Carpenters, The - Reason To Believe Lyrics

If I listened long enough to you
I'd find a way to believe that it's all true
Knowing that you lied, straight-faced, while I cried
Still I'd look to find a reason to believe
Someone like you makes it hard to live without somebody else
Someone like you makes it easy to give, never think of myself

If I gave you time to change my mind
I'd find a way to leave the past behind
Knowing that you lied, straight-faced, while I cried
Still I'd look to find a reason to believe

Someone like you makes it hard to live without somebody else
Someone like you makes it easy to give, never think of myself

Someone like you makes it hard to think about somebody else
If I listened long enough to you
I'd find a way to believe that it's all true
I'd find a reason, a reason to believe (oh no)
And though I want you, you're just not what I need

Someone like you makes it hard to live without somebody else
Someone like you makes it easy to give, never think of myself

Someone like you makes it hard to live without somebody else
Someone like you, like you
I'd find a reason to believe
I would find a reason to believe

  9. B.... S....

Interesting fact & testament to Rich's brilliant arrangements were the Choral Crescendos at 0:55, 1:40 & 2:52. Add a complete crescendo drop at 2:27, this folks was 1970, without electronic gimmickry or AutoTune! 😊😎👍

  10. M.... M....

    nice harmonies

  11. R.... U....

SO SWEET YOUTH... LIKE A SO TENDER KISS.

  12. B.... S....

I've been a major fan of Carpenters for 50 years. I've never heard another singer sound so flawlessly angelic, beautiful & perfect, whether singing in chorus or on leads. This girl's talent was incomprehensible, add she was quite an amazing drummer!

  13. c.... s....

If I listen long enough to you
I'd find the way to believe that it's all true
Knowing that you lied straight face
    While I cried
    (*) And still I look
To find a reason to believe
Someone like you makes it hard to live
    Without somebody else
Someone like you make it easy to give
    Never thinking of myself
If you took the time to change my mind
    I could find a way
    To leave the past behind
Knowing that you lied straight face
    While I cried
    Repeat (*)
If I listen long enough to you
I'd find the way to believe that it's all true
Knowing that you lied straight face

Knowing that you lied straight-faced while I cried
Still I look to find a reason to believe

If I listened long enough to you
I'd find a way to believe that it's all true

  22. J.... O....

Love her voice love the way she plays the drums she was asome

  23. A.... S....

    The best!

  24. e.... e....

hermosa , como todas las canciones de  CARPENTERS.

  25. C.... ....

Beautiful, incredible. Just makes me wonder why she didn't lean towards a "Country" set on her Solo album? Instead she wasted her angelic talents on disco?

  26. J.... M....

best version ever along with peter paul&marry

  27. S.... O....

Karen can sing all kind of songs !! This is "folk music" branch for example !!

  28. J.... M....

peter paul and mary best version...

  29. C.... N....

Though I love Karen's voice, I still prefer the Rod Stewart version of this song.
    But that's just me ...

  30. W.... L....

As much as I love the carpenters, I think this cheery rendition of this song totally misses the point of Tim Hardin's bleak and totally heartbreaking original, which speaks of realising that you are in love with someone who is basically an asshole who lies and bullshits you but for some reason you still try to see some good in them. I have never heard Rod Stewart's version, and have no intention of ever hearing it.

  31. t.... d....

If there is a heavenly choir.. she's the lead singer!

  32. K.... K....

    Such a beautiful Woman.....

  33. T.... M....

    The CARPENTERS for ever

  34. .... ....

    この歌はカーペンターズの中では知名度は今一つですが、最高に癒される歌で大好きです(^^♪カーペンターズらしく、優しさに繊細さ、それにどこか物悲しさがある感じがしますね。

  35. g.... ....

Those bangs...those dreamy bedroom eyes...Oh, and Karen doesn't look bad either!

    g.... ....

Yes, she really does look adorable here as always, doesn't she?

    g.... ....

    That she does.

  36. C.... T....

Love the Carpenters but this is a terrible version.

    C.... T....

Were you expecting Led Zeppelin? It's the Carpenters! How could the Carpenters make their interpretation better?

    C.... T....

I LOVE this version..Stop with all the HATRED!

  37. S.... V....

This version was my introduction to this song. It has always been one of my favorite recordings by the Carpenters. Now I can't stop hitting replay on the original version by Tim Hardin. His rendition tears my heart out.

    S.... V....

Exactly, way better than any cover!

    S.... V....

This is also my original version. Sorry, I'm stuck on Karen's silky, emotive & unforgettable vocals. Absolutely the best singer of song for me.

  38. j.... s....

Music from 60s-80s are timeless, especially that angelic voice of ms carpenter.

  39. A.... H....

Vomit-inducing! The jaunty county beat completely misses the mark. Sounds almost jolly. Typical sugary middle of the road drivel of the time. Rod Stewart MADE this song.

  40. C.... ....

Richard's production & Karen's vocals were sick!  I just love this gal & her flawless presentation of every song she touched!

  41. l.... ....

    11/8/16

  42. r.... ....

What TV show/special was this? And do you know if this performance is available on DVD?

    r.... ....

It's from their TV show, Make Your Own Kind of Music. I don't know what DVD though.

  43. O.... R....

THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, AND IF NOT, THEN IT SHOULD BE ACKNOLEDGED SUCH

  44. A.... P....

Deviates too much from the original. Sorry.

  45. S.... J....

No one else compares to the Carpenters version.

    S.... J....

    The best!

    S.... J....

the violin solo sometimes makes me cry! this is definitely my favorite version of Reason to Believe period I love you Karen and Richard

    S.... J....

dedicate song to those who have cruelly misused me.

    S.... J....

@Susie Porter Susie, all the best for the future.

  46. k.... ....

Incredible cover of the great Tim Harden song. May you both Rest in Peace, while we can still enjoy your wonderful voices.

  47. H.... P....

    I love her voice

    H.... P....

    Without doubt!!!!

    H.... P....

    🌟 SUPERSTAR 🌟

    H.... P....

She's totally addicting. Anytime I've ever heard her, I'd have to listen thru the complete song, even if I was doing something else. She earned that respect!

    H.... P....

    Mee too!!!

    H.... P....

    Same here

  48. P.... W....

If she could have stayed behind the drums I think she would have been more comfortable with fame.  Such a fantastic voice, stilled way too early

    P.... W....

My father usd2 say that way back when, B4 she appeared sickly-thin. He understood somehow.

  49. S.... J....

    Rod's version was better.

  50. r.... ....

Way WAY better than the Rod Stewart version. No offense to Rod, but the Carpenters just had that melodic sound...they were the best.

    r.... ....

+ralphus44 - I really agree with ya. Karen and Richard knocked it out of the park with this one :-)

They sang it before Rod did lol

    r.... ....

Tim Hardin, who wrote this sang it the best in my view. His voice just sounds vulnerable and real to the music and not so much like he was trying to make a hit record.

  51. T.... J....

A REGRAVAÇÃO Dessa Música Feita Pelo Trio Wilson Phillips Em 1990...É 100 VEZES MELHOR Do Que Esse Original.

    T.... J....

    Eu gosto das duas versões.

    T.... J....

    Carpenters sempre melhor

  52. M.... B....

Seeing the recent PBS documentary on the Carpenters just reminds me how great an act they were.  Karen was as lovely as she was talented.  Richard was a genius, mostly behind the scenes.  Beautiful rendition of this song.  PP&M also had a little known, but great, version of this classic.

  53. M.... B....

Karen is still the greatest female pop singer of the last 50 years.

    M.... B....

    Try listening to Sandy Denny.

    M.... B....

    Ever. Period. : )

    M.... B....

I couldn't agree more!!! The best singer ever!!!💕💗🎼🎤🎵🎶🎹🎙🎸🎵🎶

    M.... B....

@martinarg101 different styles. apples and oranges.. i will always prefer karen singing TO ME NOT AT ME (ala barbra)... and yes, i think karen could sing anything barbra sang well, yet, i don't think barbra could sing everything karen did..

    M.... B....

    Michael Burkhalter
I agree. I can’t believe how much I adore her singing. Her “Merry Christmas, Darling” is my all-time favorite (non-religious) Christmas song. It pulls my heartstrings like none else. Love the Carpenters!!!

  54. B.... ....

The Carpenter's version was far superior to Rod Stewart!!!

    B.... ....

+Bobby - Absolutely! I can understand the lyrics better thanks to Karen's voice.

    B.... ....

    crap version by carpenters

    B.... ....

@John Fourna - That's why you watched it!

    B.... ....

my version is and i'm tone deaf

    B.... ....

I had never heard Rod's cut of this song before the Carpenters.... I love the Carpenters cut of this tune!

  55. P.... D....

"I'm sorry, Karen had a beautiful voice, but this is a trashy, horrible, bubblegum pop arrangement of a beautiful song."
Totally agree, and I would add the word 'schmaltz' to the list. I think Richard Carpenter would probably agree. He has commented on how they were forced to sound like this by the record label.

    P.... D....

And was Tim Hardin's recording more formidable than this?

    P.... D....

You need to clean out your EARS and stop reaping hatred on one another...I totally DISAGREE with you! Who pissed in your con flakes this morning? Do we need a butt hurt report?

  56. D.... i....

Love Karen...THIS SONG IS THE MOST ABUSIVE SONG I THINK SHE SANG...Serious people listen to the LYRICS...YIKES! I'd RUN from that GUY!!!

    D.... i....

spoken like a true abusive man...you rock!

    D.... i....

@DIRGES DARK This song wasn't written by her or about her. It's a cover. It wasn't even written from a woman's perspective. You've spoken about what you know not, and when caught have shown what not you truly know.

    D.... i....

This was 1970. I'd bet that guy ain't running much any more!

    D.... i....

@Coupydog - Like Rodney once said, "if you see me running, it means the laxatives are working"!

  57. m.... ....

I am not surprised at all that this is THE best version of this song.  Karen Carpenter was, after all, a perfect angel who graced us with her presence for too few years

  58. p.... m....

    composed by Tim Hardin

  59. N.... G....

    Love Ricky Nelson's version.

  60. s.... ....

My original, too. Love the subtle "countrifying" here and of some of Richard's arrangements ("Top of the World" e.g.).

  61. s.... t....

For me , I heard this waaay before Rod Stewart's so this is my original version

  62. U.... ....

Not true... it actually sounds beautiful on her voice, specially with the harmonies.

  63. G.... V....

was ok I guess, not a patch on Rods tbh
