Carpenters, The - Honolulu City Lights Lyrics

Looking out upon the city lights and the stars above the ocean,
Got my ticket for the midnight plane and its not easy to leave again.
Took my clothes and put them in the bag; try not to think just yet of
leaving.
Looking out into the city night and it's not easy to leave again.

[Chorus:]
Each time Honolulu city lights stir up memories in me.
Each night Honolulu city lights bring me back again.
You are my island sunset; you are my island dream.

Put on my shoes and light a cigarette.
Wonderin' which of my friends will be here
Standin' with their leis around my neck.
It's not easy to leave again.

[Chorus:]
Each time Honolulu city lights stir up memories in me.
Each night Honolulu city lights bring me back again.
Bring me back again.

The purest voice ever created by God.

  2. T.... ....

    Nuff said

  3. n.... h....

    Angelic voice!

  4. k.... H....

*It is not only a beautiful piece, but it has certain points at certain times in her voice there is something very tragically poignant that combines with the particular note and her vibrato to create something mystically moving and beyond beautiful. For me this is actually her best song.

  5. k.... H....

I'm so glad you made this version of this song available on YouTube. I haven't it heard since the 80's.

  6. S.... A....

Karen's voice rips my heart open every time! Best ever!

  7. T.... O....

Karen's delivery of this song (Honolulu City Lights) didn't impress me much at first. But after a while, I've grown to love it, together with "Boat to Sail" and "Sailing on the Tide." Karen was absolutely versatile. She was capable to become whatever she was singing. She could show through her voice alone that she was relaxed, sexy, joyous, childish, mature, sad, melancholic, depressed, angry, or anything at all.

  8. M.... S....

Sorry Richard and Karen, but Keola and Kapono “own” this song. Your cover sounds like somethingI I’d hear on “The Lawrence Welk Show” !

  9. A.... S....

Simply beautiful Karen was an angel. Such a hauntingly beautiful voice never ever to be heard by a beautiful. like Karen so greatly missed and very muched loved.

  12. D.... D....

I am back in Maui once 1976. My sister lived here and knew the composers, The Beamer Brothers. But Karen has and will be my most favorite female vocalist and, as always, does justice to this lovely song.

  13. M.... S....

I could (and do) listen to this all day, amazingly beautiful, Karen's voice just cuts right into my soul, so feminine and rich. RIP ma belle!

    M.... S....

Mystic Seer Feminine. Yes, that was her voice for sure.

  18. K.... M....

I was in Maui a few weeks ago. It was hard to leave this beautiful island and go back to the drudgery of everyday work. This song will always bring back fond memories of my trip.

I ve lived in Honolulu for 15 years and didn't know that the angel covered this tune.

  21. G.... B....

Such a beautiful song ; have loved this Carpenters version for years. Even when they did a cover, they made the song their own. And Karen's rich alto voice as ever was pitch perfect. When you listen to recordings like this, you realise more than ever how amazing she truly was.

  30. n.... p....

That voice again! Sublime. It´s like an Angel singing directly from the heaven. It´s magic! karen is immortal! One of the precious and few things in this futile life, that is reaching its end at last...

    n.... p....

Wouldnt it be cool to have The Carpenter version of Honolulu City lights played on a plane as the lights of Honolulu come into focus! What a classy thing to do!

  31. a.... p....

when i was in hawaii for vacation last year, a friend of mine introduced me to this song. we were in a karaoke bar in a hotel in oahu and he sang this on stage and right away i love the melody and the words. but i didn't realize this song was covered by the carpenters as well, and as always when you hear a song from karen and with that voice of hers, this song gets a very special mention! :)

  32. O.... G....

One of my top favorite Carpenter songs. Karen as ever is pitch perfect.

  33. T.... ....

Karen Carpenter's voice is amazing and this version of the version too! #SlowJams #HawaiiSlowJams

  36. O.... ....

Karen was was born the same year as me and I adored her since I was a kid. She had such natural beauty. An angel who left us way to early. That voice was untouchable. Karen could have sang the phone book and it would have sounded beautiful.
    I love you Karen
    I miss you

    O.... ....

    Perfect.

    O.... ....

    Have a nice day.

  37. A.... S....

Just untouchable as a singer, and extremely UNDERRATED drummer, male or female! You are my Idol as a singer! I was just three you when she passed away. Karen Thank You and and ABBA for getting High School, and life the way it is gotten. Gone but NEVER FORGOTTEN! Karen Carpenter 1950-1983. -A-

    H.... ....

HawaiianJou That's what I thought! KAC is superb!

    H.... ....

HawaiianJou I like both versions. It’s like comparing apples and oranges. Both are good.

  43. J.... M....

Gorgeous scenery of Waikiki and Honolulu. Mahalo for sharing all of it, and Karen's voice for us to hear.

  44. J.... M....

So sad she died so young. Such a huge voice and talent. Blessed to have her recordings to continue her music legacy.

  45. M.... ....

    Merci ....thanks !

  46. N.... ....

    oh, okay. cheers, then.

  47. M.... ....

It is a very beautiful song and I am a fan of Karen..

  48. M.... H....

after living in the tropical Pacific for 30 years, the last 3 in Honolulu, I know this song to be of great meaning and feeling for all islanders. the Beamer Brothers are by far my favorite artists for this song, because it comes from their souls. It is as much a city anthem as Billy Joel's New York State of Mind or I Left My Heart in San Francisco....and speaks as well to the feelings of the itenerate musicians as those sung by Jimmy Buffet, John Denver and Dan Fogelberg.

  49. N.... ....

i'm not sure how to take that. oui can mean operating under the influence, is a men's adult pornographic magazine, is a french word that means "yes" in english, and gawd knows what else.

  50. M.... ....

    OUI..........

  51. z.... ....

Beautiful song by The Carpenters. I still miss Karen's voice to this day.

  52. S.... M....

Mind, the original will always be my favorite, but this re-make is nice, too.

  53. K.... M....

    Aloha
Good choice Richard, for I know you're the reason that Karen recorded Honolulu City Lights. Mahalo to Keola and his brother Kapono for a great song. BUT thank you for a great voice you are sure missed BUT not forgotten...
    A hui hou, Kauhi

  54. C.... ....

    I agree !

  55. C.... ....

Never heard this dynamite tune before ! INCREDIBLE ! As great a song as the angelic Karen Carpenter ever sang. If you truly love music as I do, how can you NOT miss her beautiful voice.

  56. O.... ....

Holy crap. Never knew Karen Carpenter covered this song. Beautiful.

  57. T.... K....

    THANX for the post..
    Love it..
Miss ya dear Karen.. * sigh *

  58. N.... ....

great-sounding audio. karen blends her high and low registers so beautifully here.

  59. C.... B....

A voice like no other. I never tire of listening to her.

  60. M.... ....

je ne connaissais pas ....évidement , avec Karen Carpenter c'est magnifique ...! Mon Dieu, qu'est ce quelle chante bien ....une voix envoutante ...for ever ...!

  61. M.... R....

Karen has such a beautiful voice...awesome

  62. N.... ....

i just listened to the beamer version, and while it is beautiful, i can honestly say that i would rather listen to karen's sweet, rich voice singing this than them.

    N.... ....

    No1KCfan6 I think so too!

  63. A.... ....

I love this song so much had no idea they coverd this

  64. H.... D....

every time i come and go from home i lay and thin kof words while looking out the plane window... i love her voice never knew she sang this...

  65. B.... M....

AAAAAAHHHHHH BEAUTIFUL, SURE DO MISS THE PERSON AND THE VOICE OF KAREN CARPENTER

  66. O.... ....

Had this been released during Karen's lifetime, I wonder if she & Richard would have recorded a "Carpenters" multi-tracked harmony for the chorus? The Beamer Brothers harmonized on the chorus in their version, and it sounds wonderful. The OK Chorale backs Karen here, but they can't come close to the magic of Carpenters overdubs.

  67. D.... C....

Not the same, Haole version.........Still nice for her to give a nod to the place...

  68. i.... ....

Karen's version is so polished and her voice is so beautiful, but she doesn't sound Hawaiian, which detracts from the core of the song. Beamers' version is much more moving.

  69. w.... ....

I am just reading the new bio about Karen and they mentioned this song. Wonderful .... Mahalo for letting me hear this.

  70. m.... ....

thanks for posting and as usual a GREAT presentation :) I love this song! Karen's voice is truly AMAZING!!!!

  71. k.... ....

    原曲も良いですが、カレンの歌は最高です。

  74. P.... S....

Her voice is beautiful and missed so much. Thanks for doing one of my favorite songs. Honolulu, I wish I was back home.

  75. i.... ....

I never ever heard this before! Thank you Karen for loving my home and finding it to be in your heart, but I got to say that Da Beamers did it best and they carry the flavor and style of home and truely "stir up memories in me".
