Byrds, The - Lover Of The Bayou Lyrics

Catfish pie in gris gris bag
I'm the lover of the bayou
Mark your doorstep with a half wet rag
I'm the lover of the bayou

Raised and swam with the crocodile
Snake-Eye taught me the Mojo style
Sucked and weened on chicken bile
I'm the lover of the bayou

I learned the key to the master lock
I learned to float in the water clock
Learned to capture the lightning shock
I'm the lover of the bayou

And I got cats an' teeth and hair for sale
I'm the lover of the bayou
There are zombies on your tail
I'm the lover of the bayou

I cooked the bat in the gumbo pan
I drank the blood from a rusty can
Turned me into the Hunger Man
I'm the lover of the bayou

    Forever !!

  6. J.... M....

“Drank the blood from a rusty can” that is one badass line.

  7. E.... S....

Then there was the show they did with the Flying Burrito Brothers.... outstanding !

  8. S.... M....

The best song of the later Byrds lineup

  9. E.... N....

    Sick track

  10. g.... ....

god bless the ghost of Clarence White

  11. A.... P....

    Check tom petty ;)

  12. m.... t....

This is the Byrds if there ever were some.

  13. g.... d....

Saw them at the Community Concourse in San Diego when they were promoting this music. Excellent concert. Outdone themselves.

  14. S.... E....

    - MAGNIFICENT burning piece... Who composed this song ? Byrds or Dylan ?

    S.... E....

Roger McGuinn wrote it with Jacques Levy.

  15. L.... S....

Mr. MgGuinn and Parsons no better song

  16. w.... ....

the 2nd album I bought when I came home from nam...still sounds GREAT!

  17. g.... ....

god bless the ghost of clarence white. he own this.

  18. A.... T....

This is the best version. I deeply love the line up in this period of the band. I only got into them in the early 90's (due to my age). I once had a dream I saw them live. I was close to tears when I woke up at the encore. The live in Manchester recording is great for lovers of this period (and a chance to check out the great bass work of Clarence too).

  19. J.... R....

    Lover of the Byrds

  20. c.... ....

    Simply over the top !

  21. J.... G....

Clarence White's guitar is absolutely stunning here. Love it!

  22. W.... W....

hi roger and the Byrds will go down in history .............

  23. b.... g....

Skip Battin on bass and Gene Parsons on drums

    b.... g....

Amazing rhythm section. Guitarsts monstrous too.

    b.... g....

    CLARENCE!

  24. G.... F....

Jerry Garcia called Clarence White "an incredible electric guitar player" who "took advantage of the light setup and the Telecaster snarl to get a kind of nasty, biting sound....There's been nobody like him since. His playing is what the guitar is all about." Here it is.

    G.... F....

NICE info...Clarence wailed, no doubt...Jerry with excellent ear, along Mr White, lauded THE Roy Buchanan early on...

    G.... F....

+George Felton Ever see the Playboy After Dark set?

    G.... F....

+Jeffrey Richards Yes, Jeffrey, I watch it often. I really like "This Wheel's on Fire." Great song, great version.

    G.... F....

@Peter Short if only Roy had had the chance to play in a big group!

  25. B.... H....

Excellent song, from my teens, when only Jim aka Roger McGuinn was left from the Byrds line up. They came to play in Liverpool Uni c1971, but none of my friends wanted to see them. Later heard they were brilliant. Have since seen Mr McGuinn on his own, he was excellent

    B.... H....

+Bob Hughes Bob are you really the great scribe for Uncut in addition to other fine periodicals, who goes by the name Rob Hughes? I think so.
Did you also have that very UN-memorable interview on Twitter of all places a few years back with the #WorldsBiggestHomophobe Crazy Michelle Shocked? If I'm confusing you with the another person, my apologies but it's a compliment since I admire him. But I don't think I am.

  26. k.... ....

    Never heard this one.

  27. P.... K....

    the best

  28. H.... J....

    Love that lazy, syncopated guitar.

  29. J.... K....

    best song ever

  30. G.... M....

welcome back home, iraq ect. healing song, hungry planet people should have listened CLARENCE

  31. F.... H....

They sound much better than the Beatles!

    F.... H....

Really? Much better than the Beatles? Duh...

    F.... H....

    Pointless comment

  32. n.... ....

Cookin' like a lot of 70's. Go Byrds. Still getting the vibes.

  33. M.... I....

There was nothing better than going to a Byrds concert back then. Thanks for sharing, the song sounds as good as ever to me. Clarence White, rest in peace, has always been one of my favorite guitarists, and when playing with Roger McGuinn they were quite a dynamic duo.

    M.... I....

EASILY among THE best duos...As anyone with the ability to hear sound will attest...

  34. J.... S....

The Byrds never captured the rawness displayed here in the study. This song more than most recorded live is a testament to a single mold broken which no blond-haired bearded Gainesville FL boy (as good as he is) has or will ever duplicate.

    J.... S....

+DateTwo Relate  I do agree mostly with you, though I do love the version that that 'blond-haired, bearded Gainesville, Florida boy' does as well.  :-)

    J.... S....

Layla Sims Toms whole career was placed on copying the Byrds

    J.... S....

Tom Petty performed this song live with Roger McGuinn. I think the Mudcrutch version was excellent, not just an attempt the duplicate the Byrds recording.

  35. M.... M....

I learned to capture the lightnin' shock
I'm the lover of the bayou
Beware a zombie is on your tail
I'm the lover of the bayou

  37. b.... ....

Has or will there ever be a better two guitar combination that McGuinn and Clarence White, God rest his soul? I don't think so, at least for music like this.

  38. P.... M....

    The original Red Dirt!

  39. g.... ....

god bless the ghost of clarence white

  40. g.... ....

this means a lot to me..........

  41. .... B....

    what a song!!

    .... B....

Indeed. Gives me tingles every time I listen.

  42. i.... ....

ah those were the days... for me at least!

    i.... ....

Yes...they were. RIP Clarence and Skip.

  43. D.... ....

Roger McGuinn, Clarence White, Skip Battin, Gene Parsons, Hell Yeah!!!

    D.... ....

I  believe  this  was the Best incarnation of " the Byrds "  as far as I'm Concerned

    D.... ....

Drew625in2une far and away the best lineup

  44. T.... O....

    crank this one up

  45. A.... D....

    Clarence White!

  46. p.... s....

Yea, he stole from The Stones and Dylan, as well...Good point on second thought...

  47. b.... ....

This is like the first time someone played country lead guitar with MUSCLE!

If you think about it, Clarence White and the Byrds pretty much paved the way for today's country music. Remember, this is the early 70's.

Today's country artists owe one helluva debt to the Byrds of 40 years ago.

    b.... ....

    Before Lynyrd Skynyrd

  48. j.... c....

My apologies to the whole "it was your reference to someone else's comment" ( I genuinely didn't realise).Petty doesn't jangle nearly as much as people imagine and the 12-string only appears on maybe a few songs of his.The song which is often trotted out as evidence of this is "American Girl" - a song which features no 12 string guitars and which is ,according to Petty himself based on Bo Diddley.

  49. p.... s....

Hardly derivative? LOL,James, LOL! It is such common knowledge (anyone with ears can instantly hear the imitation...), that my comment was in reference to SOMEONE else's observation of Petty's copying...

  50. j.... c....

Hardly derivitive. If I were to make a compilation LP of "Tom Petty's Byrdsongs" I would have to stretch the definition of what the Byrds' sound was to make one LP full of Petty's songs - and three of those songs would be covers of Byrds songs anyway.

  51. p.... s....

That's some SERIOUS shit right there...Senior yr in HS we got fucked up to this and MANY incredible LPs...Country rock at it's BEST, in my book, this line up and LP...Eagles wished they burned like this...Poco and New Riders Of Purple Sage sometime worked up a sweat close to these guys, but Clarence White/Roger McGuin combo toooooo amazing...

  52. p.... s....

To say the least it's better....Petty is a poor man's first of The Byrds....So derivitive it is a joke....Here's the real thing...

  53. g.... e....

I hope the drunk driver that killed him is burning in hell as we speak

  54. P.... ....

Oh I forgot the byrds did this. Even better than tom petty!!!!

  55. C.... K....

Great great bloody tune. The Byrds at their cracking best.

  56. L.... ....

Just heard this for the very 1st time on a cable tv music station...NICE!!!

  57. M.... B....

From the "(untitled)" Lp..it was going to be named "Phoenix" according to McGuinn, but the lead sheet said "Untitled",so,Roger said,"That's the way the company printed it"..ELO's First Lp,mistitled "No Answer" after an unanswered call to their UK Label by a United Artists Secretary!

  58. g.... ....

god bless the soul of Clarence White.

  59. g.... ....

thanx for keeping this posted. god bless the soul of Clarence White

Wow, forgot about this amazing song! Great post!
