Byrds, The - Goin' Back Lyrics

I think I'm going back to the things that I learned so well in my youth
I think I'm returning to those days when I was young enough to know the truth
Now there are no games to only pass the time
No more electric trains, no more trees to climb
But thinking young and growing older is no sin
And I can play the game of life to win

I can recall the time when I wasn't ashamed to reach out to a friend
Now I think I've got a lot more than just my toys to lend
Now there's more to do than watch my sailboat glide
And every day can be a magic carpet ride
A little bit of courage is all we lack
So catch me if you can, I'm goin' back

Now there's more to do than watch my sailboat glide
But every day can be a magic carpet ride
A little bit of courage is all we lack
So catch me if you can, I'm goin' back

Byrds, The Goin' Back Comments
  1. J.... ....

This reminds me of my dad who died of alcoholism at the age of 52 nine years ago. He never saw the days of 'old' but lived life like a fire rocket.

  2. O.... M....

Goffin and King from the Brill Bldg. Now that's going back. The best song by them or the most enjoyable by the Byrds is I'll feel a whole lot better (when you're gone)

    O.... M....

Yeah', that tune rocks my brains out! 🤪

  3. d.... c....

Dusty Springfield did a great job too.!

  4. c.... s....

I think of bicycles and baseball diamonds. Tall summer trees and sunny swimming pools. Catch me if you can I'm going back.

For die-hard fans of The Byrds and especially Gene Clark. The good news is that a very comprehensive article about Gene (https://popdiggers.com/gene-clark-the-byrd-and-the-best-introduction/) has been published, although we’re
just about to start with the introduction, including links to his best songs as a teaser. While you’re checking the article, why not take a look at the PopDiggers site (https://popdiggers.com/) – there are lots of articles in English. I must say, that Horse did a commendable job playing rhythm guitar.

    I think I'm goin' back
To the things I learned so well in my youth
    I think I'm returning to
Those days when I was young enough to know the truth
    Now there are no games
    To only pass the time
    No more coloring books
    No Christmas bells to chime
But thinking young and growing older is no sin
And I can play the game of life to win
    I can recall a time,
When I wasn't ashamed to reach out to a friend
And now I think I've got
A lot more than a skipping rope to lift
    Now there's more to do
    Than watch my sailboat glide
And everyday can be my magic carpet ride
And I can play hide and seek with my fears
And live my days instead of counting my years
Let everyone debate the true reality,
I'd rather see the world the way it used to be
A little bit of freedom's all we're lack
So catch me if you can
    I'm goin' back

No more electric trains. I had an HO gauge layout down the basement in my home in Brooklyn when I was 8. I'd go back in a second. Happy times being a kid.

    E.... C....

These are the lyrics from Dusty Springfield's version, which are NOT exactly the same as the original lyrics, written by Gerry Goffin, and sung by Carole King, who wrote the music. Most others who covered the song, including the Byrds, stick to the original.

  21. d.... ....

"I can recall a time / When I wasn't ashamed to reach out to my friends"

  22. j.... l....

I never tire of this version of the Goffin-King song. In fact I truly never tire of anything that The Byrds have recorded.

  23. b.... ....

This tune is so powerful, I find myself listening to it time and time again.

  24. G.... B....

I see David Crosby turned himself into a horse.

    G.... B....

Don't David will think you mean he is well hung.

  25. r.... r....

    Freddie's version was better

  26. B.... O....

Take me back, To the real music, Magic.

  27. J.... M....

    McGuinn and Dusty Springfield ahh.

  28. r.... ....

@James O'Brien - Yeah, i just listened to the "Nils Lofgren" album for the first time in ages. Goin' Back is the last cut. I worked at a record store for 3 years, and that album was on our turntable a lot. It had a kind of magic to it.

  29. S.... J....

I musta listened to this song in the high tens, if not more than a hundred times, and I have never noticed the bum note at 1:10 before.

  30. R.... D....

I can only think of one word...perfect.

  31. C.... W....

Good but dusty Springfield version better but only my opinion

  32. D.... ....

I am a millenial but belong to another era .... the modern world hurts me

  35. o.... m....

Don't we all love the BYRDS......and the long gone 'summer of love'......anyone have a time machine....?..ebay?

  36. T.... M....

This song is the epitomé of the west coast sound, an absolute stone cold classic, end-of! I have spoken!? ;)

  37. w.... ....

Carole King, Gerry Goffin : will you still love me tomorrow? ; Up on the roof ....

  38. J.... ....

What a gorgeous rich arrangement of this tune--strings, steel guitar, keyboards, even a glockenspiel, and of course Roger's 12-string, Chris's bass and Jim Gordon on drums. Not for nothing was "The Notorious Byrd Brothers" called "the American Sergeant Pepper".

  39. g.... ....

I believe the version by Dusty Springfield was played at her funeral.

    g.... ....

grooverunner That's whose version I was trying to recall. TY

  40. S.... I....

Would i go back ? ....in a heartbeat

  41. J.... O....

Of all people, Nils Lofgren does a great piano-based version of this wonderful song

    J.... O....

listening to it right now, thanks for the tip.
    good version.

  42. N.... R....

    sigh ****

  43. R.... R....

the horse is David Crosby in effigy. there was some discord between David and Roger. Today all is well between them.

  44. B.... T....

I used to listen to this album with my brother who was a year older than me back in the 60's. He left this world over 40 years ago. I miss him every day. This music sure takes me back there.

    B.... T....

music can do that.........time and time again.

    B.... T....

... I think your brother is better than us, Rest In Peace ... ❤

  45. M.... T....

    no more trees to climb

  46. c.... ....

i.m.h.o.:best version of this classic goffin and king compsition.

  47. D.... F....

Best version was by Dusty Springfield

  48. U.... ....

Well sung the Byrds . But For me , Dusty Springfields version brings the most emotion and meloncholly feeling to the song .

  49. a.... m....

    this song is fucking great

  50. P.... I....

The begin sounds like "lady Jane" of the Rolling Stones...

  51. P.... M....

How I loved the music of the sixties especially during the counter-culture period of 1967-
1972 with the girls and their iron pressed hair and tide-dyed jeans...

  52. T.... H....

Tommy Flemming sings a lovely version of this classic

  53. E.... O....

Crosby,he said this song was very good, and i agree.

  54. B.... S....

Believe it or not, Gene Clark recorded his vocal track in the song.

    B.... S....

Brian Sam Wouldn't be the same without it. Viva Gene. No. Other

  55. C.... L....

.....this was maybe my favorite song when I was almost a kid.......now I'm gettin' old and.......
I'm going back. In 1969 I had a band ,Telegraph Ave. , and I decided to play it.....still my favorite...

  56. L.... S....

    magical

  57. L.... T....

    Ahh ethereal Byrds beauty

  58. D.... M....

It's a little known fact that Gene Clark rejoined The Byrds for at least part of this album including this song. There is a video on YouTube of the band performing this tune, and Gene is there, front and center. He accounts for the richness of the vocals here. Love you Gene.

    D.... M....

I've heard rumors that Gene sang on this But, I would like to hear Roger or Chris comment.

  59. E.... L....

My favorite song by this fabulous group.  Really does take me back :)

  60. B.... B....

    absolutely fantastic

  61. T.... D....

    fantastic album

  62. Q.... ....

    Cosmic Country

    Q.... ....

Oh yeah, you're right. This song takes you out of this grey and cold world.

  63. A.... M....

the byrds great harmonies. love the song ' chestnut mare'.

    A.... M....

    I agree

    A.... M....

    Byrds and Hollies, harmony heaven!

  64. J.... C....

    Love this version. Thanks.

  65. N.... H....

What was the line up of the band on this album?

    N.... H....

The horse played a fucking mean guitar!! A true multi instrumentalist. Genius. Never drank the water though!! Stubborn fuck he was!! ;) Mr Ed used to run his fan club!! That's how fucking good he was!

    N.... H....

    I can believe it.

    N.... H....

Nate Herman Believe it was Roger, Chris and Michael, although Michael left during or shortly after the recording as did Gene Clark , who was involved with singing this track. This was the first album without Crosby. Definitely a different sound from anyone else but it certainly grew on me. I am unaware of what part the horse played in the recording.

    N.... H....

Crosby's on the album. He sings of 'Tribal gathering'. Jim Gordon played drums on this because Mike had more or less pulled out. And I don't think Gene was ever on this.

    N.... H....

    Gene left in ‘66

  66. M.... S....

Best version along with Mercury's and Springield's

    M.... S....

    i like Nils Lofgren's version

    M.... S....

Yeah. Sorry Bird-fans. But compared to Nils' great interpretation, and even to Carole's Original - this really is a lame thing.

  67. D.... J....

would be a good song for Bernie Sanders

  68. R.... C....

Great song written by Carole King and Gerry Goffin and recorded by The Byrds on October 9, 1967.

  69. P.... B....

Beautiful sounds that came out of Laurel Canyon in the '60's. I heard that the Byrds were not within being good musicians at first; LOL.Well they definitely got it together as a folk/rock group.Hillman, McGuinn, Clark not good?!. Opinions do vary.

    P.... B....

they were good musicians.....only jelous music snobs say otherwise

    P.... B....

Paul Brooks ... Roger ( Jim) always a great musician! Child prodigy! He backed up Chad MitchellTrio in 1962 ! Look up CMT and look at Banjo player on UTube! Produced Judy Collins !

  70. M.... ....

They made the right choice putting this on the album instead of Crosby's Triad. That's a weird fuckin' tune lol.

    M.... ....

    Triad is beautiful.
This is the album where Crosby parted ways, I think, and he stayed folky and became even bigger and the Byrds went all country.

  71. c.... s....

    Very good

  72. H.... M....

Yes different versions by different artists are all unique. I like this version and Mercury's (amazing) the best.

    H.... M....

+Hobart Mallow Agreed. Think it was still put out under the old Larry Lurex moniker.

    H.... M....

Nils Lofgren does a really good version too

  73. w.... ....

this song just exudes sunshine, what great times and songs..

  74. D.... S....

Goin Back? Hell I never left!

    D.... S....

@sandinyourshoes Experiences sure. But, even today San Francisco remains as a little slice of heaven on Earth. What does Los Angeles have today? The same it had back then. Nothing.

    D.... S....

@Craig Gomez, I have seen both of these amazing Pacific gems.

    D.... S....

You should also take in the central coast from Santa Barbara north

    D.... S....

@Craig Gomez, Santa Barbara is gorgeous and a very relaxing town on long weekends.

    D.... S....

I'm right there with you, Dean...

  75. M.... L....

  79. G.... S....

one of my all-time favorite songs. from one of their best and least known albums

    G.... S....

it was their best selling album in the UK....in the charts for 12 weeks

  80. m.... ....

Never listened to this whole song . I only listened to the obvious Byrds albums. This one is certainly in my playlist now.

  81. J.... B....

Freddie Mercury did an absolutely haunting version of this..

    J.... B....

@James B Check out the Nils Lofgren version of this song too. Lots of piano. Different but very good

    J.... B....

Thanks, Brian- I'll check it out!  Sorry for the late reply!

  82. A.... P....

Be ready to be transported instantaneously to heaven at 2.00 and again at 2.54. And, be ready to become  a byrdsfanatic as well. I am one.

    A.... P....

the drumroll and the final choir is one of the climaxes (?) of their carreer and american music as well.

    A.... P....

Couldn't put it better,I'd gladly die in those two moments.

  83. t.... ....

i first heard this on the radio and fell in love with it. From the Byrds' BEST album! Carole's versions  on "Writer" and "Pearls" are lovely as well, if far less spacy! Thanks for the upload -- this should have been a HUGE hit in 1968!

And then, ladies and gents, after more than 40 years, for your listening enjoyment:

    Mr. Phil Collins - beautiful!

  89. O.... F....

    nice NICE

  90. L.... C....

    Who sings? Cris Hillman?

    L.... C....

+Pauline Lievens he didn't sing on this album

    L.... C....

+captainsoul1953 Although there is some disagreement among the band's biographers, Clark is generally viewed as having contributed background vocals to the songs "Goin' Back" and "Space Odyssey" from the forthcoming Byrds' album The Notorious Byrd Brothers, as well as being an uncredited co-author, with Roger McGuinn, of "Get to You", from that album.[19] ((wikipedia)

    L.... C....

+Pauline Lievens Pauline....yes...Id forgotten about that.....Chris Hillman in particular said that Gene should have a credit for Get to you........Crosby also gets sidelined re this album though he's all over it and even plays bass on Old John Robertson.....regards.....jim

    L.... C....

+captainsoul1953 Thank you Jim.. did you read my response at your comment at the Tim Hardin song a few years ago? Let me know if you still look for the song.. it's a small world :) best wishes Pauline

    L.... C....

Luiz Claudio Cursino Teixeira that’s def8nitely roger McGuin singing the lead. Hillman may be doing the high harmonies, though that could also be Crosby, supposedly gen Clark is also singing and you can hear him a bit in the la la la la part.
    .

  91. M.... S....

Great song! One of the best bands!

  92. m.... ....

this is the song that got david crosby fired from, the byrds...

    m.... ....

Late response..but how do you figure?

    m.... ....

copenhagen1968 late response too, but it came down to Crosby not liking this song, and the other members choosing to record this song rather than Crosby’s “Triad” for the album

    m.... ....

@Nick Castillo and then Jefferson Airplane's Grace Slick and Paul Kantner recorded Triad with David.

  93. c.... ....

It sold really well in the UK.....album charts for 9 weeks

  94. a.... e....

  95. W.... F....

One of my favorites from one of the greatest periods in musical history. I'm having this one played at my send-off.

  96. W.... F....

For the first treehouse that I built (shortly after my father died). For the times I laid down in my grandfather's wheat fields to watch tall billowy clouds sail across the sky. For the first time I cast a line into a river with my father. For my alpha and omega true and forever love (My Lady Barbra Rose). Barbra - come back from Glory for me very very soon. I'll be waiting for you.

  97. P.... G....

    Sorry. Yes, you are correct.

  98. I.... W....

I fully agree with you, Dijkeman. I keep this album as a precious relic in my vinyl collection.
