Captain Beefheart & The Magic Band - Safe As Milk Lyrics

Well my cigarette died when I washed my face
Dropped some drops in an ashtray hit a wrong place
Woman at my blinds to see spiders spinning lines
It's a safe as milk, it's a safe as milk
I never heard it put quite that way
The shape I'm in is a gone a way
They called a day, they called a day

Yesterday's paper headlines approach
Rain gutter teasing, rusty cat sneezing
Soppin wet hammer, dusty and wheezing
Lusty alley whining trashcan blues
Children running after rainbows stocking poor
Gracious ladies nylon hanging on to line
Jumping onto leg looking mighty fine

Sorrows lollipop lands stick-broken on a dark carnival ground
Pop up toaster cracklin
Aluminium rhythm and sound
Every day pencil lazy and sharp
The icebox inside looking like a harp
Electric bulb been out for years
Freezer fumes feed the gas tears
Cheese in the corner with a mile long beard
Bacon blue bread dog eared...

I may be hungry but I sure ain't weird

  15. C.... B....

It's like the Blues and Rock had an idiot savant wunderkind, but neither of them were the real Father, because they'd both secretly been doing it with Voodoo.

  16. A.... K....

This song is why ry cooder has been so revered over the last 50 years plus as one of america's all-time greatest guitarists.

    A.... K....

He is why I'm listening to this right now. I"m glad I did.

  17. T.... ....

If I owned a bar, I would play this song every night!

  19. P.... G....

Sure sounds much like the traditional Like the way Johnny Winter did that one

  20. S.... L....

I acknowledge Beefheart's creativity and skill, but really, his sound only came together for me when he had Ry Cooder backing him up.

    S.... L....

listen to "big eyed beans from venus" and say that

  21. M.... B....

Catchiest song of all time for me! Incredible music!

  22. A.... G....

  23. j.... w....

The above synopsis is incredible and really captures the essence of what is a true masterpiece and a portent of an incredible canon of ineffable work. There will never another Don Van Vliet.

  24. C.... S....

Shame he had no real success during his career, now the most memorable thing he’s known for is making a jumbled mess of a album.

In reply to davidrosenak, check out the New, New Minglewood Blues on the Grateful Dead's first LP, released the same year (1967) and gigged relentlessly during 1966, the same time the Rising Sons were recording 44 blues. Beefheart and Taj Mahal do better blues vocals than Bob Weir, but the Dead stick pretty closely to the lyrics to a traditional blues song, whereas Don van Beefheart takes - surprise, surprise - some poetic license!

  46. C.... a....

this is a pretty good cover of it

Anyone interested in "Safe As Milk" and in this track in particular should check out "44 Blues" by the Rising Sons, an LA band that featured a young Ry Cooder and Taj Mahal.  My understanding is that Beefheart recruited Cooder for the Magic Band after hearing him with the Rising Sons.  Well, compare the Sons' "44 Blues" (which came first) to "Sure 'Nuff 'N Yes I Do" and Cooder's very strong influence on Beefheart is strikingly clear.  It's not just the guitar (which Cooder played on both tracks) but the whole arrangement (and, for that matter, compare Taj Mahal's singing to Beefheart's).  I first heard "44 Blues" after listening to "Safe As Milk" for about 30 years and I was stunned by the similarity.

    d.... ....

    Thanks!

    d.... ....

@davidrosenak Both songs are based on Rollin' and Tumblin' by Hambone Willie Newbern first recorded in 1929 and made most famous perhaps by Muddy Waters. I Feel Like Ahcid from Strictly Personal is based on Son House's Death Letter Blues and Gimme Dat Harp Boy from the same album is based on Willie Dixon's Spoonful made famous by Howlin' Wolf. Some of the other songs have more original musical ideas but Don didn't truly break free from his influences and develop a completely original style until Trout Mask Replica and Lick My Decals Off, Baby.

    d.... ....

+Abel Ashes I like his quoting that little Son House line, "how do you reckon it read…"

    d.... ....

    Thanks brother !

    d.... ....

Hi. Just a small point. If I remember correctly, the Rising Sons album was never released back in the day. Obviously, it's available now (like everything is. lol), but it's doubtful Beefheart would have heard it, although Ry's influence is obvious and he might've had a copy of the unreleased record to play for Don. More likely, Don had the song and when Ry joined the band he adapted what he played on "44 Blues" and made it sound like the same song. Every Blues song sounds like another Blues with different lyrics anyway, right?

  48. R.... W....

The Dumbest comments on one of the masterpieces of 60's whatever genre. RIP' 'Capt'n Beefheart'? Don is Gone. Beefheart stays. Idiots!

Sure 'Nuff 'n Yes I Do - Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band [Glendale, California] - 1967 - "AMG Pick. The album is heavily influenced by the Delta blues, and this is apparent from the opening bars of the first track, "Sure 'Nuff 'n Yes I Do", which is based on the 'Rollin' and Tumblin'' tune made famous by Muddy Waters." - Safe As Milk (Buddha Records)-1999

  66. J.... ....
