This is a beautiful rendition of the Skeeter Davis Classic - Although Karen was a far better singer than Skeeter Davis I still prefer the original -As far as the best female singer ever Eva Cassidy would be my choice but obviously Karen Carpenter is worthy of that claim also

Karen Carpenter was astonishing; she was "right on" with every note, & key change. Her vocals captured every nuance and tonal quality which today brings tears to this oldster's eyes. "Rest in peace Karen." I never thought you were a heavyweight anywhere except when you sang, and that was certainly your heavyweight performance, You transcended the woes of the world for us then and were saved from the savagery of the 21st century.

The last four notes she sang are the most perfect musical deciption of an absolut hopeless depressive condition I ever heard. Like falling in a black hole forever. Note the change in her timbre at this moment. It´s literally shocking. This is pop-avantgarde of the highest order, and Karen Carpenter was a genius.

@bubbel One of the most difficult things for a female singer to do is go from their higher register to their low instantly, Karen could do it easily, she called it her basement.

I just recently started to listen again, after 40+ yrs of rock and metal, and I'm haunted again by the voice as I was as a child.

Dave Berlanga hey Dave .. i can totally relate to that .. my earliest recollection of music is my mom’s radio playing in the background.. i was probably 4 or 5 years old.. this would’ve been in 65’/66’ .. and it was songs like these that i remember although at the time it would’ve been Skeeter Davis’s version playing on a country music station.. when i turned 12 or 13 i remember my older brother bringing home a few records and among them was the Guess Who , Jimi Hendrix and Deep Purple’s Machine Head ! needless to say i’ve been a rocker ever since .. now i’m about to turn 59 and i find myself listening to more and more 60’s / 70’s music ..a lot of it takes me back my childhood ! precious memories 👍🏻☮️

Same here. My father said she had the most beautiful voice in the world but with the Beatles and The Rolling Stones, Dave Brubeck Quartet etc I did not see it at the time. Now at 73 I have finally realized the truth. I listen to this daily along with Skeeter's version.
