Campbell, Glen - Wichita Lineman Lyrics

I am a lineman for the county and I drive the main road
Searchin' in the sun for another overload
I hear you singin' in the wire, I can hear you through the whine
And the Wichita Lineman is still on the line

I know I need a small vacation but it don't look like rain
And if it snows that stretch down south won't ever stand the strain
And I need you more than want you, and I want you for all time
And the Wichita Lineman is still on the line

[Instrumental Interlude]

And I need you more than want you, and I want you for all time
And the Wichita Lineman is still on the line

[Instrumental to end]

After a time, you may find that "having", is not so pleasing a thing, as "wanting". It is not logical, but it is often true - Mr. Spock.

It's the sound of another time, just before I was born. I never knew this song but I remember hearing it on a mix CD in a friend's shop. It was a sad time because the shop was struggling and my friend was disabled and I was helping out as much as I could. I remember it was a cold, dark, winter's afternoon on an ordinary street in a decaying town in northern England where I've lived all my life. I was carrying out tasks in the shop that required lifting and moving and I remember feeling a deep melancholy mixed with compassion. My friend's life was falling apart, as was the business, but I was there and this song came on and it fit the moment perfectly. I didn't know what it was about and I often wondered about it because its sound and feel stayed with me. I heard it again on TV after Glen died and discovered its title. When I hear it I always think about that obscure afternoon which would otherwise have been lost in the endless treadmill of unexceptional afternoons that make up or lives.

    M.... H....

My Dad was a lineman for the Washington Water Power Company, for many years--that's when they had to climb poles, before they had bucket trucks. He said people would ask him if he was afraid of heights, and he said, "Well, it doesn't matter if I am or not--I have five kids to raise." RIP, Dad--we miss you and love you.😔💒💝

  50. J.... R....

One of those pieces of music that is evocative of a time, that, when you hear it, transports you instantly back to that time. It will always remind me of childhood. I was around five when this song was released (in my life, it was the best of times and the worst of times.) Campbell's music in those years (along with Bacharach, to name another,) temper my bittersweet memories of the years between 1966 and 1971.

  51. R.... D....

I was just 7-8 years old and just a farmboy/countryboy growing up on a farm outside Reeder, North Dakota. I remember hearing this song on mom's radio. The memory sure brought tears to my eyes.

This song makes me miss Glen more than any of his other great recordings, i think this was his masterpiece, thanks Glen and Jim Webb.

  63. J.... R....

The wrecking crew, the genius song writing talent of Jimmy Webb and the sublime singing talent of Glen Campbell comes together to produce a timeless classic. I'm in my mid 60s and must have this song close to a thousand times on the radio and playing it to myself over the years. Great songs never date they say This is still as greater song now as it was back in1968

  69. I.... ....

Back in the early 70s I had a boyfriend who was an electrician who worked on the lines....HE BEAT THE CRAP OUT OF ME WHEN HE DRANK AND ALMOST KILLED ME....

oh yeah...this song just reminds me of his blueberry dark blue eyes...and the fists that broke my face, my ribs, my pelvis...and left me for dead in a snowy intersection in Waukegan, Illinois....oh yea....

  76. R.... L....

Great song takes me back to grammar school in Culver City California walking my girlfriend home from school I remember that day it was rainy and cloudy I wonder whatever happened I was in the fourth grade

  77. C.... I....

My wife left me a card I found about 3 years after she died while cleaning. She knew I would find it one day. It read . . For every joy that passes something beautiful remains. (Inside it read) . May the joys you knew and times you shared help comfort you at this sad time. Then she wrote I love you. This used to be the song we loved to listen too. Now it means even more. Ovarian cancer killed her from the use of baby powder. Who would have thought this could happen. All she wanted was to be a lady. Holidays are the hardest on me since she's been gone.

    C.... I....

What a beautiful note. She must have loved you so much. Thank you for sharing that experience.

    C.... I....

    C.... I....

Such a heartfelt story of loss and perpetual love. May you find comfort and strength in her memory and in this song.

  78. C.... I....

Happy Holiday's to everyone. Find a way to end the hate in the world. You have absolutely nothing to lose and only love to gain.

  79. G.... K....

I am heading off in my Landrover all on my own in a poor foreign land to survey power lines for connection to solar farms. Song came to mind and your photos to go with it made my day. Thankyou.

Out there, by himself. And if you've ever worked such a job by yourself, you'll understand. Add his pre-occupation with a love interest & you got a whole other story that's wayyyy too much, bless him.

    Timeless.

  86. g.... ....

amazing to think this was written by the same guy who wrote macarthur park :-O

  87. F.... I....

My first comment about this song was that 'Ozark brought me here' lol! That was a comment I posted last month. Well as I was listening to my various songs in my Likes play list, I reached to this song once again. What's weird is when we come back to a song or a place for a second or few times later on, we tend to notice things that we didnt see or think of in the first place.. Anyway l was looking at the gorgeous phone operator & she reminded me of Bo Derek. .. This is a beautiful song.. My parents were in their teens when this song came out. and I can't help but think of how time flies. .. ♥

  88. A.... T....

    Ron Swanson brought me here.

  94. U.... G....

But hey whoop whoop. Never heard this song before. Glad Wichita is known for something😀

  95. U.... G....

Only here cause of that disappointing baseball name reveal for Wichita. Wichita linemen was a contender but didn’t make the cut.

Watch out America. The Wichita WindSurge are here🙄🙄🙄

    U.... G....

Yeah and what a moronic name.

  96. G.... D....
