Captain Beefheart & The Magic Band - Zig Zag Wanderer Lyrics

Zig zag

Zig zag wanderer
Zig zag wanderer
Zig zag wanderer
Zig zag wanderer

You can huff, you can puff
You'll never blow my house down
You can zig, you can zag
Whoa, I'm gonna stay, gonna stay around
Gonna stay around

You can jump, you can holler
Never lose what I found
Heaven's free 'cept for a dollar

You can zig, you can zag
Whoa I'm gonna stay, gonna stay around
Gonna stay around

The zig zag wanderer had a zigzag child
Zig zag traveller for the mercy mile
Found his wheels and nature scene
Quenched his thirst, way it never been

Zig zag wanderer
Zig zag wanderer

You can dance, you can prance
Freeze those timbers, drop some beams
Hide my shield, throw away my lance

Zig zag child, mercy mile
Zig zag dream, zig zag dream

Zig zag

  3. B.... H....

Iggy and the stogges got there sound from this song.

    B.... H....

Brad Hahn its got self titled and funhouse vibe to it in a way. I guess i hear it a little.
Its got the 1st album tone and funhouse intensity in the vocals at times.
I always thought that beefheart needed to perform with the likes of Mike Bloomfield and all he had going on.

  4. K.... ....

    Zhhhhig Zhhhhag...

  5. s.... ....

the beginning of this song is boss

  6. B.... Q....

As groundbreaking as the Beatles. But, obviously a much smaller songbook.

  7. T.... ....

Up there with The Velvets and Nico as the album of the 60s, and therefore probably all time.

  8. M.... K....

    🔥🔥🔥

  9. R.... J....

    Love it

  10. A.... G....

Love to see all the people coming here from Rogan. This has been a favorite of mine since I was in high school in the early 2000s, but needless to say it’s unknown to most people, even those who are serious about music. The first few heavy blues tracks on it? Abba Zabba? Fuckin’ incredible stuff.

  11. s.... w....

    my fav beefheart choon!

  12. M.... ....

iv said it before, and ill say it again, this is phenomenal, (rip captain) and what poses as " Good" music today is absolutely fraudulent

    M.... ....

    Agreed....

  13. A.... Z....

Gonna Play this out of 1968 Dodge Dart.. it's feels like my Car makes me feel.. pure time capsule..

    A.... Z....

How much did Hyundai have to pay for this for their TV commercial?

  16. G.... C....

I bought this album when it was first released in UK. Hyundai use this track to advertise one of their cars. Great music from the Magic Band that sounds as good today as it did then. Timeless!

  17. T.... ....

    Aw man - what a tune! 1967!!

  18. .... ....

первый раз когда этот альбом послушал (хули, безопасно как молоко) был под кислотой. это было ахуенно!!!!

  21. g.... w....

POP SONG OF THE AGES ....If you can't dance to this ... go home baby !

  22. O.... S....

If I was in a deserted island I would take the complete works of J.S.Bach, A.Webern and Trout Mask Replica by Captain Beefheart. I need nothing else than the divine music of bach, the minimalism of webern and the craziness of captain beefheart. You?

  23. V.... B....

I just ran out of Zig Zags and had to play this.

  24. N.... C....

Like to think there’s at least one alternate dimension where I was alive in the late 60s early 70s and roadtrippin around the USA with this album on heavy rotation

  25. A.... D....

this shit slaps. can’t help but move along with it lol

  26. R.... T....

This song is a not-very-good taqueria outside Joshua Tree but somehow it works.

    Thanks, JQ!

The latest delusion I have is that Captain Beefheart communicates with me from the underworld (he is dead) through his moustache. and that explains why I had an episode while hearing his song "hair pie", with my head changing size & shape. he was sending a message to me telepathically.
    funny delusion..

    O.... S....

    Stay strong brotha

    O.... S....

  38. 6.... S....

    Bad Ass man!

  39. J.... S....

I always thought that this song should have been playing during the "climax" of the film FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS (1998) instead of "Jumpin' Jack Flash."

    J.... S....

OMG so true...foshow.JJF is a weak stones song any way...toooo played out.

    J.... S....

    You nailed it!!!!!

    J.... S....

    @Invisible Boy Only their best...

    J.... S....

captain beefheart should have been the entire soundtrack to that film. any song.

  40. v.... w....

just feel alive ... and feel

    g.... ....

    J.... B....

    God will punish those bitches

  56. c.... ....

Riot on Sunset Strip. RIP Michael Evans. Nick?

  57. T.... ....

Guys guys guys! I'm very curious as to how the guitarist achieves this 'pointy-crunchy-delicate' guitar sound!!  especially heard when he plays on his D-string

    T.... ....

Judging by the sound of it, it might very well be an early solid state amplifier. These were relatively commonly used in mid to late 60ies records, probably because they were new, and people were experimenting with them. (CCR, The Doors etc, used them) so it is not unlikely that the magic band did too
The guitar sound on this song (tinny, clean with a slight but harsh crunch on top) is very reminiscent of the Velvet Underground records, and I am quite certain that they used SS amps, so...

Also: a cleanish guitar without any compression in a busy mix will often sound like this, because the mix wil drown out the bass frequencies, so what remains is upper midrange and treble, which makes it sound the way it does :)

    T.... ....

I can get much the same effect with a Vox AC 30 on a Squire pro-tone Strat. The Vox gives a lot of gain for that tinny fuzzy sound so makes for a good combination.

    T.... ....

@Bram Claes Phunny I should just happen to see a comment re: solid state amps, cos I'm starting to notice many of them can get a really rude, raw sound that I dig...My Crate and Marshall MG practice amps are killer! And I have many tube amps.
Someone tell me what these chords are? This song is harder to play than it sounds! o-O

    T.... ....

@Bram Claes I think the Underground used something like Sunsceptre cabs.

    T.... ....

I get a pretty close match playing my SG at the bridge pickup, coil tap on, and running it through a solid state Orange with bass at 5, mids at 5, and treble at 10. And also picking closer to the neck. Also I tested what +scurvy scott said and that works too with the same setup. It'd also be worth mentioning that I'm running through a fuzz pedal on the boost setting, but that's just for some extra gain.

  58. S.... K....

    1:39+ = love it !

  59. L.... G....

    ZIG-ZAG Medveščak ya all!

  60. A.... T....

    LOVELOVELOVE

  61. C.... ....

I've come to the conclusion that popularity is completely unrelated to talent. there are too many shitty popular bands, and brilliant underground bands, and vice versa, to give any rhyme or reason to the notion of album sales correlation. but taste is friggin stupid anyway. who gives a shit

    C.... ....

    You're Damn RIGHT !!

  62. M.... B....

    So that was YOU!

  63. M.... M....

    bass in your face...

  64. E.... J....

  67. t.... ....

    1:40 Dat Bass!

  68. S.... ....

One expert opinion, such as music journalist Lester Bangs', is worth millions of ignorant opinions. Yours rests firmly in the latter.

Good artists know this rule well: There is a direct relationship bet/ how many people love your work, and how original/brilliant is it, e.g., if everybody and your grandma loves it, it's watered down, cliche, shit = BEATLES.

  69. S.... ....

Your appeal to the masses, "arguing with near enough everybody else about the importance of the Beatles," is a complete rational fallacy, and precisely why your opinion is null. Everyone seems to like Gaga, too...does NOT infer quality.
Oh, and please don't fancy yourself a writer or bother with the craft, as this line, "You are a whinging, aspergers ridden..." sounds like the poor attempts of a freshman writer. Enjoy high school, and I promise, one day you will get laid...if you pay for it.

  70. S.... ....

It takes a special kind of arrogance and stupidty to come to a Captain Beefheart page, screaming in the defense of Beatles "genius" (which is a misappropration of the word), and call another person a "fandan." Not only are you unable to critically think, your self-awareness is pathetic. You're an ass, and fucking dumb. Any dipshit that uses caps like you did, deserves a verbal lashing. Now, go back to sleep...you have more value there.

  71. S.... ....

"Captain Beefheart is the most important musician to rise in the Sixties, far more significant and far-reaching than The Beatles, who only made pretty collages with material from the public domain, when you get right down to it; as important, as I said, for all music as Ornette Coleman was for jazz ten years ago and Charlie Parker 15 years before that, as important as Leadbelly was for the blues Cap teethed on..."
    --Lester Bangs (MUSIC JOURNALIST)

  72. S.... ....

The fact that you use all caps says enough about you. Enjoy stupidity.

  73. S.... ....

This is one great album...the instrumentals sound like Pink Floyd's Astronomy Domine though...

  74. I.... ....

Always a must, but make sure its vinyl ;)

  75. S.... ....

Actually, he hated the Beatles dumb ass, and the Stones. You must not know much about him.

  76. N.... B....

I hate comparing artists that have their own unique gift and use it. I do not see that their uniqueness can truly be compared for EACH has their own spark of Glorious-Self. Zappa, Lennon all have given us music from within their hearts may we enjoy each in their own special genre' these musicians were not copy cats but creators of Greatness. Thanks Angel BEing that always shares greats he knew growing up (me a sheep) kept from knowing these when they were Here on Earth Plain creating Gems. XO

  77. E.... ....

Not comparing them. Just making an observation.

  78. S.... ....

All i have to say to that is, Beatle Bones and Smoking Stones. Lennon was a fucking artistic light-weight next to Capt. Beefheart, and shouldn't be mentioned in the same conversation--ever.

  79. T.... C....

i love the theremin in the background

  80. L.... J....

I don't know why Trout Mask Replica is heralded as this bands best effort. Not to diss that record, but this is just in a different stratosphere to me. On vinyl it works brilliantly, the first and second half combining as one act of genius. This record will melt your world away, if only for awhile, and take you to some sort of dreamland. Cheers for uploading this gem!

  81. s.... ....
