Carpenters, The - Johnny Angel Lyrics

Johnny Angel, Johnny Angel, Johnny Angel,
You're an Angel to me.

Johnny Angel, how I love him.
He's got something I can't resist,
But he doesn't even know that I exist.

Johnny Angel, how I want him.
How I tingle when he passes by.
Every time he says "Hello" my heart begins to fly.

I remember how I get carried away.
I dream of him and me, and how it's gonna be.

Other fellas call me up for a date,
but I just sit and wait, I'd rather concentrate ...

... on Johnny Angel.
'Cause I love him.
And I pray that someday he'll love me.
And together we will see how lovely heaven will be.

Carpenters, The Johnny Angel Comments
  1. S.... C....

NOT better than Shelley Fabares....not even close!

  2. J.... B....

Few people have a voice like Karen but this is Shelleys song forever !!!

  3. R.... T....

Beautiful...but Shelley did it! It was the time. Sweeter in the early 60s

  4. a.... ....

Karen Carpenter what a young little fox who left us way too quick one of the purest and cleanest voices you'll ever hear... We miss you Karen

  5. T.... C....

    Better voice: Karen...Best version: Shelly...

  6. C.... W....

I loved Karen Carpenter 's voice her ballads like Rainy Days and Monday's no better singer. That being said I loved Shelley Fabares better mainly because I remember watching the Donna Reed and we watched her grow up. I know I am aging myself but when Shelley sang I was just a little girl and it was one of the first songs I heard as a young girl that i would sing along with!!!!! I am not ashamed to admit i still do!!!!!

  7. G.... W....

    Best version in my opinion.

  8. j.... ....

wow this song was made for shelley. karen's beautiful voice had no business anywhere near this song.

  9. F.... L....

Both excellent. Dont make me choose! I dont like this game!

  10. L.... J....

I still like the original version.... but I do love Karen's own songs..

  11. A.... M....

That voice! There will never be another Camelot...

  12. T.... ....

Karen did a wonderful.job on this song...but....Shelly still did it best....

  13. B.... S....

Ok Listened again. Awesome. Karen does this song solid. If only I hadn't wanted to be part of the Stone family

  14. B.... S....

First listen of KC singing this: deep.soulful.dreamy. Shelly's has the innocence of being 16. Would of been gr8 to have KC singing weightier (no disrespect or pun in word choice, just couldn't come up with other) standards or classics.

  15. H.... S....

    I also like both versions.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wt7UYKepRLU

  16. T.... S....

    Shelly was much better.

  17. J.... F....

Shelly was 16 when she sang it, beautiful and I think represented the innocence and sweetness we have lost as our music has devolved into basically 3 lyrics, bitches, ho's and kill the po-lice and people wonder why 18 year's are lost crying and running for their safe spaces with no moral foundation to cling onto.

  18. A.... T....

I like Karen's version better. She just sings better. She has "the voice!"

  19. T.... F....

Good but not as good as the original.

  20. 3.... ....

Not better, just different! Also, Laurie Loman did it a year before Shelley in 1960.

  21. D.... B....

Sorry, Shelly still on top, but good runner up.

  22. S.... J....

Woww...nice , Many thanks for sharing.

  23. A.... R....

Even though Shelley Fabares wasn't a singer, she did a nice job but Karen was a singer and I love her smooth voice. So sad that she passed so young.

  24. R.... S....

No it's Shelley by a long shot. Shelley sang with teenage innocence that took me back to high school.

  25. W.... S....

Well what doesn't karen sing better?

  26. j.... s....

Shelley is much better, Karen just didn't have the right voice for this one.

  27. E.... E....

Her voice always seemed so full of sadness even in upbeat songs.....I enjoyed this very much though.🌺

  28. J.... E....

I love Karen Carpenter and her voice is absolutely perfect and I had the album this Trac was on and always loved it but,I still prefer the Shelly fabaret version best,I just melt every time I hear Shelly singing it

  29. C.... F....

Shelley Fabares then and always.....our childhood and the Donna Reed Show. No other beautiful voice can be equal

    C.... F....

    yes, Yes, YES!!!

  30. j.... w....

Karen's version didn't pull at my heartstrings like Shelly's.

  31. p.... ....

Love Karen Carpenter's voice, but she sings this like she knows it's not "her" song. Shelley's phrasing and tone are unique and magical.

  32. B.... P....

Nice, but this lacks the harmonics of the original recording by Shelley Fabares.

  33. E.... H....

    I also like both versions

  34. p.... a....

    both have beautiful voices,

  35. s.... ....

Karen's voice still makes me cry...

  36. Z.... H....

Original better even tho Carpenter has a much better voice

  37. J.... J....

I don't think so. Karen was a good singer but Shelly's better as far as I am concerned singing this particular song. My opinion.

  38. J.... C....

They each have a unique voice. Karen is singing it much lower than Shelley. I like Shelley Fabares better.

  39. W.... ....

BOTH versions were fantastic. -----------THAT said, just hearing Karen do this the 1st time I played the album, I was just in awe. -----------------------------------WolfSky9

  40. a.... n....

    name movie? plz

  41. R.... G....

A very beautiful version. I love it.

  42. J.... P....

Look, we all loved Karen Carpenter, but Ms Fabares has owned _Johnny Angel_ for decades. God, rest Karen Carpenter. But Shelly Fabares still has the song.

  43. J.... C....

Good cover of a great song. Karen has the pipes but Shelley still owns it.

  44. r.... ....

Every singer has there own unique sound that separates from the rest of others. Of course the original is gladly appreciated, but so are a few that make it sound beautifully done.

In this case I love both Shelley & Karen who sang this song. Both having there own unique, beautiful sound.

  45. S.... S....

    Both were good to me!!!

  46. r.... m....

Karen has a great voice, but how can people say that someone sounds better than you if that's your voice .Sometimes I hear people say this person sounds better than this person ,how is this possible if that's the persons voice.I hope I'm making sense .example if you say Good morning ,and then another person says good morning ,how can I say that this person sounds better than you ,or visa versa you sound better than them .When we all have our Individual voice.

  47. B.... S....

Good version but nobody beats Shell

  48. W.... Z....

Karen was perhaps the best female vocalist of her time, certainly . . . . with all due respect to Ella Fitzgerald, Joan Baez, Mary Travers, Timi Yurio, etc. I just prefer her rich tonal quality. So sad that she didn't live to get the recognition she deserved.

  49. M.... M....

What a loss when Karen died. Talk about an angel! Love both versions!

  50. L.... F....

    Karen did a better cover.

  51. J.... P....

Karen and Shelley both sung this song beautifully. If anyone else attempted to try to sing it I'm 100% sure that they will screw it up with too much computer and electronic crap.

  52. B.... H....

    Both are super..  double hit

  53. L.... F....

Love Karen's voice. My goal is to dance as smooth as she sings. I'm still working at that.

  54. M.... F....

Karen Carpenter, a voz feminina mais linda da história.

  55. m.... ....

Love both versions but this is Shelley Fabares's song.

  56. I.... C....

Yeah, it's kind of hard to choose which I like best, because both versions are unique to the person who sings it, although I'm kind of a big fan of Karen. Yet, Shelley did a great job as well!  :)

  57. S.... T....

Karen Carpenter was a professional singer. Shelley Fabares was an actress who was given a song to sing as part of a television comedy.

  58. R.... B....

Karen had much more experience as a vocalist but for Shelly just being a child, she tore it up.

  59. M.... C....

carpenter has no innocence in her voice,,sounds like a mature 35 year trying to act young, ridiculous

  60. X.... M....

    Shelly Fabares who?

  61. S.... O....

I like the "mic in her throat" effect of this recording... Stellar technically, like most Carpenters recordings... Also like the tinkling piano.

  62. H.... A....

Are the background singers singing "shuddup shuddup".. sure sounds like it to me!

  63. F.... V....

Karen was perfect but the original of the song typical stays with people the most unless they heard other later versions first.

  64. E.... M....

I like Karen carpenter she doesn't song Johnny angel as good as Shelly Fabares tho Karen singing to low for that she does hurt hurt bacharach songs the best

  65. R.... A....

I love Karen Carpenter and every song she has ever done. And she was taken away from us way too soon. But, with all due respect, no, Shelley had a voice that no one could match. Not for that song, during that era. I grew up watching the Donna Reed show and it was a wonderful memory. But. Johnny Angel was done perfectly by only one actress. Shelley herself admitted--she was not a singer. Karen was one of the best singers. But. Just not for that one song and the generation it was made for.

  66. B.... A....

    WOW!!!!

  67. R.... J....

Karen can sing any song! What a shame we lost her so young!

  68. N.... D....

Is Karen Carpenter related to John Carpenter

  69. w.... ....

    Shelley didn't really sing it.

  70. T.... ....

Both Karen and Shelley's versions are good but simply different. There is something more depressive in Karen's version. Shelley's version is more "puppy love" and more dreamy than melancholy. I prefer Karen's.

  71. H.... A....

damn... her low notes are pure velvet and warmth - absolutely fantastic singing!

  72. D.... N....

    a beautiful love song

  73. s.... t....

Shelly, definitely. Love them both though.

  74. b.... ....

Just listen to this...that voice ~

  75. j.... n....

Karen's version is good but the song will always be associated with Shelley.

  76. B.... ....

    Shelley sings this song better

  77. J.... R....

It’s like sound of silence by Simon and Garfunkel versus sound of silence by Pentatonix. They’re both great in their own way

  78. W.... ....

Much as I love Karen Carpenter, the original was best.

  79. A.... D....

    Nonononono.not even close...

  80. J.... K....

I love Karen Carpenter's voice. Shelley Fabares was the first to admit that she wasn't really a singer. Yet somehow Shelley's voice makes the song. The song is for a high school girl or young woman. Karen's voice is rich and mature. She sings the song beautifully, but her voice doesn't have the innocence the song needs. Also, Shelley's version is more upbeat and sounds more like a 60s song. I enjoy both versions, but I prefer Shelley's a little more.

  81. S.... M....

Both versions are nice but I do prefer Shelley's more. Just be glad this wasn't covered by Bette Midler...horror! Lol

  82. b.... ....

Karen Carpenter had a voice that could sing ANY kind of song.  I like this version, but in my mind I will always associate this song with Shelley Fabares.

  83. g.... ....

Every comment here is "she sings it way better obviously but you can't beat the original!" Whereas it should be "the original is way better obviously but man if once in a while you just want to absolutely drive the powerful opiate that is 'Johnny Angel' into your brain..."

  84. C.... K....

Shelly Fabares by far. That version is like angels singing. This version is just not the same. I'm not hating on Karen's voice but this can't hold a candle to the original.

  85. R.... S....

I love Karen Carpenter and technically she is a much better singer. If you watch Shelly Fabare’s video on the song she admits she was out of her comfort zone when asked to sing this song.

  86. L.... F....

Shelley is the greatest for me she is the lady who made this song what it is. Karen is all so amazing one of the best female vocalist ever. They are both different have their own style but to be fair about this no Karen is not better the Shelley. Both deliver their own style ✌🏻✌🏻

  87. D.... W....

Both Shelley and Karens version are beautifully sung. Wow

  88. G.... F....

As much as I love the carpenters, I prefer Shelley, Laurie, and Renee Martel's version better.

  89. G.... H....

Sorry, good, but not better than Shelley.....

  90. T.... 2....

I love Karen Carpenter but I prefer the original version. That song requires a more school girl sound and Shelley Fabares gives the song more meaning for puppy love..

  91. w.... ....

Karen does a great job, but it's Shelley's song.

  92. A.... C....

    Karen needed a Cornish pasty

    ....every day.

  93. J.... T....

Love them both, but like Shelley's best with the sweet, innocence of her voice.

  94. L.... C....

THIS BROAD CANT SING....SHE IS BITTING OF THE ORIGINAL VERSION THAT SOUNDS A HELL OF ALOT BETTER....

  95. 6.... ....

I have never heard this version before nice...but I prefer SF...sweet and innocent...angelic.

  96. H.... M....

No ,,Shelly is still my #1

  97. T.... D....

Nobody comes close to the Karen had, a voice of an angel 😇

  98. b.... b....

I give this one to Karen. Sorry Shelly.

  99. c.... ....

    No way!
