Campbell, Glen - Gentle On My Mind Lyrics
It's knowing that your door is always open
And your path is free to walk
That makes me tend to leave my sleeping bag
Rolled up and stashed behind your couch
And it's knowing I'm not shackled
And the ink stains that are dried upon some line
That keeps you in the backroads
By the rivers of my memory
That keeps you ever gentle on my mind
It's not clinging to the rocks and ivy
Planted on their columns now that bind me
Or something that somebody said
Because they thought we fit together walking
Or forgiving when I walk along some railroad track and find
That you're moving on the backroads
By the rivers of my memory
And for hours you're just gentle on my mind
Though the wheat fields and the clothes lines
And the junkyards and the highways come between us
And some other woman's cryin' to her mother
'Cause she turned and I was gone
I still might run in silence tears of joy might stain my face
And the summer sun might burn me 'til I'm blind
But not to where I cannot see
You walkin' on the backroads
By the rivers flowing gentle on my mind
I dip my cup of soup back from a gurglin'
Cracklin' caldron in some train yard
My beard a roughening coal pile,
And a dirty hat pulled low across my face
Through cupped hands 'round the tin can
I pretend to hold you to my breast and find
That you're waiting from the backroads
By the rivers of my memories
Ever smilin' ever gentle on my mind

The man was a genius!
Is there a full version of this show. I love Glen so much. I believe this was the best song and not Rhinestone Cowboy! I know it was not written for him but he made it famous!
I have shown this to a group of college kids this week - and watched them have the exact same reaction. First a smile, then opening their mouth as they watch then a smile and a shaking of their head as if to say HOW DID HE DO THAT! It was a fun thing to watch!
I just keep coming back here time and time again over the years... Has to be one of my all time favourite video clips..... All of these wonderful people watching and listening with absolute respect to Glen singing 'Johnny Hartford'... And John Hartford's words are so much straight out of the very lifestyle I once lived. Life really can't get all that much richer when you measure riches by what's in your heart.
Truly one of the country greats !!! Im 40 yrs old and grew up with my parents listening to glen and other greats. Now, my 20 yr old son listens to the same music !
What an incredible command of that neck he had.
one of the best pickers ever !
super super talent missed !
Lately as a guitar player I been looking for musicians who played with Ovation brand guitars and I can’t seem to find anyone better than Glen Campbell. Truly amazed by his guitar melodies.
Within the first few seconds you can literally hear in the first few notes what an Ovation or in this case I believe an Adamas guitar sing along. :)
Truly magical to hear even with YouTube’s and this capturings compression.
Shit willie's been looking old for 40 years.
We need this in 2020. Talent..
Well, do it the way you did it.
Ok.
Does anyone know the name of the monster pickers backing up the legendary Glenn Campbell? If you do please email me @
[email protected]
The only approval needed is Roy's foot tap
So so good😊 gave me goosebumps. Love it so much
My n nite song ❤️
sad to think, someone with that sharp a mind would lose it and die
💜💜💜💜💜💜
How wonderful
That,is talent!
This is classic country, the old way. Not the countrified rock of today. The sad thing is that it's getting harder and harder to find this type of music that's recent. Anyone know when this gathering took place? I like this because it's the simple version of country that if amplified, was only to use for a large venue, or for recording purposes. The stuff I see today, along with (heaven forbid) folk and bluegrass music, has too much complication to it. Dobro, maybe, trap set, absolutely not! At least not in blue grass. The only "percussion" you need in bluegrass, comes from the bass fiddle. That's where the beat comes from. Remember that most of bluegrass and folk came from areas where the instrumentation was simple. Guitar, banjo, mandolin, fiddle, and bass fiddle.
Just An Absolutely Brilliant Unbelievable Artist Who's Voice, Instrumental Talents Were Majestic. From The Beach Boys To His Monumental Country Classics. Thank You And God Bless Mr Campbell For This And Many More Monumental Classic Memories From The Legendary Legacy You Have Left Us All To Enjoy.
This is wonderful! For so many reasons, not the least of which, probably most for which is its being one of the all-time best songs ever written. Thanks, John Hartford! https://youtu.be/DbZHIoaapmE
On an Ovation no less
Nothing wrong with Ovations... Al Dimeola played an Ovation at one time.
I love that Glen is smiling and all the other legends are smiling..having a good time ..
Jan 2020! Still in awe of this Master of Music
Oh Glen, what a gentleman and what a talent.
At 2:00 AAAAaaaHaaaa! Great solo, sooo perfectly imperfect.
Most of us have seen great athletes take over a game and be completely in "the zone"..... this is what it looks like to see a superbly gifted musician in the zone.
just, gold
2020 Country lovers where you at?
Most of us are close to the end of our time here on earth I have serious doubts about current generations
If that doesn't make you misty...
On another musical 🎶 level.
If you listen closely you can hear a quick thank you
Foot tappin music 🤩
Another of a very few one of a kind American icon. Fantastic Glen Campbell.
Hey jimmy cee. Do you know what happened to the fantastic song that used to be here, I am talking about "By the Time I go to Phoenix" from the same show. It suddenly was gone. I miss it, have you seen it?
He'll always be well beyond one in a million. My Dad's favorite song. I sang it for him at his funeral and felt Glen was right there helping me along!
i could listen to this all day
Right on
Who is the fella in the purple shirt behind Glen ?
Tom B Gene Watson
Man that was utterly fantastic. What a performance. I'm overwhelmed with appreciation and admiration.
On this same episode Dan Seals sings Everything that glitters is not gold. You really need to check that out. Glen Campbell can play a mean guitar for sure. Always loved these shows.
Roy Clark: i can play it like that but can't sing it like that. Love the respect
That little blip he plays at 1:35 lights them all up. It isn’t easy
I always like to hear a clean guitar sound. Too many play with distortion and other "effects" that, IMO, cover the their talents...or lack there of.
The sheer amount of brilliance captured in this video is fantastic: #1 Glen Cambell #2 the band the backing vocals
Where can we get this entire concert???
He was underated. Sad. He's a sessionist all his life bfore gets a little bigger. He is full of talents yet he was overshaddowed by names he should be bigger.
His playing and singing never ceases to amaze me. Truly one of the best musicians I think has ever lived. I'm so sad Glen has sung his final song and is no longer with us. He truly will be missed.
I have
chet jealous prick
crossis his legs a clear body language statement jealous
the old codger 2 from the left is jealous look at his body language .
That's everyone. Holy shit.
Oh! Se pudéssemos voltar... Teríamos letras, músicas amáveis... Moro em Caucaia-Ceará-Brasil.
At first I got chill bumps and they went away and I got a bigger set . I've heard that song a thousand times and I've never heard it played like that before. My God that was good, and those monster pickers in the band , wow.
this is the best....
What date was this on. Bobby Bare looks great. Glen was fantastic!
How'd you like to be one of the stars sitting behind them, not playing? How awesome would that have been!
For the people asking, this is from the Ryman Country Homecoming.
Justice for Juicy!!
Simply beautiful.
what a big loss to the world Glen no longer in it .
You can tell by the look on his face Willie Nelson is jealous as hell
There was music royalty on stage that day.WOW
when talent was real talent love glen rip
Bad ass!!! Awesome!!
Real music here, I'm glad I grew up on the 70's and 80's, so I could appreciate the lost art of songwriting and playing an instrument.
J.P. Fox they was simpler times, I miss them as well 👍✌️
I am black but i give credit to where credit is due
Boy sure can pluck that guitar
I first saw Glen Campbell live when I was 8 years old in Knoxville Tennessee in 1969. I was fortunate to see him five more times before his death! Glen was very fortunate that the cocaine did not kill him! He was one of my favorite singers of all time!
This song came over the radio in my car the other day and I just smiled from ear to ear as I hadn't heard it in a while. I can see Roy Clark, Willie Nelson and Crystal Gayle is in blue in this video. Can anyone identify anyone else??
Chet Atkins.
BJ Thomas, Willie Nelson
Pure class
Brilliant 👍
anyone know what show this is from?? dying to know!
So sad, I'm 65 years old and I was a young man when this kind of music was prime time. Will there ever be music this great again? Was it prime times because I was young, or was it because these people were the pioneers of what we know as country music?
That guitar solo does nothing but make me feel good.
1.5k you are morons, and know f**k all about music
How about the band....they get right in to it. Very impressive
What a great rendition...and a lovely group of people
Willie Nelson, what the fuck look on his face, Roy Wood, looked impressed.
..............and..........shred................check please.............
Love me some GC. RIP!
What show was this
Love glen Campbell hes a hell of a picker. But if I had my choice I'd be sitting between willie and waylon
I can't tell you how many times I revisit this video.
@Ian Slater. Thanks, bud.I watched that video and yep..He's good :) That looked an awesome concert.
Pure class
This is the America I miss so much.
It's still here you've got to look for it or make it.
Viktor
Still here. And it’s independent of politics. Period.
Where is the rest of this show? What was it called?
How good was Glen, what a group of talented indviduals
YOU WANNA TALK ABOUT HAVIN SKILLS... GLENN YOU RULE ... YOUR THE MAN !!!!!
You can see that everyone wants to join in
When you grow up with all these superstars it brings back such wonderful memories. Glenn was quite a guy and an amazing guitar player.
His voice brings tears to my eyes. ✌🏻🇺🇸
Please, who are all those who are there?
This was in my recommended..and like others have commented It has teared me up,in a good way. I never knew he was such a good guitarist.
If you liked that, listen to him on this: https://youtu.be/PxoJkDQdNBI
As a former Wrecking Crew LA session player, Glen played on a ton of top hits
