A perfect Bob Dylan song for Johnny. He does a good cover.

    R.... R....

I agree. I think this is better than Dylan's.

  54. p.... c....

Women !  The Best and the worse Times of my life !!!! hmm all I can do is Pray I die in my sleep  ")

  55. s.... ....

Is it on purpose that the tune is so similar to that of "Understand Your Man?"

    s.... ....

It seems like a sequal to it really.

    s.... ....

Exactly what I was wondering! Hah

    s.... ....

Don't think twice came first actually, it's a Bob Dylan song and Johnny used the melody when he wrote Understand Your Man.

    s.... ....

    +bob smith you are correct...

  56. M.... o....

Great version of a song composed or performed by Bob Dylan.... Now included in The Bob Dylan Project, Email: [email protected] Twitter: David George Freeman @BobDylanProject Excellent.

  57. A.... ....

Don't take literally what I said. Of course he understood the lyrics but it sounds a too lively music considering that when Dylan recorded this song he said that it is an internal conversation trying to convince himself that it ain't no use to go on sad.
I recomended to see the Javier Richart's cover because even though it is a homemade recording I think this guy expresses very well the feeling of the song.

  58. A.... ....

Best cover I've found is by Javier Richart. You should watch it.

  59. A.... ....

Joan Baez did the best version in the 60's. Then Bob Dylan's original recording in his record The Freewheelin' is the second one. Johnny Cash didn't understand the meaning of the lyrics.

    A.... ....

¿Really? He seems to be singing a dancing song.

    A.... ....

@Adylansfan watchu talkin bout willis? The whole point of the song is to be bittersweet. He's sad, yet relieved and grateful for the good times.  I think Cash captured that feeling.

    A.... ....

Who are you to say what the man in black understood? He's one of the most influential Americans to have ever lived. You probably have a neckbeard and a keyboard jammed with cheeto dust. I'm pretty sure he is capable of understanding lyrics as good as anyone else. Especially you.

    A.... ....

    @Adylansfan
    a dancing song?

    A.... ....

@Adylansfan Please, my dear, don´t try to tell others and mostly not yourself about Johnnys understanding - you´re "a Dylans fan" and build surely your personal taste on the fact that Joan Baez sung it much better because she was his mistress - but it´s a male song which you don´t seem to understand yourself ... listen to the lyrics twice - try to understand them and tell Joan to keep herself to female songs ...

  61. T.... Z....

You guys are going to think i'm an asshole but give a listen to Ed Sheeran's cover of the song, pretty damn good.

  62. t.... r....

Done it better than the guy who wrote it. Yep, that's Cash.

    t.... r....

    Okay sure.

    t.... r....

tim richie I'm a huge Cash and Dylan fan, but this isn't even on the same level as Dylan's original. Very good, but Dylan's is godly

    t.... r....

It's not better than the original. Not even close.

    t.... r....

i’m proud of the guy who wrote it

    t.... r....

Folk vs Country-Western. They’re done with different sensibilities in mind. I think they’re both great.

  63. s.... ....

    gotta love bob dylan

  64. N.... A....

  65. D.... C....

My very favorite song for the past 40 years.  Good version here.

    D.... C....

    Dian Cheyne Lieber 42

  71. A.... S....

Why is it that Johnny Cash always covers the best songs!?! Oh I think.. Maybe he knows lyrical genius and puts a spin on the best quotations of history... NIN comes to mind but Kudos Man in Black for getting the wisdom in the poetry that is lyricism

  72. S.... R....

This song has only one big mistake - it´s all too short !!!

  73. f.... f....

    brilliant song so much emotion

  74. R.... ....

    @Jackson. He did

  75. P.... j....

Peter paul and Mary do a good version of this too

  76. H.... L....

I gave her my heart, but she wanted by soul. Amazing cover.

  77. R.... J....

    Another great song by Johnny.

  78. B.... ....

I remember the first time I heard this one... I was simply stunned by his voice. I replayed it again, and again. and again... Bob deserves the credit for writing this awesome song, but Johnny simply NAILED it...

  79. R.... ....

ay rhino, aint Johnny the best?

  80. s.... ....

Will check it out now - thanks, stellas7591 : )

  81. S.... S....

have you heard the version by Tamco though, it's AMAZING it's a woman's perspective, it IS INCREDIBLE and a bit trippy too..

  88. J.... R....

    flippin eck, my roosters crowing.x

  89. C.... H....

i named my son after dylan too!

  90. S.... B....

Johnny's version is more upbeat, but Bob's had so much more power and soul. I have listed to it 1000 times, and I'm not sick of it.

  91. B.... S....

Bob's version is a million times better, I don't know what your on about you tool

  92. i.... ....

@farmerfran53 Bob Dylan's VERSION? He wrote the song. This is a version, and both are good in my humble opinion.

  93. A.... A....

bob dylan's version doesnt deserve to exist...

  94. P.... ....

wish you could find bob dylan's version on youtube...this'll have to do haha

  95. R.... M....

It must be awesome to cover a good friend's song. I wish my best friend had any kind of musical talent at all...
