Carter Family, The - I Never Will Marry Lyrics
One morning as I rambled all down the seashore
The wind it did whistle and the waters did roar
I heard a fair damsel make a pitiful sound
It sounded so lonesome in the waters around
I expect to live single all the days of my life
The shells in the ocean shall be my deathbed
The fish in deep water swim over my head
She plunged her fair body in the ocean so deep
She closed her blue eyes in the waters to sleep
My love's gone and left me, the one I adore
She's gone where I never will see her any more
I never will marry or be no man's wife
The shells in the ocean shall be my deathbed
The fish in deep water swim over my head

Carter Family, The I Never Will Marry Comments
They forgot the line about how they'll mess around a little.
Such a sad but beautiful song by the famous Carter trio. I have loved the song since I first heard it in the 60's. Now I finally made my own recording https://youtu.be/aCeaQSWF32U
I love this song..
Well I love this , so likely because my Dad and Mom used to sing this when I was just a little boy in the 50's
Who are the 24 dumbasses who didn’t like this??
You have very sad lives...
I grew up listening to the carter family , this was one of the first songs i learned to play guitar and sing..
The Carter Family were the first musical mega stars of that new communications device, the radio. The relationship of A.P. and Sarah would have been front page on the magazines at the grocery check out.
i believe the carter family were the biggest sellers of music prior to ww1...
111sienna maybe prior to WW2.
Is this song about a lesbian? Or about a guy who lost his girl? It's unclear to me whose perspective it is?
@63DW89A
Thanks! Right back at ya!
it is sung in the perspective of the girl who commits suicide....
111sienna, jumpin into the sea.
63DW89A I just recently discovered that I like the original Carter family.
From a mans perspective here https://youtu.be/aCeaQSWF32U

Lyrically one of the all time greats
got to be one of the saddest songs ever.....the fish in deep waters, swim over my head....
I agree, such a sad song. The Peasall Sisters sing it as well and its even more heartbreaking to hear those girls sing it.
111sienna u think this is sad.listen to rose covered grave for my baby.x

I'm back here listening to this again. Love it so much, eyes are streaming.
I can't describe how much I love this song.
SHE NEVER WILL MARY.. I NEVER WILL MARY HEHE GREAT MUSIC I LIKE IT THE GUITAR HAS A GOOD SOUND.. THIS IS GOOD MUSIC FROM 1929 BUT THIS IS THE ONLY SOUND I REALLY LISTEN WITH JOY FROM VERY OLD SONGS. IT IS GOOD TO LISTEN..
Hi there !! I never hear before for this group "Th Carter Family"
I am so glad so happy bec I can listen so nice music..
I come from Europa...
Oswald that was in the Linda Ronstadt version. Lots of verses vary...
Great song love listing to it
I once heard a version which had an additional final verse (to a different tune): "There's many a change in the winter's wind/And change in the clouds' design/There's many a change in a young man's heart/But never a change in mine". Any ideas?
+Oswald Jarrett Joan Baez's version.
Linda Ronstadt sings that version also.
Thank you so much. This is one of my very favorite Carter Family songs.
geweldig
Ah, to have lived in the 30s and 40s in countryside with an acoustic guitar should have been heaven
what color?? Red, black, yellow white??
"Should"
those events were tough but they also made people tough and produced the greatest generation this country has ever seen and ever will this is a country now in moral decline and rot from within
@dave estes right, then there's modern Country music
😎
She's talking only about music...
thank you.
Please upload the same version sung differently by Patty Andrews in case you are in possession of the track...
Nothing else is worthy of listening to.
This song touches my heart.
This song is trad. Adapted from the 1864 song "Oh, My Love's Gone"
check my channel if ya can
So simple:so beautiful!
They were first cousins, but also sisters-in-law.
ah, like that, gracias amigo.
A lot of the old traditional songs are actually reworked Hymns, with different lyrics. For instance if you listen to "Can The Circle Be Unbroken" from The Carter Family, the melody and theme are taken from the hymn "Will The Circle Be Unbroken".
Sind Sarah und Maybelle Schwestern?
Christians (like the Carter family) sing about sin all the time. A hypocrite generalizes without learning. Either way this music is timeless and should be enjoyed by everyone.
I heard this 50 years ago, but didnt know the Carters sang it.
whats the diffrence between country and folk?
The term Country ,I think , Is short for Country and Western (American) ."Folk" from anywhere.
this is a traditional song from eireland
Yes, very old. There are many versions with different lyrics (though the refrain stays the same).
Love love their sound...awesome Tune!
purest music there is, period.
I also love the version by The Weavers
@ThornyRoseV You are probably right!
@baasting . I really doubt those hypocrits in the church would sing there about suicide which is suppose to be a sin..
@ipalindromei
lol any babtist church
Maybelle didn't have nearly the voice Sarah had..... But I guess this song fit her voice better.
@ipalindromei I didn't say this song was a hymn! I said some people may know this song from church as a song someone has singed. Maybe a folkgroup like The Carters performed this inside church without organ or piano, just their instruments :-)
Love this song!
@baasting Church?? What church would have this song as a hymn, and where can I sign up?
@RamJamable I wish youtube would make it where There's only "Like"
@Acexwanderer There were lots of different versions of this song by different groups, especially during the 50's folk revival. Other versions are hard to find, but were done by Irene and Ellen Kossoy, the Philo Glee & Mandolin Society, and the Brothers Four did a dressed-up version called “Damsel’s Lament.” You could call it a traditional folk song and be fine with it.
May I suggest that the single "dislike" comes from someone who has never married? Ha Ha on you, you music hater!
I have this on a 78....so this is the first time I've heard it without the crackle of playing in on my grandfather's Victrola....as a musician, I appreciate hearing this version, but sentimentally, I miss the crackle :)
@Acexwanderer For some it is. But maybe not for anybody. Most people know this song from the time they were kids, or perhaps from church.
Is this a traditional folk song?
love this song, my hubby and I sing this song
The very first song I ever learned to play on guitar nearly 40 years ago.
love the lyrics, love how Sarah sings it, I play this over and over
