Carly Simon - Reunions Lyrics

First one in the city
Wearin' all those grass stained jeans
Nothing is forgotten, everyone is pleased.
Someone got his hair cut
The girls have lots to say
His friends had felt more comfortable
With it worn the other way
And I don't know if I'll see you again.

Next one at the old house
Snow is on the ground
Photographs and wine are passed around
Someone toasts an absent friend
Another takes his seat
They gather round the dying fire
But the circle's not complete
And I don't know if I'll see you again

Last one by the highway
Wind blows through thin smiles
Someone made a wrong turn
Missed a joke by miles
Someone got their hair cut
A tear in her eye
But no one even comments -
Except to say 'goodbye'
And I don't know if I'll see you again.

Carly Simon Reunions Comments

I'd forgotten about this until recently, but how right it was, and how poignant, to have either recalled or rediscovered it when I did - at a burial in small old cemetery. A 98 year old man I'd known much of my life, a charter member of the fire department I belong to; family names and stones going back to before this was country, people as old as I, and older, people I went to grade school with, worked with, went to church with... who were only home to bury a neighbor, uncle...some of an age that it could easily be true: "I don't know if I'll see you again"; many I probably won't, when they have gone back to Niagara, or Ohio or Virginia...Damn, this song breaks my heart these days.

I heard this was Carly's mom's favorite song. I can see why. This is a beautiful song!

Beautiful, evocative, and as pictorial as viewing old family photos. Incredible!

*_Reunions_* from Carly's first album is amazing! As I listen to the story she is telling I'm seeing perfectly everything that is going on, like I'm right there with all of these people. I know them.

+Robert Brittenham I feel the same! :D Believe it or not, I'll be 57 yrs young in a month & during the course of my life, I haven't found too many loyal Carly fans......their loss!

This album and this song has always been a favorite of mine, as well.   I listen to it now 45 years later and its meaning is now of a respect (and melancholy reflection) for those days passed when I first played it .
