Carly Simon - Laura Lyrics

Lead-in with Haunting:
There's always someone, haunting someone, haunting someone,
I can't sleep easy, cause I'm afraid of dreaming
And then the memory of the dream
There's always someone, haunting someone, haunting someone

Laura is the face in the misty night
Footsteps that you hear down the hall
The laugh that floats on a summer's night
That you might never quite recall
And you see Laura on a train that is passing through
Those eyes how familiar they seem
She gave your very first kiss to you
That was Laura but she's only a dream

She gave your very first kiss to you
That was Laura
But she's only a dream

Yes she gave your very first kiss to you
That was Laura, but she's only a dream
A dream, a dream

The most exquisite love song of the twentieth century delivered  by the goddess of romantic ballads. I love the detail in the arrangement, clothes and photography. You can tell the artists are themselves enchanted when they deliver a performance like this.I hope god lets me hear this one for all eternity.

The film, and this somg will haunt you. Both are capable of owning your imagination. I watched the film for the first time just recently. Filmed 70 years ago? Sixty? Fifty? Escapes codifying. Laura. Watch it at your own risk. You will be inexplicably haunted. Guaranteed!

Me too - but they can't - all about the money and returns - black and white movies have an aura about them and time was invested in the score.

  23. F.... G....

    Wonderful only

  24. l.... S....

Watched the movie. Loved it. The score was beautiful. Wished they still made moves like that, 40's style:)

  25. E.... A....

    so beautifull

  26. A.... W....

This sounds to me that it was arranged by Nelson Riddle while he was a ghostwriter for Gordon Jenkins. I´ll appreciate any info about matter.

How cool is this! My favorite song, from my favorite movie, sang my one of my favorite singers.

  30. F.... A....

  31. R.... D....

Beautiful song sung by an even more beautiful woman!

  32. w.... d....

I was so hot for Dana Andrews.  Swoon.

  33. L.... D....

I was named after her. Born in 58' didnt get my dad's blue eyes.....finally know what i was..hped to look like..lol!

    L.... D....

    Me also..

  34. n.... ....

They didn't cut any corners with this arrangement, that's for sure. It's unusual now to hear what an orchestra can do with a song.

  35. D.... E....

I think Laura is one of the most beautiful names for girls(women) it just sounds pretty.

  36. J.... D....

Only Sinatra delivers as meant on this song but nice job Carly...have always enjoyed her singing.

  37. A.... A....

    Beautiful

  38. s.... ....

I love this! She is a songstress of the first order! Made this Classic all her own!

  39. G.... B....

i love her version of this song

  40. C.... S....

    Amazing!

  41. V.... ....

Thank you for the info on the artist, I love this movie and love the song. Jackie Gleason and his orchestra does a great job of recording this instrumental. Thanks for your comments.

  42. L.... F....

That is my name Laura my mother called me that . She only called me that cause she didn't have a girl name.

  43. A.... S....

    wow what a song~

  44. G.... D....

My take on it is that David Raskin wrote the instrumental song for the 1944 film, Laura, and that in the following year Johnny Mercer put lyrics to the music. The lyrics are based on the character Laura from the film.

  45. m.... j....

    Que voz......

  46. J.... B....

    Thanks! Super track, Carly.

  47. S.... S....

No, I don't like it, and I never heard it before.

  48. D.... G....

    Gene.

It's ironic. The actress playing Laura in the film has a (usually) manly name, while the actor playing the protagonist of the film has a (usually) feminine name, Dana.

  49. D.... W....

I need some help here. When Johnny Merecer wrote the lyrics for "laura", was he writing about a ficticious person, or a real person? This has bothered me for sometime now.Any inside information on this matter would greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

  50. J.... B....

    Amen my brother.

  51. p.... P....

When will we see the full movie on Utube?

  52. L.... L....

    Haha, :) If only.

  53. J.... B....

A Rose by any other name eh? :-)

  54. L.... L....

Its Laura-Rose really but Lola-Rose is a nickname..

  55. J.... B....

    Lola-Rose, what an interesting name.

  56. L.... L....

If I was I would surely die too, :L hahaha

  57. J.... B....

Are you as beautiful as Jean Tierney? Say yes and I shall surely die.

  58. L.... L....

Another song with my name in it..Wahoo! I seem to like every song with my name in it<3xx

  59. R.... F....

Always loved this piece. Well done!

  60. S.... C....

I am one of Carly's biggest fans dating back to 1972, and I love this version but it is not live, but lip synded. This PBS special was a documentary

  61. A.... M....

    Masterful. Simply masterful.

  62. D.... A....

Now this is a post you'd never find in today's pop music videos on youtube. hahaha Well done.

  63. D.... A....

She does a terrific job with this song.

  64. T.... ....

    Many thanks for posting

  65. b.... l....

I think David Raskin wrote the music in 1944 when the movie came out and Johnny Mercer (Days of Wine and Roses, Moon River etc etc) wrote the words several years later. I recently bought the movie on DVD and Gene Tierney, Dana Andrews, Clifton Webb, Vincent Price & Judith Anderson are all very good and Otto did a nice job of directing!

  66. S.... ....

My Mom's fav song. And one of mine......

  67. s.... ....

    gorgeous

  68. e.... ....

    What a fabulous performance.

  69. T.... C....

  73. F.... S....

    Love it.

  74. B.... R....

Sorry guys, you just need to appreciate her strength as it is.... you may not like it, and that´s OK....

  75. M.... c....

one of the worst recordings of this legendary classic that I've ever heard....wrong song for her chops by a mile...

  76. a.... s....

    wonderful ...ann

"I have landed upon a foreign shore, and burned my ships behind me. These letters were the last thing that held me in sympathy with any remnant or belonging of the old life. Henceforth that life and all that appertains to it are as dead to me and as far removed from me as if I were become a denizen of another world." --- LAURA (Mark Twain, "The Gilded Age")

  78. D.... B....

@chapelhilldame I think she's done at least 4 albums of songs from roughly this time period. The only one I have (for sure) is her "Moonlight Serenade" album. Working on tracking down the older albums in this style.

  79. C.... ....

Sorry, she doesn't have the "velvet" sounding quality to pull this song or any soft ballad off. Her voice is too hoarse in a pop/rock way. It's painful to hear her try and hold some of the higher notes.

  80. W.... P....

    sensitive.

  81. l.... ....

    Qué maravilla!
Es un tema precioso y me sublime como lo interpreta C. Simon...

  82. B.... ....

I was just watching this concert tonight. Can you upload Carly's version of YOU WON'T FORGET ME.... It is sensational! Thanks for this one! Her voice is stunning!

  83. D.... ....

The Four Freshmen's version is roughly 10,000 times better.

  84. C.... M....

    A Classic by a A Classic

  85. H.... ....

@BernardProfitendieu Gene did not need to practice was smoking, sadly Gene started smokiing very early on in her career in an effort to deepen the the tone of her voice, it was eventually to bring about her death from Emphysema. By the time Gene made the movie Laura Gene had been smoking quite a number of years. Though I agree it does come across as a little strained and awkward looking, however, though Gene was known as 'one take Tierney, there were many retakes by La Shalle, photo/lighting.

  86. A.... ....

Is it true that Carly Simon is Mick Jagger in drag?

  87. T.... B....

is she a he or a she im not quite sure sorry lol shes got low vioce(like a man)

  88. J.... H....

I love this song, so I was sampling some of the renditions and to my surprise (Not sure why) Carly's was the best. Her voice is haunting and ethereal just like the movie.

  89. M.... R....

    Utterly beautiful. Ravishing.

  90. m.... ....

    @jlmww
I do remember her saying something about the stage fright thing. She is awesome.

  91. W.... W....

    @mjazzguitar
A couple of weeks ago, I was watching Season 1 of Saturday Night Live, and Carly Simon was the only musical guest who didn't appear live. Instead, she filmed them ahead of time. They said it was because she wanted to watch herself on the show, but if you're right about the stage fright, that could explain it.

Either way, it was a great performance. She always gives great performances.

  92. m.... ....

I heard that it originally had no lyrics. But people loved it so much they came up with some.
I can't believe she has stage fright, she is such a class act.
I remember the guy she was married to saying in Rolling Stone that to other guys she's just a f--k. jealous dude.

  93. m.... ....

I heard that it originally had no lyrics. But people loved it so much they came up with some.

  94. a.... ....

this is spectacular. I love this song , this arrangement and Carly's singing. Stunning.

  95. T.... C....

    That does it! CARLY...run off with me to Paris and leave that a22hole from North Carolina....{wink}

  96. M.... ....

Such a hauntingly beautiful song, and to think we heard it as kids performed by the Spike Jones Orchestra in a spoof.

  97. J.... B....

WHO IS THIS GYPSY SINGER ????

  98. J.... B....
