Byrds, The - Old Blue Lyrics
Well I had an old dog and his name was Blue
Yes, I had an old dog and his name was Blue
Well I had an old dog and his name was Blue
Bet ya five dollars he's a good dog too
Blue chased a possum up a holler limb
Blue chased a possum up a holler limb
The possum growled, Blue whined at him
Bye bye Blue
You good dog you
Bye bye Blue
You good dog you
When old Blue died he died so hard
We lowered him down with a golden chain
And every link we called his name
Bye bye Blue You good dog you
Bye bye Blue
You good dog you
My old Blue he was a good old hound
You'd hear him hollering miles around
When I get to Heaven first thing I'll do
I'll grab my horn and call for Blue
Bye bye Blue
You good dog you
Bye bye Blue
You good dog you

Byrds, The Old Blue Comments
Makes me cry everytime I hear it. So many good dogs in my life so many worthless humans.
Still admired in Auburn Maine
If you like music like this, but don't like this particular song that's one thing. If you don't like music like this, so there's no way you'll like this particular song anyway, go away. Don't be an idiot. Don't thumb it at all. Get real. Go find music you DO like and thumb it up down and sideways.
god I love this recording... & love Roger McGuinn
great guitar
McGuinn: "Clarence did great work on everything we ever did, like “Chestnut Mare” and “Old Blue.” He was incredible. He was unpredictable. He was always syncopating and coming out of places you didn’t expect."
No other version matches up.
Love it :)
Every time, EVERY FREAKING TIME, I listen to this song I cry. I think it’s just the thought , like the end says “When I get to heaven first thing I’ll do is grab my horn and call for blue.” When I die and move on to a better place the people and pets I’ve loved and lost will be there waiting for me. And dang it that is just the most comforting thought a person could have.
Clarence White. awesome
I met Clarence White once - doing an interview for a radio station - - he was as nice and as humble a man as you've ever met... a gentleman's gentleman.
he was Jerry Garcia's favorite guitarist. He told Jan Wenner this in a Rolling Stone interview, same one where he blew Wenner away by telling him Dolly Parton was his favorite vocalist. He later said, "Jan was speechless, took 2 minutes for his next question." Was about 1971, right after American Beauty and Workingman's Dead, their turn in another, well-loved direction.
An upbeat rhythm and melody for an otherwise lyrically sad song. Get up and dance!
Willie Nelson
They sound a bit like The Dead on This one, Don't they??
They do, come to think of it.
thaddeus buttmunch I'd say the dead sound like them . This does sound an awful lot like workingman's dead but that wasn't til 1970. The dead are a bunch of hacks if u ask me
Wonderful song!
Very nice song ! It is my style . I am a disco rock hippy . I like different styles of music .
Just maybe the best version of the best doggy song ever...well, it's true....
Agreed!
Old Shep, Bugler, Old yeller (movie), etc.
Lost my Australian shepherd Blue after 14 wonderful years on Memorial Day.... Thanks to a dear friend for sending me this link. R.I.P. Blue - I'll whistle for you when I get there.
Our dog, Rex, passed away on Easter Sunday. Bye, Bye, Rex, you good dog you.
Nate- you probably heard we lost Torre last Saturday (June 28th) to liver cancer... she was a damn fine hound, loved by most who met her, famous throughout Gramercy Park, the East Village, Murray Hill, Flatiron, hell, pretty much from Grand Central to Houston, nearly river to river. She sang to a list of musical instruments- harmonica, bagpipes, soprano sax, violin, and, oh yeah, fire engines... you would have loved her. Rob
Just love Clarence's guitar work on this.

happy birthday gene parsons
Good song.... but I could do without the hand claps..
Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.
Clarence White was the guy who came up with the B-Bender.
And Gene Parsons.
I met Clarence White once - doing an interview for a radio station - - he was as nice and as humble a man as you've ever met... a gentleman's gentleman. And in the interview he told me that it was his father who actually invented (and patented) the tremolo bar / vibrato bar in the form in which we've all become used to! (There were earlier devices, but the ones in use from the 1950s onward were, apparently, the invention of Clarence White's father.)
