Amazing. I had NO idea that was Paul Carrack in Ace! That was a perfect rendition of that song, I've always thought PC was one of the leaders of the blue eyed soul singers and this song pretty much nails it down.

Here is a compliment to Paul Carrack. I did not know he wrote and sang the song back in 1974. I always though it was Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes or the OJays. And did not know this person wrote and sang this song and was the Singer for Mike and the Mechanics and Squeeze. That is blowing my mind away. I happen to like all 3 of his songs from the 3 respective bands he sang in. Did not know he went back that far. Funny or interesting how things come together like that. That flipping me out that he wrote and sang How Long. Always thought it was a black vocalist. Credit Paul with a very soulful voice. Always liked that guy not really putting together his complete musical talent or history. Blows my mind.

40 years later and Paul’s voice is better than when ACE released this song. Fantastic.

Everybody thought this song was written about an affair but in fact it was a song that Paul wrote when the bass player left a band that Paul was in.... true story!

This is not going to be popular with the guy who published this but the 'sensational' Henry Spinetti on drums seems not to be able to get this groove, and is apparently on autopilot. Listen to Paul Carrack's long time drummer Dean Dukes (who really is very good) play this song and the difference is amazing. Good example of how a drummer can make or break a piece.

He never plays the samba ride, just straight eighths. I've played this many times and when I've played it with someone the first time and come in with the samba ride I get a big smile. It's on the record.

Paul played in ACE when this song was a hit. He went on to play with with Squeeze. He co-wrote the song that Timothy B Schmitz of the Eagles sang and was a hit., Love Will Keep Us Alive.

I've been a big Paul Carrack fan for decades. Great to see him on stage with Clapton-- both of them playin' the hell outta this fantastic, timeless song. I was reminded that when this song first came out, I thought it was performed by a black group, with black lead singer. Nope, instead it was one of those extraordinarily inspired and soulfully talented Brits. Where would we be without all their incalculable contributions to modern music? Hard to imagine, right?!

Paul Carrack has always been one of my favorite singers since 1972's How Long with Ace when I was a kid to Mike and The Mechanics. Just brilliant a brilliant lyricist and that voice!

can't jump on the Clapton bandwagon on this one - Carrack's Air Studios 2010 live version much better, the guitar solo truer to the original - which in my judgement cannot be improved on. I have never heard EC pay homage to an original solo, recorded by someone other than himself, by playing it. relies on the same old blues licks, listen to the guy who came before and tip your hat to her/him
