I've been a major fan of Carpenters for 50 years. I've never heard another singer sound so flawlessly angelic, beautiful & perfect, whether singing in chorus or on leads. This girl's talent was incomprehensible, add she was quite an amazing drummer!

Though I love Karen's voice, I still prefer the Rod Stewart version of this song.
But that's just me ...

As much as I love the carpenters, I think this cheery rendition of this song totally misses the point of Tim Hardin's bleak and totally heartbreaking original, which speaks of realising that you are in love with someone who is basically an asshole who lies and bullshits you but for some reason you still try to see some good in them. I have never heard Rod Stewart's version, and have no intention of ever hearing it.

This version was my introduction to this song. It has always been one of my favorite recordings by the Carpenters. Now I can't stop hitting replay on the original version by Tim Hardin. His rendition tears my heart out.

Music from 60s-80s are timeless, especially that angelic voice of ms carpenter.

Vomit-inducing! The jaunty county beat completely misses the mark. Sounds almost jolly. Typical sugary middle of the road drivel of the time. Rod Stewart MADE this song.

Way WAY better than the Rod Stewart version. No offense to Rod, but the Carpenters just had that melodic sound...they were the best.

Tim Hardin, who wrote this sang it the best in my view. His voice just sounds vulnerable and real to the music and not so much like he was trying to make a hit record.

Seeing the recent PBS documentary on the Carpenters just reminds me how great an act they were.  Karen was as lovely as she was talented.  Richard was a genius, mostly behind the scenes.  Beautiful rendition of this song.  PP&M also had a little known, but great, version of this classic.

Karen is still the greatest female pop singer of the last 50 years.
