Case, Neko - Hell-On Lyrics

God is not a contract or a guy
God is an unspecified tide
You cannot time its tables
It sets no glass or gables
God is a lusty tire fire
Its bristles scrape and strike the stage
A rock, paper, scissors' rage
Have mercy on the natural world

My voice is not the liquid waves
The perfect rings around a heron's legs
My voice is straight garroting wire
A stolen mile of fingerprints
Peeled the quiet from the dunes
Captured and re-spooled as ruin to be used
At a different time

My voice is a fracture
For shinbone's lust
Pounding barefoot ground
It lifts you up and sits you just
Just at sorrow's waterline
I drape you on tomorrow's plate
Fair as metal, marrow spilling
Not yours but mine
I'm an agent of the natural world

Don't you tell me I didn't warn you
That that's some gravity you ought not to play with
Don't you tell me I didn't warn you
That that's some gravity you ought not to play with

Nothing quite so poison as a promise
Nothing quite so poison as a promise
Nothing quite so poison as a promise
Nothing quite so poison as a promise

And me, I am not a mess
I am a wilderness, yes
The undiscovered continent for you to undress
But you'll not be my master
You're barely my guest
You don't have permission to take any pictures
Be careful of the natural world

Nature can't amend its ways
Boils along and then replays
Despite heartfelt springtimes of regret
The storms she still cries for days
Have mercy on the natural world

hell yeah another killer album by neko

  2. J.... B....

    🌹 beautiful

  3. R.... R....

what in gods name is this album cover

  4. B.... H....

Excellent, but the people here who comment on her 'evolution' make me shake my head. This is Neko as she's always been. The difference is the mix. There's less of the characteristic reverb. Lyrically, she's the same', in that she's a wonderful poet. Her musicality is singularly hers, as is her impeccably well-controlled and inviting voice.

I'm glad that she's not a carbon-copy female singer -- another Frankensteinian Norah/Adele/Winehouse, et. al. permutation of the breathy, whiny, slurred, mopey industry darling that's a guaranteed sell to the tragically hip, gullible trough-feeders.

To me, there's no 'evolution' here -- just a continuance a little further down a surprisingly scenic road in a vehicle that doesn't need improvement or a trade-up.

For me, this song is about wild power and mystery. A woman, like nature, like fire, like God, is chaotic. No guarantees. Meant to be respected, not used. And like nature, she has a breaking point. Tread carefully on this hallowed ground, for if you trifle with this power, you will get burned.

I'm in awe. It's like she has her finger directly on my pulse. The wire at my throat. I'm at your mercy, Neko.

Scorned as timber, beloved of the sky.

  6. R.... D....

She is a doll. Love that sound.

  7. B.... N....

You're going to have to get over that. That fear of Lilith is holding you back and its that fear that'll be your undoing if you're not careful. You need to make amends, forgive her and move forward because that toxic shit is killing you and keeping you ignorant. I realize now that my experiences have surpassed yours and in some ways its your turn to learn from me. Or don't, shit I don't care if you don't.

  8. T.... ....

In parts, I swear she's channelling Kirsty Maccoll, only with even sharper lyrics.

  9. c.... p....

what thoughtful titles … l'm ordering now

  10. S.... O....

    Beautiful.

  11. S.... Y....

    Absolutely beautiful song!!

  12. F.... ....

Interesting that she says that "there is some gravity you should not play with", while she's writing anti_christ lyrics that spit in the face of the One who created not only gravity, but the cost that can be of such "gravity" when a person decides that there isn't anything that can't be willfully disrespected, openly. I assure you that this wont end well.....
Remember what i said....Just give it time.....as all fuses have to reach the powder before the damage is revealed.

    F.... ....

Fastguitars why is god such a thin skinned baby

  13. B.... ....

1:51 was this from something else, sounds familiar?

  14. J.... ....

This and Bad Luck, references to fire (visual and lyrics) the songs and the videos. Her Vermont farmhouse burned down. It's all coming together...for me at least.

  15. J.... M....

So worthy of my utter adoration.

  16. T.... ....

Just throw a bunch of words together and you’ll get a Neko Case song.
Type “My life” and what ever middle word comes up next, will be your Neko Case song.
My life was just like a mommy loves me and she was just so good I gotta see you in the middle of a night with you I love y’all and I’ll let ya go

    T.... ....

well..at least you can enjoy the melody. (or not).

    T.... ....

It's not the words, but the way you throw them

    T.... ....

I disagree about Your theory But Your partially describing
~Wikip " "The cut-up technique" (or découpé in French) is an aleatory literary technique in which a written text is cut up and rearranged to create a new text. The concept can be traced to at least the Dadaists of the 1920s, but was popularized in the late 1950s and early 1960s by writer William S. Burroughs, and has since been used in a wide variety of contexts."

    T.... ....

  25. a.... ....

I love her voice so...this is not! Please sing like a Virginian girl like again.

  26. A.... S....

The purpose of poetry is to bait the God of commentary

The purpose of music is to transcend Him

    A.... S....

No disrespect meant, "Him" & or "Her" & or "Other" ...

  27. A.... ....

Beautiful! I'm a huge fan of her work, I already learned this on my guitar by now. The album cover is a bit weird, but that's normal for her

    A.... ....

So it was never weird before?

  40. D.... l....

    Preciosa.

  41. j.... ....

love her, seen her 8 times, but her best days could be behind her, I am sorry to say

    j.... ....

I got an email from her label about this album where she wrote about struggles with vocals.

    j.... ....

I saw her in Cincinnati on her last tour and she was so verbally abusive to the audience I just stopped listening to her and never want to see her live again. She has become a total diva. Such a bummer. She was always a favorite of mine.

    j.... ....

J Apanites abusive in what way? Because she wanted ppl to shut up and listen and not be taking photos and dicking around on their phones?

    j.... ....

I saw her twice in Philadelphia around 2001, one time solo, one time with The New Pornographers. I distinctly remember her getting into it with someone on both occasions. Even back then she wasn't afraid to call out people that were abusive or disruptive. She's no diva.

    j.... ....

"she was so verbally abusive to the audience I just stopped listening to her and never want to see her live again"

    ^ This.
I was a huge fan of hers. I saw her 5 times in a year... but she was such a bitch to her fans at the last show I saw (Cyclone Tour).... I actually walked out. 40 years of concerts, the only time Ive EVER walked out of a show.
Fucking rude, walked by people saying hello to her, etc (waiting in line to see her). The night before, she was actually booed at the the end of the show. She had a temper tantrum with some technical problems and basically threw in the towel and got off stage as fast as she could.
No respect for her anymore.. Havent for years.

Cyclone was ok, The Worse Things Get... was intolerable.
Shes become tedious and boring anyway.. no loss.

  42. W.... O....

Wow so amazing!!!! I LOVE this woman💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

  43. P.... C....

This is what I was hoping her sound would evolve into. She’s like a Gaia of the Gas Station

  44. g.... ....

5 years with no solo LP was long but it was clear that her sound was developing into something all of her own, and it was totally worth the wait. This goes so many places, and her voice, this tornado shaped into a laser ray, just keeps growing (if that is even possible for one such as hers)

    g.... ....

    guillaumehiggins well stated👊🏿

    g.... ....

I'm intimidated by her. Lol. This album is amazing

  45. A.... T....

What I really like about it is that it's good.

    A.... T....

    it's more than good!

  46. J.... M....

    Wooo, strange vibes. digging it!

  47. J.... S....

One more reason to be head over heels.

  48. B.... ....

Amazing, as always. The instrumentals sound almost Tom Waits like on this one

    B.... ....

Just the intro, and more than Almost, but it quickly veers into territories that increasingly sound like no one but Neko Case.

  49. J.... B....

    Another amazing song from Neko!

  50. L.... C....

    God damn. Amazing.

  51. K.... O....

Oh my... this sounds like Neko wrote an off broadway musical which is now something I want.

  52. j.... s....

    this girl's on fire!

  53. B.... D....

    oooh ohh oh my god

  54. L.... K....

    The Queen Returns...

  55. K.... V....

She never disappoints. This was well worth the wait <3

  56. J.... M....

Goes so many places. All of them gorgeous.

  57. K.... M....

    Love this!
