So this incredibly difficult drum part is the real answer for those who want “more cowbell” I believe he literally stick his drum stick inside the bell and rattles it in time, brilliant,,,,,

It to me just sounds like a simple mixture of doubles and paradiddles , absolute pin point accuracy tho

I was sure this would be Captain Beefheart's break into commercial success. I gave each of my four brothers (older than me) a copy for Christmas in 1972, They all got rid of them.
I first heard the record when it was new and I was a senior in high school. I watched them perform most of this record at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago.
When I met Captain Beefheart in 1977 in Portland Oregon, we discussed the event. He claimed to remember where I sat but was wrong. He did remember that Zoot Horn Rollo cut his finger.
My personal theory is that the song is about a smile.
Low Yo-Yo Stuff (on the same album) is clearly about walking.

The drummer is Art Tripp who left Zappa for Beefheart and substituted for John French when Beefheart and Zappa were on the outs. It was Zappa who named Beefheart (Don van Vliet).

This record should have catapulted Beefheart into commercial success. He might have been undone by his conflicted contract obligations.

I recommend the biography by Mike Barnes (2000).

Captain Beefheart has been in my life since 1969.

I still have that album. Wasn't my favorite type of music at the time, but I certainly enjoyed (and still do) Beefheart's refreshing deviation from the norm. Never paid all that much attention to the lyrics, especially to try to derive a hidden meaning. Merely enjoyed the sounds. Not sure what Troll Gardener's problem is. Sounds like someone who should be sent away. There's always a troublemaker in the crowd with "Too Much Time on his Hands." Hey, Troll, maybe you like Styx?
