Carpenters, The - Crescent Noon Lyrics

Green September
Burned to October brown
Bare November
Led to December's frozen ground
The seasons stumbled round
Our drifting lives are bound
To a falling crescent noon

Feather clouds cry
A vale of tears to earth
Morning breaks and
No one sees the quiet mountain birth
Dressed in a brand new day
The sun is on its way
To a falling crescent noon

Somewhere in
A fairytale forest lies one
Answer that is waiting to be heard

You and I were
Born like the breaking day
All our seasons
All our green Septembers
Burn away
Slowly we'll fade into
A sea of midnight blue
And a falling crescent noon

Very Celtic sounding. Passionate, deep, full of mood. Sung by arguably the best female voice of her generation.

  9. D.... S....

    My fav. 💞💞💞💞💞💞

  10. G.... P....

My albums always read The Carpenters. Now The is gone and it's just Carpenters. If history's going to change, dammit, why can't Karen live again? She died of ipecac poisoning now! Before, she had heart failure. This simulation mocks humanity.

  11. D.... D....

Jesus, she has a voice GOD needed his is choir. Just WOW.

  12. M.... J....

Like a rare masterpiece painting ! Beautiful sublime!

  13. E.... ....

Great song, but it owes a heavy debt to Erik Satie, Gymnopedie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_fuIMye31Gw

  14. L.... B....

This song is the only thing able to calm my anxiety.

  20. t.... s....

".....answer that is waiting to be heard".....2:47, hauntingly, beautiful harmonies.

  21. M.... E....

Karen's voice sounds so mystical, like a moon fairy. She makes my heart shiver like the cold whisper of autumn. So beautiful and haunting.

  22. p.... ....

There are no words to describe how this song makes me feel.....

  23. C.... N....

I must admit this was my first time hearing this powerful ballad. W-O-W! With a little "window dressing," this gem could be a bonafide hit on today's easy listening charts. Just sayin.....

  24. B.... K....

    Carpenters most underrated tune!

  25. b.... r....

Richard Carpenter is the greatest arranger in the business.

  26. J.... S....

I had a free pass to attend a Carpenters concert at the U. of Utah and I will always cherish the memory of that night. However, I did note that listening to Karen sing to an audience of 17,000 or so wasn't the same as listening to her in the intimacy of a quiet room where it was just her singing to me alone. In my mind I see her and Richard in a small darkened nightclub about 11:30 at night, me at a table by myself (as usual) and Karen's singing telling me that she knows how I feel and we share that moment together. I love you Karen, thank you.

  27. W.... U....

Oh Jesus... Help me please... I've been suffering since Karen left us...since she left me... When I met her I was twelve years old.... It's a long time ago.... (1973 at the airport) Oh! Karen you came and hugged me and kissed my face.... From that moment on I feel in love with you.... Since then I have never loved anyone else in my life. I feel like a widower without you here. When you left us.... When you left me... I died together with you in my soul....I suffer everytime I hear you singing.... Your sad eyes and your sweet voice kill me slowly.... Someday I will go where you are Karen and then I'll be together with you.... Forever and ever... Please Karen wait for me...wait for me my eternal love.

  28. j.... ....

This must be what heaven sounds like....😌

  29. g.... 4....

My dad had a 8 track player in his 69' cuda we heard the Carpenter, alot and we grew up listening to them. What i wasn't prepared for is losing my dad to cancer. This song is beautifully haunting especially where there are 4 seasons. We enjoyed their music ee just didn't want it yo end so trajectly. 🌹 miss you dad.

  30. M.... J....

  33. R.... F....

*Karen could have sung the old L.A. phone directory and made it sound beautiful.* 🎶🎶🎶

    R.... F....

Don't disrespect her by having that despicable Trump shit on her video!

  34. K.... C....

I thank God I grew up with her music.. Purity at its Best.

  35. R.... D....

    Profoundly haunting...

  36. T.... M....

I purchased this album when I was nine years old, and proved to one and all that... yes, even I can own a precious work of art.

  37. J.... A....

    missing Autumn

  38. S.... S....

Oh man...this is so perfect on every level.

  39. J.... B....

Karen's voice is absolutely stunning. Her warm alto is so soothing.

  40. A.... S....

karen la voz mas hermosa que escuche por eso es mi cantante mas amada la preferida la mejor de todas que maravilla que la muerte de un cantante no impide seguir disfrutandola para siempre

  41. M.... R....

her voice sounds unreal in this song. so deep and beautiful.

  42. S.... K....

I love this song. It is so beautiful and Karen made it even more so! Richard is a wonderful arranger, composer, pianist, was there something that he couldn’t do? They made such a great duo. Miss her voice so much! I grew up listening to them and it never gets also. Wish Richard would do something today.

  43. t.... s....

I was 10 years old when I got this album in 1970. Upon first hearing "Crescent Noon" it was impossible for me not to cry from the physiology of "musical emotion" at 2:47 on the word "heard" in this song. The vocals/melody actually give me tingles, lift me out of my chair and render me speechless. The Carpenters were literally the epitome of melody and musical ecstasy.

  44. Z.... T....

Probably my favorite of theirs. "EVE" is awesome as well.

  45. B.... m....

Beautiful song ...Beautiful lady RIP Karen we love you

  46. b.... ....

  47. R.... G....

This reminds me of a classical piece Erik Satie - Gymnopédie No.1, pretty sure this was the inspiration.

    R.... G....

Russell Gray I agree. I hear it too

  48. J.... B....

This song touched me deeply and still does. You can feel Karen's soul is into singing this song. God bless Karen and thank you for giving this lasting memory of your beautiful voice.

  49. S.... K....

My very favorite of theirs. I could listen to this just over and over. She had such a beautiful voice. Miss hearing them together, and only wish that she hadn’t died like she did.

  50. l.... ....

    Slowly we'll fade into
    A sea of midnight blue..
Haunting eerie pace . Love this song in Autumn .

  51. l.... c....

Best female vocalist ever;  however this song is never mentioned as a Carpenters great hit.  I'm not surprised. Most people never heard of Ray Manzarek.

  52. K.... G....

Hauntingly Smooth And Silky from the best female voice there ever was-FANTASTIC!

  53. L.... L....

For an Alto female, it is so lovely to hear this register as Diana de Leon indicates. Perfect perspective. It's sexy and rich.

  54. L.... L....

all time favorite song ever.......ever.......all our seasons, all our green Septembers......slowly we will fall in tune......Crescent Noon. Stunning

  55. D.... S....

One of my favs of all times, too.  Just stunning.

  56. K.... ....

    ...Somewhere in
    A fairytale forest lies one
Answer that is waiting to be heard...

  57. l.... c....

Wow. Don't play this at my funeral because I'll instantly have plenty of company.

  58. R.... S....

Wow, there will never be another voice like Karen's and this is one my favorite songs of hers.

  59. p.... ....

The most beautiful and best Carpenters song ever recorded...

  60. J.... D....

Along with 'Someday', this is goose bump time...

  61. E.... ....

    Correction:
    Morning breaks and
No one sees the quiet mountain birth

  62. G.... K....

    Oh that voice melts me...

  63. C.... H....

The first time i heared karen carpenter i just knew she was it noone would ever sing like this ever again she was the greatest female voice in vocalist history and i never hesitate when i say that

    C.... H....

I always say it too. No one comes close

  64. G.... L....

    Wow. Just wow.

  65. G.... G....

This is the best Carpenters song to me

  66. D.... ....

It evokes so much Erik Satie's Gymnopédie, as if his beautiful, mysterious piece had lyrics added.

  67. G.... M....

It's so haunting. It's so fall and so winter. Only Karen's voice could pull it off so well.

  68. S.... S....

Beyond perfect song. That voice, the meandering pace, the hesitancy of the piano, the build and swell of the chorus. And i'm calm and tingly at the end, and press repeat....repeat...repeat...

  69. r.... b....

    a wonderful lady voice .

  70. G.... G....

This song help me get complete NAVY boot camp Oct 1971-DEC 1971 this was one of the Albums my boot camp company had

  71. A.... S....

Arguably one of the most beautiful female voices in musical history.

  72. R.... S....

Happy you did this cut. Much richer than the choir version. And proof of what most of Karen's admirers believe of her talent.

  73. A.... V....

When I feel suicidal, I always listen to this song. It numbs the pain.

    A.... V....

    That dog needs you!

    A.... V....

Thank you. Yes, she does. :-)

    A.... V....

Hope you're better now...Life is so, so much worth living. Got plenty of downs but without 'em you won't have the ups :)

    A.... V....

@Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band some never have ups...... it's a beautiful tragedy.

    J Cohen
Nope. I don't care who told you what, it's birth not bird.
I've just listened to it closely. Karen had excellent diction and pronounced every consonant and she does not put a D on the end of the word.
Anyway, the lyrics make sense if you visualise the rising sun making a mountain become visible in the new day. It is being birthed.

  77. N.... R....

Anybody come here from j cole beat video?

    N.... R....

No. We came here for Karen & Richard.

  78. b.... ....

I had road rage one day and Karen's voice stopped it in its tracks. It seemed that I couldn't listen to Karen Carpenter sing and be angry at the same time.

    b.... ....

    bigvan24 aye ~ she’s an angel.

  79. w.... w....

Karen Carpenter ~ Heart, Mind, Soul, Body, Thought, Memory, and Wave!

  80. G.... C....

The rabbit hole of good music goes deeper and deeper

    G.... C....

not recently. Good music is lying dormant for the past 20 years.

  81. J.... D....

thank you Richard Carpenter. What a gift to the world.

    J.... D....

you're right. richard is the one behind those beautiful songs

    J.... D....

So correct...he knew how to exploit Karen's exquisite voice. He was nothing short of a "genius" arranging modern "pop" songs. Did Karen miss him on her solo venture? You tell me...

    J.... D....

Jim Davies no thank you karen if you knew about that family at all you would not be praising him respecting him yes but not praising shes the reason all those records sold not him

    J.... D....

@Cimarron Hopper....You are being terribly unfair about him. Just listen to her solo album to find out what she sounded like without Richard's talent and insight into what worked and what didn't. Remember that Phil Ramone, who produced her solo album, was a top notch producer who worked with many talented vocalists, including Frank Sinatra. As good as he was, he didn't know how to make that splendid voice of hers shine. But Richard did.

    J.... D....

    @mysterytrain3
Richard had completely mastered the art and craft of musical arranging before he was 21.
A rare talent, unrecognised by most fans.

  82. R.... F....

    Exceptional ...! Video was very well done..excellent song...crystal clarity ..Yea....this was great..🎼🎹🎶🎶🎤‼️

  83. M.... N....

Thank you Ned Nickerson-----Pure beauty in voice and images.

  84. L.... ....

Anybody else notice this is tuned down 1/4 step? Yes...1/4.

I found this out when I was picking out the piano chords using an electric piano that sounded out of tune. I digitally tuned it down exactly 50% between notes and it's right on. I'm sure they did this on purpose, but I wonder if it was to give it kind of a bit of extra "gloom"...

...that or maybe they tuned it up 1/4 step. To me it's easier to play tuned down and seems to match the other songs Richard arranged/wrote in that key.

    L.... ....

I dont have perfect pitch,so this sounds naturally beautiful.I wonder how someone who has perfect pitch feels when he or she listens to this song?

    L.... ....

    To me, gloom is beautiful.

    L.... ....

Then they could appreciate this brilliant piece more than most. Karen had the gift of perfect pitch, as few ever had.

  85. c.... ....

This is such a beautiful song. I still miss Karen Carpenter.

  86. s.... ....

    Brilliant!

  87. h.... ....

    My Favorite!

  88. g.... ....

    Profound, beautiful, peaceful

  89. B.... P....

    Note to self ............ 2:26

  90. F.... H....

    A marvel...

  91. e.... m....

I can barely listen to this. it's like she just left again. it hurts too much. please , however you look or think you look don't do what she did, please.

    e.... m....

I totally agree.. Karen is just an angel... Maybe one day we will all get to hear from her once again..... Such a very haunting voice..... I don't think I will ever hear a voice like this for as long as I live... So innocent, yet so wise.....

    Miss you Karen!

  92. g.... ....

A vocal work of art. Simply in a class by herself.

  93. A.... P....

    Agreed.

  94. b.... ....

This is perhaps a minor work in the Carpenters oeuvre -- but I have always loved it, for reasons which are probably obvious to anyone who stops to listen.. ;-)

(Nice video, too... beautiful stuff. Thanks, Ned.)

  95. D.... F....

    This song is unbelievable.

  96. P.... W....

As winter sets in, I always think of this song. Beautiful..

  97. M.... H....

Now that it is once again September, I can listen to this song with Karen's voice complementing the seasonal changes.

  98. d.... r....

    Such a sullen voice .

  99. f.... ....

Love, love, love this.  Carpenters had album tracks I loved including "Road Ode", "Desperado", "Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing", and this beautiful song.  So fresh and beautiful use of the vocal layering Richard became the master of in the studio. Another wonderful presentation by Ned Nickerson, thank you.
