Byrds, The - Hickory Wind Lyrics

In South Carolina, there're many tall pines
I remember the oak tree that we used to climb
But now when I'm lonesome I always pretend
That I'm headin' the field of hickory wind

I started out younger, had most everything
All the riches and pleasures, what else can life bring?
But it makes me feel better each time you begin
Callin' me home, hickory wind

It's a hard way to find out that trouble is real
In a faraway city with a faraway feel
But it makes me feel better each time you begin
Callin' me home, hickory wind
Keeps callin' me home, hickory wind

does anyone really know who sings the passionate high harmony on this masterpiece? Terry Melcher?, Kevin Kelley? I know it's not Roger or Chris. It's a very unusual voice but great.

    S.... W....

Stan Wollmers ... Joking? It’s Roger and Chris!

    S.... W....

    Stan Wollmers emmylou harris

    S.... W....

@Sw1 Moco Nope; that was later.

Gram's life was a true Tennesse Williams play, and his voice is so haunting+beautiful, no one will ever come close to him, his soul burst thru in every song!

No it was not release Williams

  17. D.... G....

Gram always wanted to play at the Grand Ole Opry, and he got to play this song that he wrote for his grandmother and she was in the audience wow he must have been in 7th Heaven

  25. R.... Z....

Its a hard way to find out that trouble is real in a far away city with a far away feel

  26. v.... M....

It interests me a lot that a group of "hippies" in a rock and roll band came together and made one of the most pure and beautiful country records ever made Nashville is full of a bunch of fakes
People who listen to country come from all backgrounds of life and the people that make the best records are just the people that love the music
    Nothing more than that
Gram parsons was one of the artists in the 60's and 70's that made country youthful and energized and new and it sounded fresh again with many different acts.
Thank god he exists cause it's so good

    v.... M....

vinnie McClung gram was a southern gentleman

  27. R.... P....

birds disbanded except Hillman, added Gram, and a new sound captured in Sweetheart. very controversial, but it  worked. This came after the masterpiece no one heard - Notorious Byrd Brothers, one of the 10 greatest albums rock albums ever IMO. Sweetheart was also wonderful, but utterly different to their previous sound. Then the energy went through Crosby who founded CSN. This is one perspective.

    R.... P....

    Roy Posner You're forgetting McGuinn.

  28. J.... M....

Gram's voice with the steel guitar make this a very special !

    J.... M....

Don't forget Chris. It wouldn't be the same without his harmony.

  29. A.... D....

    beautiful!!!

  30. C.... G....

    hot burrito also

  31. C.... G....

    best Ever!! ♥♡♥

  32. J.... M....

Somebody didn't like this?? Gram's song & his voice!

  33. j.... ....

    Truly awesome.

  34. 2.... ....

My favourite Gram Parsons song. I have sung this many times (with no-one listening!) and might give it a go if I was ever asked to perform it at a karaoke. Goes very deep.

    2.... ....

    Go for it!

  35. s.... ....

I'm really getting into Gram Parsons. The youthful country acts of today's age could have learned a lot from him. Case in point, this masterpiece. What a lovely, beautiful song!

  36. D.... J....

    this is heartbreaking...so beautiful...

  37. J.... D....

The write up on this song is fantastic.

  38. m.... ....

Seems like the greatest of the Gram Parsons songs.

  39. R.... C....

This is REAL, GOOD country. Unlike the drivel the Nashville establishment(which is as a contemptible group of people as ever there was) has pushed, sanctioned and otherwise foisted on the people.

    R.... C....

Can you imagine that when the Byrds did appear at the Grand Ol' Opry during the 60's they were dismissed as "Hippies"?!

    R.... C....

    Well said. Nashville,Rhinestone Cowboy-junk

  40. O.... C....

Why dont they make music like this anymore?...

    O.... C....

+jake greene Gram Parsons being dead has something to do with it, I would imagine.

    O.... C....

cause the country singers today don't know what real country is anymore

    O.... C....

Old Chevys On The Foothills because it takes talent, soul and some pain.

It’s easier to make a cheap movie or album than it is to make one that takes passion, time and skill.

  41. J.... P....

rubber soul thanks for including the excellent history

  42. J.... S....

    gram :()

  43. C.... B....

    Beautiful country waltz.  Thanks, Gram.

  44. l.... ....

    what a masterpiece.

    l.... ....

lumaz71 one of my all time favorite albums, since it came out.

  45. t.... ....

    love this song..

  46. S.... F....

"Wasn't Born to Follow" is probably the best song by the Byrds. It infuses great psychedelic effects with the simple folk riffs which influenced alot of psych music and was especially characteristic of the byrds. The harmonies and great guitar playing by mcguinn and the band do justice to King's beautiful poetry.

  47. H.... ....

    best country song ever made

    H.... ....

+HatchY I agree with you--no "country music artist" ever composed and performed a song as good as this one

    H.... ....

    @Kelly Guthrie y'all can't be serious.

  50. j.... ....

"Wasn't Born To Follow" was, for the record, written by Carole King and Gerry Goffin and by nobody in the Byrds, though they certainly did credit to the song. Wouldn't recommend waxing too eloquent about it's "psychedelic roots". ;-)

  51. m.... ....

The Byrds was an astonishing band. I loathed them for turning country when I was 17. Hated this album back then - was this the psychedelic group who had just stunned me with "Wasn't Born to Follow" ? Country was for old folks in nursing homes. Now I love this album. I am now officially old - fuck it :)

the Wiki article is a bit shite but its a great song!
