Cameron, Alex - Marlon Brando Lyrics

An angel, standing right there before my very eyes
A vision on the arm of another man, but baby this should come as no surprise
And I want to let him know what a pussy he is
And I want to let her know that I match what he is
But I won't
'Cause I heard him say something and I can't seem to forget and I want him to regret it

So I'll you something sister, I'm feeling mighty fine
You tell that little faggot call me faggot one more time
Where I'm from little darling, opinion ain't a crime
You'll see his face tomorrow gonna wish that you were mine

Darling, I want you to know that I heard what he said
And that's okay
I'm pretty cooked but my shit is far from dead
Well I saw you last week and you looked real nice
Outside the super club, I was behind frothy dice
And I know
That we only just met but I think this is real and I want you to feel it

So tell me something baby, tell me I ain't fine
I feel like Marlon Brando circa 1999
Hold on little darling, these feelings make me shine
You see me out here dancing bet you wish that you were mine

But I know
Your friends are gonna talk about me, saying I'm the one to blame
But that bloke should have kept quiet baby, why'd he go and speak my name?

I know
I guess I just want you to be with me
I want you to say that my hair looks nice and my face has a Beckham-like quality
And I know that I blew it and I know it ain't right to be calling men faggots and to be starting fights
But I can't stop
I'm a dam overflowing and I'm a river run wild and I guess it's about that time

I feel like Marlon Brando, feel like Marlon Brando, feel like Marlon Brando, feel it, feel it [x4]

A “King hit” is a popular Australian slang term for a knock-out caliber punch. In American English, the closest is equivalent would be a “haymaker.” Even in Australia, aggravated assault is indeed a crime – in this line, the narrator is emphasizing the fact that he is from a rough area (where such laws may not be enforced) in an attempt to make his masculinity more credible. - Geniuslyrics.com

    M.... W....

Marlon Brando was also in serious physical decline in 1999 lol and that’s just a fact. alckCMRN 4 life

    M.... W....

Its already been established but this is wrong a king hit is when you come up behind someone and punch them in the back of the head usually to knock them out in one hit

  11. j.... ....

This song is so much funnier now that I've seen what Marlon Brando looked like in 1999

  12. s.... ....

Why is this song so freaking good?! I almost feel like I have to listen to it at least once a day. I absolutely love it.

  13. D.... H....

I think her seeing him dancing is prolly why she's glad he ain't hers though

  14. c.... ....

I saw him on tour with the Killers, he was great

  15. G.... O....

I thought the circa 99 line was supposed to be ironic since Marlon was in full "fat Brando" mode by then, but turns out he actually achieved great happiness later in life :-)

    G.... O....

I think he was one of the first adopters of Photoshop. Brando lived a hell of a life.

    G.... O....

Nope. It is supposed to be ironic. The song is critiquing toxic masculinity (e.g. 'where i'm from...a king hit ain't a crime'). Someone on twitter supposed that was what the intention behind this album was, and Alex Cameron re-tweeted it.

  16. N.... K....

I saw him touring with the killers in Detroit and I have to say he is amazing live, underrated by the crowd. Great stage presence.

  17. A.... D....

    Needle Drop brought me here

  18. A.... D....

    Why 1999?

    A.... D....

Alexander Demkin someone suggested that it's because Brando became happy later in life. Idk tho. He was a bloated mess by then I think....

    A.... D....

It's kinda like the lyrics in the song that goes "Dance like John Travolta... now"

    A.... D....

Nah it because in 1999 he weighed over 300 pounds, was difficult on set, refusing to learn lines or even show up etc and had Type 2 Diabetes, but could still look back on his former glory and such

  19. M.... E....

I fee this was the best album of 2017 and this is the best song on it. Though Alex does not have a bad song in him.

But this is what bugs me about this song. In 1999 Marlon Brando was just about dead, having grown into a bloated whale of a human being. Few people have aged worse than he did. Unless it was intentional to make the character in the song a bit more idiotic, I would substitute circa 1959 , 69 , or even 79 into for the often uttered 1999 phrasing.

    M.... E....

Marc Emrich someone said brando was an unhappy person until later in life

    M.... E....

The meaning of that line, and this entire song, is about toxic masculinity. Alex wants the listener to think that the Marlon Brando line means that he feels amazing or popular, but 1999 was a horrible year for Brando. He was fucking fat and just going downhill. So Alex is basically using it ironically to show how bad this character in the song is.

    M.... E....

George Thomas someone said brando found happiness later in life.....now I'm conflicted.....

    M.... E....

Yes but the "Alex Cameron" character wouldn't care about finding happiness, he would only care about shallow things like looks. This line, like many others on the album, such as "Pull the gym pants off a single mother, but this run of luck don't got me feeling all that good" are supposed to showcase how deluded he is

  20. M.... M....

Bitch you wish you were mine.

  21. T.... D....

3:36 Sam France of Foxygen backing vocals.

  22. g.... ....

I saw this hit 1999 views as I was watching it. WTF.

  23. D.... R....

"Where I'm from little darling, A king hit ain't a crime" Genius

    D.... R....

a 'king hit' is when you run behind someone and try to knock them out in a single punch. at least where i'm from.

    D.... R....

Hooking it ain't a crime, I think it is....

    D.... R....

Adam Laycock I didn't hear the preceding part before. I think you're prob correct about what he means. Especially since right before this song came out that one Aussie guy punched the former Prime Minister in the face...or whoever he was.

    D.... R....

Ayy lmao. Yeah punching someone is a crime. In Australia we have very stringent policies against 'coward punches' aka king hits. i.e. when you walk up to an unsuspecting individual and swing at them. There have been issues with this happening leading inextricably to several deaths so now there are very severe punishments - worse than say if you just fought someone.

    D.... R....

I took it as "where I'm from if I want him gone the neighborhood ain't gonna question me"

But it does make more sense in the suckerpunch context "when u see his face tomorrow"

  24. N.... M....

    This man is my hero

    N.... M....

    Noah McNally A national treasure

    N.... M....

    I absolutely agree
