Carter Family, The - Where We'll Never Grow Old Lyrics

I have heard of a land, on the faraway strand
'Tis a beautiful home of the soul
Built for Jesus on high, there we never shall die
'Tis a land where we'll never grow old

Never grow old, (where we'll) never grow old
In the land where we'll never grow old
Never grow old, (where we'll) never grow old
In the land where we'll never grow old

In that beautiful home, where we'll nevermore roam
We shall be in the sweet by and by
Happy praise to the king, through eternity sing
Is a land where we never shall die

Never grow old, (where we'll) never grow old
In the land where we'll never grow old
Never grow old, (where we'll) never grow old
In the land where we'll never grow old

When our work here is done, and the life's crown is won
And our troubles and trials are o'er
All our sorrow will end, and our voices will blend
With the loved ones who've gone on before

Never grow old, (where we'll) never grow old
In the land where we'll never grow old
Never grow old, (where we'll) never grow old
In the land where we'll never grow old

Carter Family, The Where We'll Never Grow Old Comments
  1. A.... W....

Carter family's music always warms my heart!

  2. J.... P....

All these years later, after a lifetime of listening to all kinds of music, this music is even more beautiful and powerful to me than ever before. I am truly amazed at how great the Carters were. I am also fully aware that 90% of what we call "The Carters" is in actual fact two young women named Sara and Maybelle.

  3. b.... r....

    just love this song

  4. D.... M....

A shame some of us have to grow old before we mellow out and appreciate the simple things.

  5. E.... S....

Never ceases to strike me how forgotten A.P. Carter is at times. It is clear that Sarah and Maybelle were the singing drivers but when A.P. Carters comes in he gives a really fantastic foundation to those top voices especially that strong alto that Sarah had. The 3 sounding together was magic.

    E.... S....

Actually, in there first few recording sessions, A.P. contributed more than Maybelle vocally.

  6. J.... R....

That's why they are called "The Original". That's what class is!

    So peaceful.

  9. B.... P....

Too late, I am already old, very old. But looking for that land

  10. J.... P....

    Praise god

  11. w.... p....

    "Amen"♫

  12. A.... ....

I realize as a young man that my number one goal in life is to become a whole person capable of living a life pleasing to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Through trials and troubles, hurt's heartaches and hangups, no matter the amount of sorrow or affliction this life on earth throws at me I will remain a soldier of the Cross until the end of my life. Praise and Glory be to God on high forever and ever. Amen.

    A.... ....

    Austin I second that, amen

    A.... ....

He's the only thing that keeps me out of killing myself every single day ! I love Jesus so very much also .

  13. J.... W....

    I'm listening again and again.
I'm 36 yrs and from Ireland, it's Celtic music , The Carter Family are a timeless genius, we won't ever see again.

  14. G.... v....

And John Lennon said "before Elvis there was nothing"

  15. r.... f....

Sounds like 2 guitars...no autoharp as noted on the stamper.

  16. M.... C....

    FOARTE FRUMOS ♥

  17. D.... J....

Saviour, give me strength and hold me firm till the end in a world ravished with sin.

  18. R.... F....

This song my father performed at a funeral for the baby daughter of one of my aunts in 1978. I have a recording of the funeral, it's very emotional.

  19. F.... S....

Oh John, cull the herd, feel the bliss, and follow the Father out of the snow and through Eden's gate to the bountiful garden.

  20. D.... L....

Carter family music never grows old!

  21. a.... m....

    very nice!!!!!!!

  22. D.... K....

YOUR MUSIC IS THE GREATEST IN THE WORLD

  23. C.... O....

this is great music thank goodness for you tube

  24. c.... ....

This song. When you read the lyrics. It's absolutely beautifull and unbelievably sad. Truley fantastic.

  25. j.... b....

Yes we will, we have  it now but none listen. There are too many distractions. One day all this will dry up and we'll return to simpler times. Then music will have verses and thoughtful content.

  26. D.... B....

    beautiful

  27. D.... Z....

We will never again have such talent in the music industry...........

    D.... Z....

that's the sad truth. Back then it was the beauty and meaning of the music. Now it's all how you look and dress. The music has no flavor to it.

    D.... Z....

They are all around you. Talented musicians.

    D.... Z....

The modern stuff is "Cookie-Cutter Country"... I was calling it that 20 years before George Jones did. : ) And like he says, none of it will be remembered.

    D.... Z....

    Amen Terrace

  28. j.... c....

times were so simple back then . people were so content with what they had .

    j.... c....

Which is why they invented all these modern conveniences? Anyway, this song is about heaven. There are very many old songs that sing cheerfully about death because the pain and hardship of life will be over, or about a fantasy land where everything's wonderful. It doesn't speak to contentment. And that's not even mentioning the blues.

    j.... c....

Times were NOT "simple back then." The 1929 stock market crash left many Americans destitute. The 20s and 30s saw many murders/lynching of African-Americans by white Americans/the KKK. The 1930s Depression was the worst time in the 20th C for the US economically and socially -- bread lines, people begging for food, massive unemployment, rural poor on the move. Not to mention, women fighting for their equal rights, discrimination agains Blacks, Jews, women & immigrants in education, housing, , and jobs.  Unions fighting for fair working conditions. No anti - child labor laws until 1938!! -- kids working in the dangerous factories. I hardly think they were "content with what they had." Then followed by US entry into WWII. Don't forget the flu epidemics, women dying in childbirth, and rise of the mob during and after Prohibition.  The 20s might have been good for the wealthy robber barrons, but very hard for working folks and everyone else.

    j.... c....

Yeah shit was complex, they made simple music to cope

  29. R.... J....

i lose my cusing lase night jasing smiilly

  30. G.... D....

  31. H.... D....

    When was this song recorded?

    H.... D....

    Between 1927-1934

  32. i.... a....

This is the kind of music my grandmother listen to on AM radio when she got ready for church Sunday mornings. If I was her weekend visitor I had to go to church with her. The minister slowly worked himself into an ecstasy and there were Amens and Halleluiahs aplenty coming from the congregation, my old granny testifying with her share. When my family moved to Arkansas we lived so far back in the hills the was no radio to be heard, never mind television. The only radio I heard were the night time clear channels, Nashville, Chicago (89 WLS!) and New Orleans. Of the three only New Orleans kept power boosted long enough to be received in the morning. If I wanted to wake to music rather than an alarm, it was New Orleans or nothing. Mull's Gospel music played every morning. While gospel is hardly my favorite type of music, I awoke many mornings to that twangy nasally sound of old time religion. I can't hear it to this day without memories of hot Arkansas summer mornings and the chores that needed doing before the heat of the day. In the wisdom of my old age I've realized that such simple values hurt no one and would do so-called modern people a lot of good. I say "so-called" because modern folks seem more primitive than any of the old folks I remember from my childhood. Modern is only newer, not better.

    i.... a....

    lOUD AND CLEAR OVER HERE.

    i.... a....

Those times must have been something, could just imagine the tubes on the old am radio glowing...so simple and true

The Carters do it 110% better than the closest runner up  I guess that applies to 99.9% of their songs .

what a lovely fairytale   so nice they made a song about  heaven indeed!!my favourite fairytale song is   puff the magic dragon   they both have as much credalbility

    b.... ....

Hey now, I'm not religious either but it's a beautiful song, no need to be a prick about it.

    b.... ....

ur right sorry that was 10 months ago and who knows what kind of mood i was in at the time i happen to love gospel music although an atheist its the reason i clicked this in the first place

Enjoy this life we've been given.

    b.... ....

Thats no fairytale, not the Christian God, thats the REAL god, its all those OTHER gods from the thousand of other religions that have existed throughout time that are fairytales, sheesh

  37. N.... ....

This is the music they used on the TV show "Hell on Wheels" When they hung Ruth. Very touching.

  38. G.... W....

    Salute!

  39. G.... W....

Dear God, it's me again. We are sure in a mess down here. We need the Prince of Peace to blanket this country with Your Love. Keep the wheels on this old car as we rattle along, I am very weak but You are strong. I draw from Your love. Someone tonight is hurting real bad. They have had a crushing blow that is trying their ties to you Lord. Take them in Your arms and whisper the peace that passeth understanding. Hold them Lord until the wretchedness ebbs and they can put one foot in front of the other. Give them strength to face another day. Take away thoughts of suicide and reassure this person that You are in charge and You love each and every one of us. Amen

    G.... W....

THAT IS WHY I AM HERE.... NO MORE HURTING ... OR ONE ANOTHER... LOTS OF HEALING IS COMING... 🤗

    G.... W....

Was gonna say the same thing as Terry. I'm not religious but your kind words resonate somehow. Hope you're well Glyn, although I don't know you at all. :) There's this pulse of the heart that goes beyond religion that we all feel somehow, right? Listening to this song in a neonlit office on a gloomy day and fighting back tears to the best of my ability, just because this song is so beautiful and simple it's piercing right through one's heart like the most miraculous golden arrow.

    G.... W....

Marie-Herveline Caron .... yes m8. I dontknow you but i hope your travels are happy 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿😎👍

    G.... W....

@elleanarchy We are never told in the Bible to "help ourselves". Jesus said "Come unto me, ye who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." Don't you ever tell someone not to come to Jesus for help.

  40. W.... W....

Miss the old days . (sigh)

  41. T.... J....

    Reminds me of my dad:(

  42. j.... m....

  46. A.... K....

    I love it!

  47. B.... 2....

I can agree with Hugh Williams that not a lot of young people like I know the Carter Family like they should. But there are some out there like me. We need to make sure this music never dies

    B.... 2....

Well aren't you just fuckin' special.

  48. T.... ....

Hello all, I am a Music student at the University of Southampton (UK) conducting a paper on authentic country music, and what makes country music “real”. If you class yourself as a country music fan, it would be great if you could reply to this saying what you think makes country music authentic and why. It would help my research a lot, thanks!

    T.... ....

For me, it's primarily the simplicity of the music with its lack of pretentiousness. The original country music wasn't "written" with any idea of collecting royalties. The phenomenon of this music having been developed and evolving from singing and playing it repeatedly gives it an unalloyed authenticity.

    T.... ....

Hi Tom Maybe that's what people is being taught, but for the old timers that was there when this music was being written I think they would have a different story, Like Jenett Carter said ,her mother and father and Maybelle and her family wanted a better life instead of the farm life they were use to, So by A,P, going out and finding these songs  and granted he did write some of them ,he was thinking of a better life for his family so I say he was thinking Royalties, just like the others, If you ever get into the Bluegrass part of this music I know one of Bill Monroe Bluegrass boy that can give you a lesson on it, and also knew Mama Maybelle

    T.... ....

@Tom Blundell As a musician, and being from "the country" I'd have to say it's just folk music,by folks about folks (with a southern accent). Often when you try and explain such illusive pieces of our humanity as art/music it unravels logic and is answerable only by that which provokes the query initially. The part which is unanswerable, that mystique, is exactly what makes it so phenomenal. It is beyond explanation, gracefully ascending into the divine realm of expression of the soul.So go folk yourself :)

    T.... ....

    @gloria boyd
Yes right on, Gloria. And anyone who ever met June Carter knows it was the money that talked her language A.P. Carter lived his life to collect those songs and provide for his children during very hard times with those copyrights, He lived a poor life and Sara left him but he kept on putting aside for his family. Sara regretted leaving him; he had never been home as he was searching for the music. Their reunion was bittersweet for Sara as she realized what she threw away was the life she loved. What makes any art interesting is the window of life that it opens to our eyes. The Carter family were Woody Guthrie's, Elvis Presley's, Johnny Cash's (and so many others) main inspiration for the next generations thanks to the power of radio.

    T.... ....

+Tom Blundell An old (and oft-repeated) definition of country music is "Three chords and the truth." As an example, the lyric line "The silence of a falling star lights up a purple sky" immediately paints an indelible picture for anyone listening. This is not to say that country music can't sometimes be musically complicated and lyrically obtuse, but the quintessential country song speaks volumes to the human heart, usually in about 3 minutes, and this is why many skilled songwriters make Nashville their home. Country music is, imho, more focused on the importance of the song, and not quite as much on the personalities. Interestingly, country and bluegrass music are (apart from gospel/religious music) about the only forms of music that frequently include songs about matters of faith. Anyway, good luck.

  49. U.... S....

    srill some hope-----------

  50. H.... W....

It really is a shame that the Carter family isn't better known today by more people, but like so many of the great singers and musicians who passed away many years ago, most of their contemporaries (and many of their children) have also died. Most young people today have no interest in looking back and listening to some of the best music ever produced in America--another real shame.

I have to stop blubberin like a wet cat! My ma said dont over do things in worryin for her but the fear is real and it hurts deep! I cry every fucking day and night! I love this music. To me there is such a good "connection" between the artist and the listener not seen in some more modern music. Thanks for posting.

  53. s.... ....

This is a great recording. It really shows how good The Carter Family was.

  54. g.... f....

this music gone only on you tube

The Carter Family is a simple box in plain brown wrapping paper that is full of endless little gifts of "lessons in life" that never stop. You'll get a new gift with every listen.

Most commercial music of any genre is in a gorgeous box that is totally empty when opened.

  56. B.... C....

When gospel songs were played alongside secular records and were just as popular. When songs said something meaningful. This is true soul music...simple, sincere and heart touching. Look at what we've become as a country since these simple days when God was the main focus. Thanks for sharing. I always enjoy the Carters ~ Bob Coltrain Kennedy

  59. T.... F....

The greatness of the carter family was that their music was so pure. Pure thoughts in the lyrics. No fuzz boxes and other artificial stuff as in what we call music today. Music just as pure as a mountain stream. Just home grown talent mostly self taught.

  60. r.... ....

I don't know much about the Carter Family, so I'll be investigating because I like this kind of music a lot. Thanks for posting and greetings from Italy.

    great music and singing

  71. C.... T....

i learned this song from cash's "my mother's hymns", and it became a favorite. i always "heard" harmony vocals over the bare rubin/cash arrangement (indeed, over that whole album), and now i literally hear them, rendered beautifully :)

  75. c.... ....

Many great versions of this wonderful song have been recorded over time .. and, APART from this original .. the version that I love best is by George Pegram, the champion mountain banjo picker, from his 1970 Rounder 0001 self-titled album. These days, that album is a genuine collector's item, I reckon .. and I'm priveleged to say that my vinyl copy is still in mint-condition ...

  76. L.... M....

It's a real joy to discover these old beautiful songs; thank you so much to share; it' marvelous

Thank you! I'm glad you like it. The Stanley Brothers were quite talented as well. Thank you for stopping by, and be sure to check out the other videos on my channel. I have posted over 850 old time recordings from the 20's and 30's. Have a great night, Brian

  88. d.... ....

another great version is Carter and Ralph Stanley's ...I have it on cassette in my truck and often play it while on long trips.....hard to beat Maybelle's playing though.

  89. c.... ....

Hi Brian. This is a superb post, mate. Just wonderful to hear the Carters' version of this treasure of a song. Can I also suggest, for your listening pleasure + your channel fans : get hold of Rounder Records first-ever LP release, 1970 .. Rounder 0001 .. Artist : George Pegram, then 59 y.o. .. a genuine old-timey banjer player & vocalist. His version of "Never Grow Old" on that LP is my all-time fave of all. That GP performance will end up being the eventual song for my wake.

  90. B.... ....

I'm glad you like it. I am familiar with Karnes. I have posted some of his songs. I agree that the Carter Family is hard to beat. They had a such a beautiful way of singing and playing all their songs. Thanks for watching and thanks for watching! Be sure to check out my other videos. I have over 600 old time recordings like this one posted. Have a great day, Brian

  91. p.... ....

First heard this from kentucky musician Alfred Karnes. Love this Carter Family version.

  92. B.... ....

You are totally welcome! For a different, but still good version, check out Internet Archive. Look up Smith's Sacred Singers and you should find this song. You can download the mp3, like I say, it's different, but it's still good. Hope you have a good day, Brian

  93. m.... ....

Thanks for posting this! Did not know that the Carter Family recorded this song. One of my favorites!

  94. B.... ....

Cool! I have a fair number of recordings, so I will be posting them when I can. Stay tuned and thanks so much for watching, Brian

  95. H.... P....

Old hymns are my favorites ,all you can post is ok with me.

  96. B.... ....

I agree, the old hymns have such amazing words that you rarely find in modern church music. Thanks for watching and be sure to check out my other videos. Have a great day, Brian

  97. N.... ....

These timeless classics will never fade. Simple words, lovely harmony I'll never get tired of listening to these old-time treasures. Many thanks for this posting from an old school Country Church goin' Baptist.

  98. B.... ....

You're entirely welcome, they just don't have the same sound/words to the modern worship songs. These are real treasures!

  99. B.... ....

You bet! If I was to put up any more Carter Family hymns/spirituals, would you have any requsests?
