When I was deployed to Ramadi 2003-04 I bought this album at the P.x. on FOB junction city. When i would come home from missions and sleep in my cot, missing my family, doubting my choice to join the infantry, doubt in my heart about that god forsaken war, this album, this song especially, helped me sooooooo much. In my headphones i was in a private heaven. Thank you Simon, Garfunkel, and Johnny!! Peace to the Earth brothers and sisters, let us be a bridge for one another over the troubled waters on this age!!

I love Johnny Cash but I have to strongly disagree with comments about this song. He can't hit the high notes, not even close to Garfunkel and Elvis. Sounds like a average karaoke performance.

14 years old , I learnt to know the song composed by Paul Simon. l' ve loved that melody, but did'nt understand the lyrics complete (because lack of fully unterstanding the English language). And even I did not appreciate the "timbre"/tenor of Art Garfunkel (that's just a matter of taste). For me in those times this title was a pathethic "Girl's song". Johnny Cash was'nt even my favourite in those days and later on. His last Album taught me something else. Growing older - and appreciating other artists beyond the limited circle of my musical heroes in former times (they still have some meaning for myself) - I have to confess that Cash's interpetation is so stunning & touching, so that I have to commit now: what a wonderful song, what an soulful artist this man in black has ever been !!! 🖤

I’ve read many of the comments about this version of “Bridge Over Troubled Water” that have been posted earlier than this one by me. Many make solid arguments for the original by Simon and Garfunkel, while others make arguments just as solid for this cover by Johnny Cash. I believe ultimately that the two versions of this song are not better than one another. It is all a matter of personal preference that depends on where you are in your life when you listen to each one.

I always loved the Simon and Garfunkel version, and I am old enough to remember hearing it when it was first released. However, where I am in my life right now, in my early 60s and reminiscing about some triumphs but also many disappointments and regrets, the Johnny Cash version really speaks to ME. Enjoy your choice, whichever version you prefer, and whenever you prefer it.

I get chills every time I listen to this song. The emotions in Johnny and Junes voices are raw and powerful.

Just watched Paul Simon as Musical Guest on SNL...and I thought.. That would have made a great collab.... Cash and Simon singing Bridge Over Troubled Water.

It really is the different inflections here that make the tones of this version and the Simon and Garfunkel version nigh incomparable. Cash’s is full imperfection and glottal attacks. But that adds humanity to the sound. It grounds it and almost makes it feel more exposed. While I may prefer the ethereal and subdued performance of Art Garfunkel, Johnny does a great job here.

I think it was the wrong choice to make this a duet. Johnny's voice is so powerful on its' own that it puts an emphasis on the comforting lyrics. He doesn't need anyone to join in. It only gets weaker.

I remember my first time hearing the song her voice just came out of nowhere but it was definitely very welcomed. Again, the softness she added to it. Wow, I absolutely love the raw talent of this legend, you can feel his soul in this version. I feel this song had meaning to him way beyond what we could ever know.

This is one of my favorite songs. The first time I heard it I was ten and heard Garfunkel sing it live in concert. That was 1970. That was also two days after we buried my father. I went with my mother in his place. On more than one occasion my mother put the cap back on a bottle of pills she intended to swallow after hearing this song play. I just wanted to give a little context for what this song means to me. Every time I hear this song sung I compare it to that first time I heard it.

I loved Johnny Cash. I was a huge fan. I miss his talent. He was a giant. His performances are legendary. While this is a beautiful performance on his part, I cannot like it as much as Garfunkel's. Also, I'd have loved to hear Cash sing this when he was in his prime. Fiona's contribution was for me too distracting. It didn't really add anything to this recording. That said, it might be nice to hear her rendition of it as a solo performance as she obviously has a beautiful singing voice.

A Hundred Highways and Ain't No Grave are albums that comprise those recordings of his final months. And there's still some that's yet to be released.
