Carpenters, The - Eventide Lyrics

Lying under barren skies
The light escaping
From my eyes
Below the moon
Walking down the avenue
I'm followed by
The afterglow
The velvet rose
Of evening grows

Weary to be home again
Among the faces
Of my friends
The day is done
Candles burning by the sea
Are waiting for me
Patiently
I wish the same
For you

Aurora starts the album (Morning opens quietly...) and Eventide finishes It (The day is done...). The songs are memorable, they remind me of my melancholic adolescence.

Some of the most beautiful music I ever heard.

There is a melancholic, wistful quality to both these pieces which seems to reflect the special quality of Karen Carpenter's voice. She remains sadly missed. As a young man I learned the lyrics of these pieces and they have remained with me ever since.

I always thought since these two interludes weren't complete songs, that there should have been one more tune on each side of the Horizon album.

I agree. Karen's voice was absolutely stunning during these sessions. Her warm alto simply glowed. I feel she never sounded the same after '75.

What makes you think they aren't complete songs?

    Amazing

Words and music by Richard Karpenter & John Bettis. One of the most impressive songs(and composition/arrangement) by the Carpenters. Sounds almost like classical music, and the harmonic progression in the last chords along with Karen's low register is stagering.

         A beautiful sound....
