Byrds, The - Mind Gardens Lyrics

Once upon a time there was a garden on a high hill
Green and blossomin' round against the sea
And there the sun came and the rain pourin' down
Garden grew and flourished and splattered bits of color on the ground
And it took shape and symmetry and all of life around
But there came winds driven and howling
There came snow and I feared for the garden
So I built a wall and I built another and roofed it over thick and strong
And kept it from the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune
The killing cold could not get in
But when the sun came and the gentle rain of spring
They could not reach the garden behind those walls
It would have died, safely, securely, died
But as I longed and as I learned I tore the walls all down
The garden still lives

Byrds, The Mind Gardens Comments
  1. 7.... ....

I have (and will continue to) defended this song......it was NEVER as bad as the critics made it out to be.....it is experimential, psychedelic, and actually has profound lyrics.....it fit with the times and is still relevant today

712dal "Mind Gardens" is my favorite song off YTY. David Crosby even said it was more important than anything else off the album.

  2. B.... B....

David Crosby was once that "Mind Gardens" was important than anything off Younger Than Yesterday, and guess what he's right.

  3. B.... B....

    Exceptional psychedelia!!

I'll never understand why this song gets hated so much.

Alban Pfisterer This song gets hate? How, and from where?

I like the alternate version much more. I never thought the song was as bad as most people made it out to be though. Maybe it is pretentious, but it was an atonal experimental song and I think that turned people off. So was "Eight Miles High" to a degree, but that song was more successful. I never understood why they re-recorded "Why?" though. The original was another one of those songs that the Byrds wasted as B sides. I think they produced the best B sides of any other band of the time, including the Beatles.

Thing about that is, The Beatles' B-sides were A-side quality! They couldn't help it. ;-D
