Carter Family, The - The Church In The Wildwood Lyrics

There's a church in the valley by the wildwood
No lovelier place in the dale
No spot is so dear to my childhood
As the little brown church in the dale

Oh, come, come, come, come
Come to the church in the wildwood
Oh, come to the church in the dale
No spot is so dear to my childhood
As the little brown church in the dale

How sweet on a clear Sabbath morning
To listen to the clear ringing bell
Its tones so sweetly are calling
Oh, come to the church in the dale

Oh, come, come, come, come
Come to the church in the wildwood
Oh, come to the church in the dale
No spot is so dear to my childhood
As the little brown church in the dale

There, close by the side of the loved one
'Neath the tree where the wild flowers bloom
She sleeps, sweet love sleeps, 'neath the willow
Disturb not her rest in the tomb

Oh, come, come, come, come
Come to the church in the wildwood
Oh, come to the church in the dale
No spot is so dear to my childhood
As the little brown church in the dale

Oh, come, come, come, come
Come to the church in the wildwood
Oh, come to the church in the dale
No spot is so dear to my childhood
As the little brown church in the dale

These songs are memories I cherish. My grandma and her 6 daughters would get together with their guitars and sing all these wonderful songs and each woman was an awesome singer and musician. Grandma would get me to join in on the fun and sing (I can't carry a tune in a bucket) but she would praise me anyway along with my mother and Aunts. To this day (I'm 70) I can still remember all the words to these wonderful old songs and will always sing along :-) OH YES, Wildwood Flower was my favorite !! The young man that I was dating when I was 20 came to the house and naturally Moma was singing and playing her guitar and piano. Jim ask my Moma if he could play her guitar. That boy started playing Wildwood Flower and picking that guitar just like my Grandma....we all cried and I knew I was going to married that boy right then!! We were married 5 months later and were together for 49 years until he passed away in 2018. He continued to play that song for me and I continued to cry every time :-)

We sing a version of this in my church. " I know of a dear little chapel". Now I know why I was always drawn to it. The Bluegrass roots.

Hey Adam!!! My Great-Great-Grandmother Edna Lillian-Vancourt Croll was born down in Mississippi in the year of 1902 and I just don't know if she listened to the Carter Family or not. Also you might not know that I am her great-great-grandson and I'm just seriously related to her through blood. Did you know that our 39th President Jimmy Carter and Country Singer John Carter Cash are really distant cousins thru his mom June Carter Cash, maternal aunts Helen and Anita Carter, and his Grandmother Maybelle Carter.

The Carter's will always have a place in my heart.  When I was growing up as we got our milk from the Cash dairy in Laveen, Arizona.  They were down home and good people.  Yea, I grew up a country girl walking to and from the dairy for our family of seven.  A childhood memory I will never forget.  Their music is heaven to my ears!

  74. A.... L....

Back in 1981 there was an article ran in the paper about my home church and they described it as "the little church in the wildwood." This song describes it to the "t"

  77. w.... h....

I sometimes wonder why A.P. Carter never got enough credit for being the impetus that made the Carter Family into the legend that they became. Perhaps we should thank him for recognizing the talent of Maybelle, her sister and their offspring.

    w.... h....

I would like to add a comment to the three, besides my one....but I am unable to decipher their meaning....oh well!

    w.... h....

    What means Thee Joseph?

    w.... h....

    wesley hill

    w.... h....

+wesley hill, I don't think he would care about that. I think he just sang, wrote music, and loved the Lord. I think it be dishonoring him to heap credit or praises on him.

  78. .... E....

Kan noen skaffe originalteksten til denne?

  79. R.... U....

  85. C.... M....

My grandma sang this song to me when I was a child. It is cherished.

    C.... M....

This is real music. Even in the church of today you can not find great music such as this.

    C.... M....

If the Church today sang hymns, perhaps we would '...Be doers of the Word, also.' Great Hymn.

    D.... K....

Apparently you do not know that Easley Riddle, a black man living in Kingsport Tennessee, about 10 miles from the Carter Home in the Clinch Mountains of Virginia, often traveled with A.P. Carter during his "song catching" travels in the mountains of Virginia, Tennessee, North and South Carolina. Mr Riddle often ate meals at the Carter home and often spent nights sleeping in the guest bedroom. Mr Riddle taught Maybelle how to play slide and blues guitar, and was a highly valued friend to the Carter Family.

Kinda weird behavior for a "racist family" don't you think?

    D.... K....

He has received some recognition. More is due him.

    D.... K....

So we basically have proof that they weren't racist, and no proof that they were. Your acusation is completely based on nothing. Read a book for once in your life.

  87. t.... ....

Leaning on the Everlasting Arms is a good one too.

  88. H.... D....

Was this one of the Bristol Sessions recordings? Correct me if I'm wrong.

    H.... D....

Not exactly, but they did record at the 'Sessions'. A.P. talked his wife Sarah and her sister Maybelle to travel to Bristol, Tenn - just 25 miles across the border from Maces Spring, Va, where they lived. Victor Talking Records was making early commercial recordings of country music,in 1927 and '28. Many groups recorded -- the two most famous that came out of those sessions were Jimmie Rodgers and the Carter Family. Apparently, 'Church in the Wildwood' wasn't recorded in those sessions -- at least it was not released until 1932.

Interestingly there IS a Little Brown Church in the Wildwood, in Bradford Iowa -- and music teacher William Pitts first composed the song way back in 1857, when the church had not yet been built, not until 1862. But he was so struck by the beauty of 'the vale', and the vision of a church there, that he wrote the song.

The church fell on hard times and closed in 1888, but was revived by a special preservation fund. It stands there today -- holding services ... greeting visitors ... and hosting weddings

    H.... D....

@Hunter Dowdle, "The Church In The WIldwood" was not recorded during the Carter Family Bristol Sessions (August 1-2, 1927), but later on October 13, 1932 at Victor Studio 2 in Camden NJ.

During the Bristol Sessions, on August 1, 1927, the Carter Family recorded in order, "Bury Me Under The Weeping Willow", "Little Log Cabin By The Sea", "The Poor Orphan Child", and "The Storms Are On The Ocean". On August 2, 1927, the Carter Family recorded "Single GIrl, Married Girl" and "The Wandering Boy" to finish out the six songs recorded at the Bristol Sessions.

    H.... D....

Maybelle and Sara Carter were not sisters--they were biologically cousins, they grew up in separate households, with two separate sets of parents. They eventually became sisters-in-law because they married two brothers, A.P. Carter (Sara) and Ezra Carter (Maybelle).

  89. C.... L....

Interesting, the women play the inst
    ruments!

    C.... L....

In fact, Maybelle had developed a special playing style that apparently was first used in their recordings and concerts.

    C.... L....

Maybelle played guitar, and sang harmony. Sara normally sang lead and usually played the auto harp, although she would play 2nd guitar on some songs. A.P. Carter sang lead on a few songs, but he normally sang back-up vocals, and did most of the arranging for the songs he discovered during his "song-catching" travels around the mountains of Virginia, Tennessee, North and South Carolina.

Although the Carter Family used only two instruments, their unique musical style and sound is unusually rich and full because Maybelle developed a superb guitar style of playing both lead and rhythm at the same time. Maybelle was, in effect, two guitarists playing the same guitar! In the 80+ years since the Carters first recorded, I've yet to hear any other group get such incredible full rich sound out of two instruments and three voices! The Carter Family sound and style is absolutely unique, timeless and superb beyond words to describe.

Some classify the Carter Family in with "Hillbilly Music", but I find that classification very problematic, because the Carter instrumentals used only guitar and auto harp and did not use traditional "Hillbilly" instrumentals with banjo, fiddle, base, etc. The unique style of the Carter Family is difficult to classify. If pushed to classify, I think it best to classify the Carter Family as "Folk Music of the highest order" because their pure, raw, real, sound and flawless, superb style, simply drips with an authenticity that all other folk musicians would kill to achieve. The Carters are at the very top of the top tier of all folk musicians in my book. Often called "The First Family of Country Music", I prefer to call the Carter Family "The First Family of American Music" because the influence of the Carters continues to be felt across all genres of American Music too powerfully to be denied.

  90. T.... O....

This played a lot in my childhood, in our home; and, it was in the hymnals in our church. . My father loved The Carter Family and I still have some of his albums, and needless to say, in the Carter Family's case - like father, like son.
