Cash, Johnny - A Thing Called Love Lyrics
Six foot six he stood on the ground
He weighed two hundred and thirty-five pounds
But I saw that giant of a man brought down
To his knees by love
Look you in the eye and never back up
But I saw him crying like a little whipped pup
Because of love
You can't see it with your eyes, hold it in your hands
But like the wind it covers our land
Strong enough to rule the heart of any man
This thing called love
It can lift you up never let you down
Take your world and turn it around
That's stronger than love
Most men are like me, they struggle and doubt
They trouble their minds day in and day out
Too busy with livin' to worry about
A little word like love
But when I see a mother's tenderness
As she holds her young close to her breast
Then I thank god that the world's been blessed
With a thing called love
You can't see it with your eyes, hold it in your hands
But like the wind it covers our land
Strong enough to rule the heart of any man
This thing called love
It can lift you up never let you down
Take your world and turn it around
Ever since time nothing's ever been found
That's stronger than love
Ever since time nothing's ever been found
That's stronger than love

Cash, Johnny A Thing Called Love Comments
Just heard this song on a country playlist at work. It’s awesome, Cash is the best : )
Perfect version.
Love Jerry's version best but this one had a more hoppy sound to it, it's almost a different song entirely, like this version alot too but the other artists dont hold a candle to this or Jerry's original

Loved this since I was a kid
A timeless classic.
The song is for Elvis Presley
Mitico johnny...
Jerry Reed Hubbard did not write the song. I did.
I wrote it back in 1969 at a Texas town called
Whitesboro. It was the one and only song I wrote.
I was 19 then, I'm 70 now and wished to this day
I had done all I could to have had it copyrighted.
I was unemployed, had no money, lived with my
parents and enjoyed playing guitar and making up
songs. One day I read about sending songs to RCA
victor recording company in California. Like an idiot
I sent the music sheet there and got an answer about
three weeks later thanking me for my contribution to
the music industry. And that's the last I heard from them.
Sometime later I heard my song, A Thing Called Love!!!, on
the radio. I called my mother and sister into the kitchen
and we three were dumbfounded! Well, they did say
they were looking for songwriting material only. They were
not obligated to give me the credit, or even name me as the
writer. Now every time I hear my song, I do get the satisfaction
that Cash, Jerry Reed, Ed Ames, (the first to sing it) and even
Elvis sang it. Commenting once that he liked the way love was
explained so beautifully. I guess I did contribute one song to
the world of music, me LORENZO LLAMAS, ( not the actor),
got a song out there for you to like. Glad to have done it.
Enjoy!
The Royle Family when Jim and Nana finally bond before she passes on
Such a great but sometimes boring show lol

Johnny Cash sang from his heart. Like all great country singers do. RIP
Back when musicians had talent
Jerry Reed wrote this and his version is much better

Same but I’ve felt like this since I was younger though I’m 16, some of my friends don’t get why I’ve been listening to the same songs through middle school into hs
It's 2018 and this keep amazing 🦄
All I can say is that in my experience the only one who will truly love us unconditionally is the Lord. I have myself failed to be loving to many, and I've been betrayed by many. I have even hated myself. The only one who loved me through thick and thin was God. If God would stop being seen as so "quaint", maybe our world would start to make sense again.
possibly the best song ever written!!
Thank jerry reed
Great version by Johnny Cash, but it is Jerry Reed's song.
pg1171 yes indeed
JERRY PLAYED BACKGROUND GUITAR ON THIS SONG FOR JIMMY DEAN IN 1958
Thank you for that info. I always thought it was Johnny Cash original.
Can't believe there are 25 people who don't like this!!!
Those people must be musically dead hip-hop lovers.
I LUV the production job on the back-up vocals...!!
A well written song with a hell of a true meaning..X

Were you brought down by a thing called love?
thank you Natwest
They may be coming from a Natwest advert, but they came none the less. If it hadn't have been for that, they'd probably have never heard it before. I grew up with my parents listening to this, so anyone today that finds it good music is welcome here, advert or not.
the best.
Any thing that brings new ears to Johnny Cash has gotta be good surely?
I like this song very much, and Johnny's voice suits it fine !
sad that the majority of likes are coming from a natwest advert.... but hey ho....
who said anything about up? it's burning hot down here
He's a keyboard warrior. He couldn't slice cheese.
How's the weather up there my friend? :D
Well, then that's a good thing! =]
Actually it brought me here. I love J Cash and I hadn't heard this one.
The banking advert brought me here!111
Not really.
lucky them
i believe johnny describes me in the first 40 seconds of the song
And it doesn't surprise me that we all want him to.
Don't you want to ride into the sunset...listening to Johnny Cash...
Really don't like watching that episode, makes me cry every single time I watch it :(
This song is great,it reminds me of my schooldays, when the most fashionable shoes were called "Tugs",I remember a kid put new words to it,he went round singing something like "You can't wear them on your head, you wear them on your feet, you look cool walking down the street, you know they just can't ever be beat....a pair of Tugs"
No to be fair I think 7 people accidentally hit the wrong button. The problem is that once you have voted llike or dislike then you can't change it if you made a mistake.
The Royle family got me hooked on this song. Being just 18 I didn't grow up with such music <33
I was listening to this song on my MP-3 player when I walked down the Grand Canyon...
This is my favourite Cash song too, my 5 yr old daughter knows every word, We love JR
My most fave song by Mr Cash
That's how I first found this song. Glad I watched that now,
I loved that part of the episode. It showed Jim liked his mother in-law really despite his usual comments to the contrary. great song too.
Over 40 years old this song. Heard a bit of it for the first time lately and had to YouTube it. I'm 22 and, pardon the pun, bloody *love* this song. The harmonies and melody as well as the lyrics are all brilliant. Something you can rarely genuinely say for modern music.
