Carpenter, Mary Chapin - The Calling Lyrics

Deep in your blood or a voice in your head
On a dark lonesome highway
It finds you instead
So certain it knows you, you can't turn away
Something or someone has found you today

Genius or Jesus, maybe he's seen us
But who would believe us
I can't really say
Whatever the calling, the stumbling or falling
You follow it knowing
There's no other way, there's no other way

There are zealots and preachers
And readers of dreams
The righteous yell loudest
And the saved rise to sing
The lonely and lost are just waiting to hear
Any moment their purpose
Will be perfectly clear

And then life would mean more
Than their name on their door
And that far distant shore that's so near
They'd hear the calling
And stumbling and falling
They'd follow it knowing
There's nothing to fear
Nothing to fear

I don't remember a voice
On a dark, lonesome road
When I started this journey so long ago
I was only just trying to outrun the noise
There was never a question of having a choice

Jesus or genie, maybe they've seen me
But who would believe me
I can't really say
Whatever the calling, the stumbling and falling
I followed it knowing there's no other way

Jesus or genie, maybe he's seen me
But who would believe me
I can't really say
Whatever the calling, stumbling and falling
I got through it knowing there's no other way
There's no other way

My friend of 40 years sent this to me on my graduation day, as I was getting to school, we live 1500 miles apart, but that day her spirit and presence were with me. Made me smile and feel my true friend did come.

February 12, 2017 - Acadia Nat'l Park - Snowbound In blizzard. This is my first time hearing this astonishing song as far as I know. I'm wondering where it came from and when. Thank you Mary. May God bless, guide and protect you all the day of your beautiful life. I love you. Peace

  8. D.... J....

I have loved Mary-Cjhapin Carpenter since 1989! Never a bad CD!

  9. E.... B....

Troubadours or Mariachis, freelance writers-storytellers, all inventors- anyone who for a 'buck' or our, 'Muses' walk a separate road. I would like to think this singer- sings for you... and Myself as well- too...

  10. E.... B....

Who do You hear? (the Media, Yourself, or... just a voice in your ear?) I am gripped with the same shackles. (genre, kid's stuff, adult, or something else...?) How many ways to get the 'Point' across to You?... (how many tools to fix the old till it is New?)

  11. A.... I....

    I fear God

  12. p.... N....

    i like your voice

Chapin is a gem. Have seen her live listened to her CD's. She is something special.

+tobradovic you bet she's special ! I've been a huge fan since I heard "Quittin Time" . I had my country station on and was half- listening. She was doing a interview at the local Radio station; and I heard her smokey voice and I think "Hmmm" then chapin plays "Quittin' Time" live... WHOA ! I hit my brakes, astounded by what I'm hearing...I think "WoW, where's chick BEEN all this time ? I gotta check her out !" Her music and lyrics sound so...intelligent...compared to what I was hearing on regular country stations. Chapin graduated from Brown University and you HAVE to be really smart ( as Chapin continues to show on each and very album she releases) to go to Brown. Shortly after I heard her I went and bought " Shooting Straight in the Dark" and "State of the Heart" I have all her CD's. Chain has given me the courage to chase my own dream of becoming a singer-songwriter. I recently purchase my first acoustic guitar. If luck should have that we ever meet; I would be ecstatic and die a happy woman. Chapin is the BEST.
