Byrds, The - Lady Friend Lyrics

Here it comes again, it's going to happen to me
Here it comes, I should have learned to duck
She's going to say, she's going away
And I will have to live without her and survive

Here it comes, it looks just like the last wave I drowned in
Here it comes, and I'm so far from shore
She's going to go, and take her trinkets
And I will have to live without her and survive

Here it comes again, the night is going to fall
Here it comes, she's going to say good-bye
She's going to go, and leave only me
And I will have to live without her and survive.

Byrds, The Lady Friend Comments
  1. v.... ....

I re-discovered this song recently. The harmonies are wonderful. But it's too short and it's hurried.
Carl Weaver thought it may have been inspired by Penny Lane. Well, I don't know who the producer of Lady Friend was, but George Martin was a genius for sure. After McCartney hummed and strummed his new song idea Penny Lane, it turned out a carefully balanced recording, almost a micro-symphony. Imho much more could have been done with Lady Friend too. Making it longer to begin with- and in the mid section a counter melody with 'retrospective' vocals. It would make the brass less dominating., less like "quick let's add some, um, yes, trumpets!".
In the studio, a more fleshed out recording of Lady Friend would probably have cost less time than what was spilled over bickering and fist fights...
    Damned pop star egos....

"Lady Friend" really should have been included in the "Notorious Byrd Brothers" album, but there was a lot of friction between David Crosby and the rest of the group during the recording of that album.

I was born in 1990 and I prefer the 60s and 70s over today's garbage!

    You're blessed.

    Press play y magic happens!!!!

  5. R.... N....

I think Crosby is a complete asshole, but this is a great song.

    R.... N....

Less so now than then. Of course he drops less acid now- for all that "peace and love" it sure turned some people into pricks.

  6. S.... C....

I really love this song. I just think Crosby doing a song and pulling McGuinn's guitar off it while refusing to sing on songs like "Don't Make Waves" and "Goin' Back" made it look like he wanted to take over The Byrds which would not have worked. The other three hated him by then. Mike Clarke would end up in fist fights with Crosby over and over. McGuinn isn't even on this while Crosby imitated Jim's playing and re-recorded the 12 string part behind Jim's back. Hillman played rhythm guitar and Crosby played bass and Rickenbacker 12 string. He did a good job, but going solo under the band's name seems, well, you know....

    S.... C....

How do you know Mcguinn is not on this?

Another great David Crosby composition, overlooked in the Byrds' catalogue.

    j.... s....

In what regard is it overlooked? A harmless comment for sure but I just see "underated" & "overlooked" comments on almost every single song, aside from massive hits. The song wasnt on any Byrds album, yet its still well known and regarded as one of their best, and one of Crosbys first gems. What do you mean by overlooked?

  8. C.... W....

Possibly influenced by Penny Lane; especially horn break in middle

Nobody else did a song like this back then. It's really an excellent song, but a huge mistake in production was adding trumpets! This song, along with "It Happens Each Day," IMO, should have been a part of YTY, instead of "Mind Gardens."

    G.... S....

Crosby hadn't even written this yet when YTY was recorded. This was recorded in mid 1967, months after YTY was released, and was originally intended to be on NBB. It didn't make the cut on that album due to poor sales as a single, and the firing of Crosby from the band (although the B-side, Hillman's Old John Robertson was on NBB). It is very odd that Lady Friend and Old John Robertson are included as bonus tracks for the YTY reissue rather than NBB.

Regarding the production, Crosby was very critical of Gary Usher's "wall of sound" mixing, although I think he was just making excuses for the poor sales. I do share your opinion on Mind Gardens - it sucks, anything else would be an improvement.

    Always a very special Byrd's song !

  12. G.... S....

Our local rock station only played it for a few days and it dropped into oblivion. A testament to how much those dorks knew.

2:00 to the end sounds like the spongebob theme

    N.... S....

Noah Smits It does! Great comment. Thanks for that laugh. I think about it every time I hear this now. Haha.

    N.... S....

Noah Smits that's crazy how you picked that off, I hear it. Spongebob was the first show I could actually sit still and watch with my kid cause it's funny. she was getting older, before that it was baby shows, they were killing me, it was hard to watch those.

    N.... S....

Well, it would be typical of Crosby, I'd say, given his predilection of nautical imagery.

  15. E.... H....

Eight Miles High-ish intro, bass lines anyway...Thanks for the post and allowing us to hear stuff at least I haven't heard in decades...

  16. J.... R....

My favorite song from the Byrds an underrated song from the 60's!

    J.... R....

Underrated how? I see the terms underrated and overlooked on just about every song on this entire website. At I point youve got to start questioning it. All songs cant be underrated. The Byrds are still prominent and well remembered and regarded as pioneers of a variety of rock sub genres. David Crosby is an american icon and this is one of his first gems. It was never released on a Byrds album yet people still know it. It gets included on Byrds anthology and compilations. How is it underrated? What kind of praise do you think it really deserves over and above what it already gets over 50 years since it came out?

  17. J.... A....

simplemente una de las mejores canciones que hicieron the byrds. te olvidas de lo que te hizo una chica!.....
