Carnes, Kim - Divided Hearts Lyrics

You're looking through your window
Into the neon light
You try to forget him
But the feeling keeps you up all night
Flashback, flashback, flashback
Only come from an abstract mind

I look back
I see you in your frame
I only wish I could climb through
But the wall around it stops me all the same
Flashback, flashback
Only come from an abstract mind

(One divided heart)
Divided hearts
(Two divided hearts)
Why do they break
We watch them fall to pieces on the ground

(One divided heart)
Divided hearts
(Two divided hearts)
Why do they break
And we are left with our divided hearts, oh

A standing conversation
Down at the Pink Café
You tellin' me you got reason
But I just can't hear a single word you say
Flashback, flashback
Only color the abstract mind

(One divided heart)
Divided hearts
(Two divided hearts)
Why do they break
We watch them fall to pieces on the ground

(One divided heart)
Divided hearts
(Two divided hearts)
The chance we take
And we are left with our divided hearts, oh

(One divided heart)
Divided hearts
(Two divided hearts)
Why do they break
And we are left
With our divided hearts

(One divided heart) oh, oh
(Two divided hearts)
And we are left
With our divided hearts
Our divided hearts

(One divided heart)
Divided hearts
(Two divided hearts)
Why do they break
And we are left
With our divided hearts

(One divided heart)
(Two divided hearts)

Great song that deserved to do a lot better than it did. In fact it sounds like something that Sheena Easton, Anne Murray, Jennifer Rush, Kenny Rogers or Joan Armatrading would sing!

And by this point in time (1986) none of those artists would chart in the Top 40 ever again except Sheena Easton (and Rush in a duet with Elton John). As much as I like this song--which is a great deal (and the whole album for that matter)--it does not scream Top 40, c. 1986. I could see it charting AC perhaps at that time, but it does not surprise me that it failed to hit big on the Hot 100. Also, it's a little bit soft/unassuming in terms of a lead single. "Crazy in the Night" from the year before was a very smart choice for a lead single from the prior album, as it was immediately memorable--very much an attention grabber. BTW, I think the strongest song on this album is the last--"That's Where the Trouble Lies." It's smoky, sultry and tells a great story. One of my favorite Carnes tracks from her entire career..

Not a bad track, The chart position is a total insult though. It kinda beggars belief that after the success of Bette Davis Eyes spending 9 weeks @ No.1 US chart really putting Kim on the map that everything that came after didn`t really chart and I mean the songs were good, the production was amazing & Kim herself obviously put so much into everything. I think that the success of Bette Davis Eyes backfired on her because it was such a huge blockbuster hit with Kim's gravel voice putting her own unique stamp on it becoming the best selling single worldwide 1981 that she became trapped in the bubble of Bette Dais Eyes and couldn`t exist outside it. Its a pity because her voice was just utterly astonishing with tailor-made songs and production to complement it. 79 chart position is terrible cause this is a terrific infectious track that deserved to go top 20 at least.

This song takes me back to a time, at least in my life, where there wasn't a care in the world. I truly wish I could go back in time and relive the 80's.

  9. Bruce Griffin

Could someone please tell me why this wasn't at least a TOP-TEN Hit! It's the only Kim Carnes song I actually bothered listening to. Great melody, nice beat...I'd give it a "95"! Geez.
