Carpenter, Mary Chapin - On With The Song Lyrics

This isn't for the ones who blindly follow
Jingoistic bumper stickers tellin' you
To love it or leave it and you'd better love Jesus
And get out of the way of the Red, White, and Blue

This isn't for the ones who buy their six-packs
At the 7-Eleven where the clerk makes change
Whose accent makes clear (he) sure ain't from here
They call him a camel jockey instead of his name

[Chorus:]
No, this is for the ones who stand their ground
When the lines in the sand get deeper
When the whole world seems to be upside down
And (the) shots bein' taken get cheaper, cheaper

This isn't for the ones who would gladly swallow
Everything their leader would have them know
Bowing and kissin' while the truth goes missin'
"Bring it on," he crows, puttin' on his big show

This isn't for the man who can't count the bodies
Can't comfort the families, can't say when he's wrong
Playin' "I'm the decider," like some sort of Messiah
While another day passes and a hundred souls gone

[Chorus]

This is for the ones that I see above me
Three little stars in a great big sky
Light for the world and hope for the weary
They try

This isn't for the ones with their radio signal
Callin' for bonfires and boycotts, they rave
Exhorting their listeners to spit on the sinners
While countin' the bucks of advertising, they'll say

[Tag Chorus:]
This isn't for you and you know who you are
Just do what you want 'cause I know that you can
But I gotta be true to myself and to you
So on with the song, I don't give a damn

Carpenter, Mary Chapin On With The Song Comments
  1. M.... M....

I just shared this on my Facebook, the majority of my friends are of mixed opinions about Trump, but while this song was written over a decade ago, it might as well have been written yesterday as Trump trys to act like he is above the law, and above accountability. After he is not longer in the Whitehouse I think his businesses will not be able to support the lifestyle he pretends to be able to afford now. He is a fake and a snake-oil salesman, and for now he is raking it in, but all fairytales come to an end, I hope this one ends soon.

  2. G.... S....

This song just keeps getting more and more relevant in an age where partisan tribalism is separating us and setting up way too many Americans to chase after whatever charismatic person happens to be on top at the moment.

  3. E.... F....

When we talk about this country's poet laureates - how is she not included?

  4. C.... K....

This song is perfect for the time we're living in. Way too fitting for being over a decade old.

  5. D.... W....

My hero - a great songwriter that has been relevant for 25 years. This isn't the one for ..... Listen and understand.

  6. R.... D....

In the aftermath of Trump's election, this song seems more powerful than ever.
    Thanks, MCC.

  7. J.... B....

Dixie Chicks don't know how right they were !

    J.... B....

And yet, does he look so bad now? God help us all!

  8. J.... B....

Not as obscure as you may think!

  9. S.... X....

This is a well written and very thoughtful song. The "three little stars in the great big sky" refers to the Dixie Chicks. Too bad songs like these remain so obscure.

  10. A.... C....

She couldn't write a bad song if she tried, Nice try doug drury but you have failed. Please stop watching faux news. Thanks :)

Even though Mary had her sights set on George W. when she wrote this, verses three and four describe our current mess of a President even more eloquently.
"This isn't for the ones who would gladly swallow everything their leader would have them know (Obamacare, just for starters),Bowing and kissing(Muslim leaders) while the truth goes missing,(Fast and Furious, Benghazi, Solyndra, et.al.) bring it on he crows, putting on his big show (almost daily press conferences to satisfy his ego)

This isn't for the man who can't count the bodies (all of the above), can't comfort the families, can't say when he's wrong, Claiming I'm the decider, like some sort of Messiah, while another day passes and a hundred souls gone."

I love Mary and her songs, but the irony in these lyrics is too good to pass up.

If you believe what you just typed, you are not a Chapin fan. She would disagree with everything you said. Thank god for us bleeding heart liberals.

    D.... D....

Sadly it applies to BOTH Presidents.  Maybe that was her point...it's not just Bush it's ALL of them...

    D.... D....

In the 9 (NINE!!) years since this song (and album) came out in 2007, I had essentially forgotten this gem of insight. As powerful and incisive as this song was in 2007,....wow, it's equally (maybe even more) compelling now (Sept 2016) during the runup to the Nov 2016 US Presidential Election. Mary, my my my,...how prescient you were. MCC, the Visionary. I guess the more things change, the more they stay the same,...or get even worse.

    D.... D....

On with the song is written before Obama.

    D.... D....

And, on with the song. As things have gotten even worse. Did your vote help?

  12. s.... ....

Amy Goodman brought me here. XOXO!

  13. a.... k....

    WONDERFUL!

  15. M.... G....

This song is dedicated to The Dixie Chicks on the liner notes to the album The Calling. Chapin is my hero.

Thank you to the Steve Earles and Mary Chapin Carpenters of this world.
