Carter Family, The - Wildwood Flower Lyrics

Oh, I'll twine with my mangels and waving black hair
With the roses so red and the lilies so fair
And the myrtle so bright with the emerald dew
The pale amanita and islip like blue

I will dance, I will sing, and my laugh shall be gay
I will charm every heart, in his crown I will sway
When I woke from my dreaming my idol was clay
All portion of love had all flown away

Oh, he taught me to love him and promised to love
And to cherish me over all others above
How my heart is now wondering no misery can tell
He's left me no warning, no words of farewell

Oh, he taught me to love him and called me his flower
That's blooming to cheer him through life's dreary hour
Oh, I long to see him and regret the dark hour
He's won and neglected this pale wildwood flower

And to cherish me over all others above
My poor heart is wondering no misery can tell
He left with no warning, no word of farewell
Well you told me you love me and called me your flower
That was blooming to cheer you through life's dreary hour
I live to see him regret life's dark hour

Mother Maybelle 's style of playing guitar & autoharp was so special that no one has ever been able to play like it. Many have tried but there is always something lacking. Plus her sweet smile & quiet personality just tugged at the heart. Always wondered how she was able to ride her on 3 lively girls. She was remarkable.

  17. A.... S....

It's interesting that while Maybelle's singing was widely considered inferior to Sara's (when they were still performing as the original Carter Family), she was still a pretty darn good lead singer. Mature voice, pitch spot on. Anita had the loveliest voice of all the sisters, but Helen was also a great musician. A true multi instrumentalist, and the only one in the family who was able to read music. She did a lot of arranging, too. June got a bit of a raw deal, she was often considered the "ugly duckling" who didn't play stringed instruments as well as her mother or sang as well as her sisters. But she was still a better musician that most of the population.

  19. R.... N....

A P Carter stole lots of songs from unknowing people.

    R.... N....

Or you could say he saved these songs from obscurity. Perspective I guess.

    R.... N....

    How do you know?

  20. M.... F....

    What year would this be?

    M.... F....

Definitely the early to mid sixties

  28. L.... W....

There are some very good versions of this song, but somehow it just doesn't sound right without the accent. Thanks for the upload!

  38. p.... ....

As a concert pianist who never knew much about Country Music, I have grown a great appreciation for it because of watching the Ken Burns series. I always liked instrumental Bluegrass but was unaware of the rest of it. Thank you, Ken Burns, and thanks to all those country artists who have been and those who are still with us.

  42. J.... T....

Great job on this wonderful old song!

  43. E.... L....

Mother Maybelle, the first guitar hero.

  44. B.... R....

Mother Maybelle is so talented, as well as her family. Something about her looks very hardened, probably from a very difficult upbringing. That is one chick not to fuck with.

  45. C.... 3....

This makes me think if my father, he didn't sing but I remember him playing this tune on his guitar when I was growing up ❤

    C.... 3....

Same story here, it was the only song he could play.

    C.... 3....

@Doc Riordan I don't know why but that makes me happy to have such a random thing in common with someone else on this planet 😊

    C.... 3....

@Cyclops 3000 agreed it is different in this day and age. I was going to write the same comment until I saw yours so just added to it.

  46. s.... f....

THE SEEDS OF POPULAR MUSIC WERE SEWN,,WOW

  47. I.... S....

Great tribute to the Carter family on the Country Music documentary on PBS. Be sure to watch all 8 episodes .

    B.... J....

It was sooo wonderful...left me in tears...

    B.... J....

A great series - Ken Burn's documentaries have faithfully captured so much about American culture and history.

    B.... J....

Been desperate to watch it. Ut I'm in the UK and don't get pbs..... Gonna have to wait....

  57. B.... A....

Also watching Ken Burns doc, and was enlightened to hear about Maybelle's pioneering guitar work, i.e. "the Carter Scratch" or "thumb-lead style." This technique involved playing a melody on the instrument's three bass strings while simultaneously strumming the three treble strings for rhythm. She used thumb and finger picks while playing." (wiki excerpt)

  58. K.... H....

    Great song 🙂

  59. D.... S....

Mother Maybelle's picking blows my mind!

    D.... S....

She's not just picking but playing the rhythm at the same time

  61. T.... J....

I'm an 80s metal head not hair bands but real metal and I love to play this song both on my guitar and on my radio

    T.... J....

In the 80s everybody hated Metallica in the Midwest. Ezo, Judas priest, iron maiden, Megadeth, anthrax , Masi , Krokus, Scorpions. It wasn't until 1989 with "One". 80s were done by then

  80. D.... M....

Well its a well known country song sung by the old family's conuntry group.

  81. V.... J....

Can anyone name these ladies singing by their first names ?

  82. c.... ....

Having lived many years and become successful in most of my endeavors, I often come here to listen to this humble music as it always reminds me of my roots and keeps me close to them.. never straying too far from where I came from...

  83. W.... B....

Ads are annoying and i boycott what y'all shove down my throat

  84. T.... K....

For anybody who doesn't know, the lead vocalist there was "Mother" Maybelle Carter; she became Johnny Cash's mother-in-law when he married her daughter June (seated bottom left)

  85. H.... M....

What year was this song made?

  86. D.... D....

The ORIGINAL Carter Family consisted pf A. P. Carter, Sarah, his wife, and his Sister in Law, Maybelle. Any version without A. P. (Alvin Pleasance) and an addition of other family members is and was decidedly inferior and not a fair representation of what the Carter Family was all about! I'm sorry I wasted my time with this turkey!

  87. S.... p....

Is that June Carter oh mine

  88. M.... M....

This brings nostalgia to when I played Slender The Arrival

  89. S.... H....

I found this song by accident after 40 years of trying because my daddy Played it on the harmonica when I was a little girl. I was so happy to find it! Music speaks to the heart. Thank you for sharing.

  90. E.... R....

  91. T.... U....

I don't like Country but this one is mesmerising

  92. L.... S....

so this is the music kate the chaser listens to ???? *no regrets*

  93. F.... B....

Probably one of the hardest songs to play on guitar...Ever!

  94. C.... D....

I must admit, I hate country music, but this, this makes me feel a strange way, like it has some mysterious warm aura to it that pulls me in.

  95. m.... v....

    wonderful !!!!!!

  96. a.... m....

    u right bro

  97. E.... R....

    what year is this?

    E.... R....

This is from the early 60s. I'm not sure the exact year, but I'd say anywhere from 1960-1963
