Campbell, Glen - Sadly Beautiful Lyrics

From the very first day that you were born
To the very last time you waved and honked your horn
Had no chance at all to watch you grow
Up so sadly, beautiful
Up so sadly, beautiful

Baby needs a brand new pair of eyes
'Cause the ones you got now see only goodbyes
Had no chance at all to let you know
You're so sadly, beautiful
You're so sadly, beautiful
You're so sadly oh so sadly, beautiful

Well you got your father's hair
And you got your father's nose
But you got my soul
Sadly, beautiful
You're so sadly, beautiful
You're so sadly oh so sadly, beautiful

From the very last time you waved and honked your horn
To a face that turned away pale and worn
Had no chance at all to let you know
You left me sadly, beautiful
You left me sadly, beautiful
You're so sadly oh so sadly, beautiful
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful

Campbell, Glen Sadly Beautiful Comments
  1. T.... C....

The subtle change of gender in his bridge just hit the spot and moved this song into my Top Ten ever during the days after losing my Mother this past August.

The fact that we lost Glen only days after DEEPENS the point, my grief;(

    RIP the two of you...

  2. B.... P....

Glen Campbell covering Paul Westerberg? Whodda thunk.

    B.... P....

    no kidding right :)

    R.I.P Glen Campbell

  7. B.... B....

Glen will always be with his true fans...his music will stay with us forever

  8. m.... ....

Glenn playing PW. Two legends. I can die at rest now.
Glenn personally picked the songs he covered out of about 150.
His interview and playing on the Chris Isaak Hour was terrific.

Only one Glen, Johnny, and so many others we had the privilege of listening to many years ago. This generation really don't know what the world gave us so many years ago. Take time and listen to them.

I grew up in the 60' and loved the Beatles, Hendrix, Cream. But I also loved the songs of Glen Campbell. In 1958 my father told me Johnny Cash was an amazing artist. By 1966 I realized he was right all along.

  10. B.... B....

SLAYER B, I DO AGREE. GLEN IS THE BEST & GREATEST.

  11. K.... W....

This is quite the moment to hear this song. Dad... You did miss out and I pay the price while you appeared to not appear. Goodbye.

  12. S.... B....

No there is no greatest... But there is only 1 Glen Campbell !!

    S.... B....

    Slayer B

  13. h.... ....

Whoa this is kind of like Beck's "Rowboat" as covered by Johnny Cash.  Amaze-bags.  Or Grant Lee Phillips covering Robyn Hitchcock's "I Often Dream of Trains"

  14. M.... M....

    My God. The BEST!

  15. e.... ....

    Beautiful, Beautiful.

  16. K.... H....

Glen was already suffering from early Alzheimer's when he recorded this, so the lyric change may have been just a memory issue and not intentional.

  17. g.... l....

Westerberg is the great American songwriter. The Replacements should be in the Smithsonian.

    g.... l....

Yes, Paul is a great songwriter.

  18. B.... ....

LOL. Glen Campbell covering a Replacements song! I agree that Westerberg's version is much better. In any case, cool.

  19. B.... ....

I don't know if Westerberg was going for the ambiguity in that line, because he wrote it originally for Marianne Faithfull. She never used it, so he recorded it with the original lyric.

  20. C.... C....

To me that part of the song has always been a bit ambiguous, is it a minor rip on "her" father? as the suitor takes the hand of the woman or could it be more general, as if referring to a childhood... at least I prefer the idea of someone being less romantic and more pensive looking back, more reminiscent, thoughtful... Of course we've learned that Glen Campbell has Alzheimers and this song does work in that context as well. Excellent version by Glen Campbell.

  21. R.... W....

@alexharvey richard rodgers? jimmy webb? stephen sondheim? paul simon? just to name a few who might disagree. is there really one greatest??

  22. M.... ....

    @kendouble noticed that right away...grrrrr

  23. T.... ....

Who ever would've thought that Westerberg and Campbell would hook up? I still have my first Campbell Album (got it when I was 7) and I still got my first Replacements tape (got it when I was 16). Now all I need is Bob Seger and Steve Perry to do an album...MINT!

  24. C.... N....

Paul is one of my Favorites and its so great to hear a Legend like Glen honor that. Lovely- C

  25. S.... F....

Not too shabby. But I do prefer Paul Westerberg's original over this. That being said...with Paul's voice in my ear...the pictures are fantastically sadly beautiful. I like!

  26. l.... ....

@kendouble oh no!! not Christian!!! OOOOOOooohhh NOOOoooooooo!! yeesh.

  27. R.... P....

    your photographs are breathtaking,just beautifull

  28. D.... ....

So true, just silly comparing two American treasures. They are BOTH amongst the best we have to offer, and this version makes me happy. Happy to hear one of the finest singers ever do a song by one of the finest songwriters ever. Bet even Jimmy Webb wishes he'd written this!!

  29. J.... D....

I know that is so true.

  30. J.... D....

You have a great gift Dale. Your photos with the song are beautiful.

  31. B.... ....

old lincon school in waterloo, IA that's cool

  32. c.... ....

Great version of a song written by the greatest American songwriter alive today-Paul Westerberg. I hear Paul wants to write new ones now for Glen.

  33. B.... ....

Thanks for posting this, wonderful photos too. Westerberg wrote the song for Marianne Faithfull but she didn't end up recording it so the Replacements did a version instead. It's great to hear Campbell trying it.

  34. e.... ....

It's hard for me not to prefer the original, but it's a kick to hear Glen Campbell sing it. I'd like to hear him sing it live without the overproduction.

  35. t.... ....

Meet Glen Campbell is the new album. I think it deserves a full listen. Great song and very nice photography btw. :)

  36. N.... ....

    I think its sadly beautiful!

  37. C.... ....

Magnificent song! Great video! Well done all around.
