Thanksgiving was and is a religious centered holiday just as George Washington said when they proclaimed it a national holiday.  People tend to forget this and it is time for a reminder.

Thanksgiving Proclamation

Separation of church and state was established as a separate entity from the constitution by Thomas Jefferson due to a certain group of christians that feared persecution from the government. It was meant to protect the CHURCH FROM THE STATE & NOT the other way around.

Tre Gibbs thank you! I'm am grateful that I can believe as I wish, but religious people keep insisting that their views are the only way. I believe in separation of church and state. It protects everyone. I wonder how Christians would feel if a Muslim told them they would have to believe in Allah or else! Well, that's how we feel when religion is thrust on us. I am grateful that people who believe in reality are not beheaded in America!

I really think some folks ought to research the history of Thanksgiving. That proclamation by President George was designated for one year only. Thanksgiving disappeared off the American calendar for many decades. President Lincoln brought it back during the Civil War. Various presidents issued proclamations over the years; the holiday was hit-and-miss. Only until President Franklin Roosevelt set Thanksgiving on the 4th Thursday of November was the holiday firmly established. (Prior to that, it had been the last Thursday of November.)

My point is: the George Washington proclamation of 1789 is virtually meaningless (except for historical purposes) because there have been so many subsequent proclamations.

It's a pretty song with a nice sentiment. The video is really well done and captures the mood of the song. But you can really tell beanscot favors a religious centered Thanksgiving. I wonder how most Americans feel about that?

personally..... in my life- that's what Thanksgiving is for and originally intended for..... thanking God for the many blessings we have

it is a 'spirit' of thankfulness and for me it is more about an agragarian life that no longer exists. most celebrations are part nostalgia, part myth, part spirit, part heritage along an accepted storyline. that does not remove accessibility from those who are from a different aspect, it includes them. thanksgiving is a primarily white european immigrant agragarian religious celebration in its roots. this video displays that beautifully.

If God doesn't exist exactly who or what are you thanking? If life is just a random interaction of atoms and molecules then thanksgiving is utterly pointless by definition. I'm not inclined to thank a sun that is indifferent to my existence for turning hydrogen into helium and quite accidentally keeping me warm.

Seems to me you can have it one way or the other, but not both. I am perfectly comfortable thanking God myself, since you were kind enough to ask. :)

@Mark Meed  Keep in mind it is possible to be thankful without being Christian. There are lots of other religions where one believes in one or more deities, spirits, ancestors, somebody.
