Carter Family, The - Are You Tired Of Me, My Darling Lyrics

Are you tired of me, my darling
Did you mean those words you said
Had has made me yours forever
Since the day that we were wed?

Tell me, could you live life over
Could you make it otherwise?
Are you tired of me, my darling?
Answer only with your eyes

Do you ever rue the springtime
Since we first each other met
How we spoke in warm affection
Words my heart can n'er forget?

Tell me, could you live life over
Could you make it otherwise?
Are you tired of me, my darling?
Answer only with your eyes

Do you think the bloom's departed
From the cheeks you thought so fair?
Do you think I've grown cold-hearted
Beneath the load of woman's cares?

Tell me, could you live life over
Could you make it otherwise?
Are you tired of me, my darling?
Answer only with your eyes

Carter Family, The Are You Tired Of Me, My Darling Comments

The most heart-wrenching song the Carter Family sings, I think. Nanci Griffith gets the words wrong! As the Carters sing, it's: "Tell me would you love another, could you make it otherwise." tears me up every time! My favorite other than theirs, is Mike Craver's of the REd Clay Ramblers, in 1982.

Song brings tears to my eyes. First time I ever heard this song was my great grandpa singing it on a cassette tape. Such memories I have.

This is such a sweet---and yet haunting---song. Two aspects of it have puzzled me for years.

"Could you make another wife"---does she mean that the man MAKES the woman into the wife he wants? (And maybe he didn't succeed with her?)

"Answer only with your eyes"---Because she thinks he can't or won't tell the truth about his feelings? Or because she doesn't really want to hear the words?

"Otherwise" not "another wife". Could you make it otherwise?

Nanci Griffith once said said that this was such a tender and loving song for its time that it took two men to write it.

I heard this on "A Prairie Home Companion," in the '80s, done by somebody random, and had no clue it was a Carter family song. How great is this.
