Carpenters, The - Love Is Surrender Lyrics

Talk about love
how it makes life complete
You can talk all you want
make it sound nice and sweet,
But the words have an empty ring,
and they don't really mean a thing,

[Chorus:]
Without Him love is not to be found;
not to be found.
For love is surrender,
Love is surrender to His will
Love is surrender to His will

Sing about love
and the strength it can give
You can sing how you're ready
to face life and live,
But you know as the days go by
that no matter how hard you try,

[Chorus]

Shout about love
and the wars will all end
You can shout we're all brothers
and even pretend
But you can't cover up the past
just pretending we'll never last,

[Chorus]

I love the groan that Mr. Carpenters inserts.

    Talk about love
    How it makes life complete
You can talk all you want
Make it sound good and sweet
But the words have an empty ring
And they don't really mean a thing
Without love you are not to be found
You are not to be found
    For love is surrender
You must surrender if you care
You must surrender if you care
    Shout about love
Then the wars will all end
You can shout "we're all brothers"
    And even pretend
But you can't cover up the past (cover up the past)
    Just pretending will never last
Without love you are nothing at all (without love)
    You are nothing at all
    For love is surrender
You must surrender if you care
You must surrender if you care
    Love is surrender
You must surrender if you care
You must surrender if you care
    a-a-a-re!

I hear this song, and I'm back laying on our living room carpet in front of the fireplace, playing with my miniature football helmets again, while this is playing on the record player and Mom's in the kitchen cooking, and school seemed like it would last forever. Now, retirement is on the horizon and I still kick myself for not getting my mom's recipe for her spaghetti sauce. But how nice to hear the songs that were the soundtrack to my childhood again.

    Life goes too fast...

For Carpenters' songs, I think it would not be entirely inappropriate to rig the "dislike" thumbs-down button with something that causes a massive explosion on the device of the person clicking it. Very few people would be affected, and those that were would be no big loss to the whole of humanity. I'd say disliking a Carpenters' song warrants abject annihilation.

A bit severe, but I agree with U on all points.

A great, great little piece! Thanks for posting. Aren't their harmonies addicting? (And just try not to join in, on top or in between, right?) I think the original song had "Jesus is the answer", but they changed it to "love is the answer," so as to make it non-religious. Both are actually true, though, because they mean the same thing-- every deep thing that you seek to fulfill yourself is found only in the Fountain of All Being, the Source of Everything Good-- Jesus the Christ. He received what we deserve, in our place, so we wouldn't have to, and then freely gives us what we could never earn or qualify for, life eternal in a very real Paradise, where joy and pleasures have no end.

Ok Stephen U caught me 🙈🙉🙊

Awesome idea Mr. Samford, our swing choir runs on stage to the opening vamp , girls first of course, John D on the keys, Eric C does the "huah" (1:13), awesome close harmony, so good in Jr. High that Jazz festival high schoolers praised us, those were the times, spring 1974 when we sang it. Wow, such good times.

    D.... S....

    Daniel Shumway hell yeah!!!!

    D.... S....

Who is Eric C? He is not listed on the credits of close to you anywhere.

    D.... S....

Sorry never mind, I should’ve read your comment a little more closely.

    D.... S....

Eric’s he wished he was on there LOL

Worth noting that they secularized the lyrics. Ralph Carmichael, the songwriter, is who I consider to be the father of contemporary Christian music. Richard’s arrangement here is an uptempo version of the arrangement found on Mr. Carmichael’s 1969 album “I Looked For Love”. Between that album and the pop/rock Christian musical “Tell It Like It Is” (also 1969), this song became a CCM classic.

  13. m.... ....

    Love it!Miss Karen's voice..

  14. R.... S....

I love this song! Karen shows off her ease of range...certain points, she goes higher than in most songs, then goes very low when she sings the chorus " you must surrender if you can". She was such an amazing talent...and a very beautiful woman. I miss her!

  15. S.... ....

the chorus sounds like "the mysterious cities of gold"

  16. W.... B....

A brilliant album, particularly for artists just having their first hit single.

  17. d.... ....

The way they were able to "Carpenterize" certain songs and really make them their own is fascinating. I'd like to hear Richard Carpenter explain the exact process.

    d.... ....

Good point, but how come Richard hasn't been able2 "do" that again for the past 33 years?  Where'd it go?  ...so Karen is the missing ingredient!

    d.... ....

    No doubt about that!

    d.... ....

I hear a lot of Burt Bacharach in a number of their songs.

    d.... ....

there was also a lot of Paul Williams in their songs.
