This reminds me of my dad who died of alcoholism at the age of 52 nine years ago. He never saw the days of 'old' but lived life like a fire rocket.

Goffin and King from the Brill Bldg. Now that's going back. The best song by them or the most enjoyable by the Byrds is I'll feel a whole lot better (when you're gone)

These are the lyrics from Dusty Springfield's version, which are NOT exactly the same as the original lyrics, written by Gerry Goffin, and sung by Carole King, who wrote the music. Most others who covered the song, including the Byrds, stick to the original.

I never tire of this version of the Goffin-King song. In fact I truly never tire of anything that The Byrds have recorded.

This tune is so powerful, I find myself listening to it time and time again.

I see David Crosby turned himself into a horse.

Don't David will think you mean he is well hung.

@James O'Brien - Yeah, i just listened to the "Nils Lofgren" album for the first time in ages. Goin' Back is the last cut. I worked at a record store for 3 years, and that album was on our turntable a lot. It had a kind of magic to it.

I musta listened to this song in the high tens, if not more than a hundred times, and I have never noticed the bum note at 1:10 before.

I can only think of one word...perfect.

What a gorgeous rich arrangement of this tune--strings, steel guitar, keyboards, even a glockenspiel, and of course Roger's 12-string, Chris's bass and Jim Gordon on drums. Not for nothing was "The Notorious Byrd Brothers" called "the American Sergeant Pepper".

I believe the version by Dusty Springfield was played at her funeral.

the horse is David Crosby in effigy. there was some discord between David and Roger. Today all is well between them.

I used to listen to this album with my brother who was a year older than me back in the 60's. He left this world over 40 years ago. I miss him every day. This music sure takes me back there.

Ahh ethereal Byrds beauty

It's a little known fact that Gene Clark rejoined The Byrds for at least part of this album including this song. There is a video on YouTube of the band performing this tune, and Gene is there, front and center. He accounts for the richness of the vocals here. Love you Gene.

I've heard rumors that Gene sang on this But, I would like to hear Roger or Chris comment.

What was the line up of the band on this album?

The horse played a fucking mean guitar!! A true multi instrumentalist. Genius. Never drank the water though!! Stubborn fuck he was!! ;) Mr Ed used to run his fan club!! That's how fucking good he was!

Nate Herman Believe it was Roger, Chris and Michael, although Michael left during or shortly after the recording as did Gene Clark , who was involved with singing this track. This was the first album without Crosby. Definitely a different sound from anyone else but it certainly grew on me. I am unaware of what part the horse played in the recording.

Crosby's on the album. He sings of 'Tribal gathering'. Jim Gordon played drums on this because Mike had more or less pulled out. And I don't think Gene was ever on this.

Great song written by Carole King and Gerry Goffin and recorded by The Byrds on October 9, 1967.

Beautiful sounds that came out of Laurel Canyon in the '60's. I heard that the Byrds were not within being good musicians at first; LOL.Well they definitely got it together as a folk/rock group.Hillman, McGuinn, Clark not good?!. Opinions do vary.

They made the right choice putting this on the album instead of Crosby's Triad. That's a weird fuckin' tune lol.

Triad is beautiful.
This is the album where Crosby parted ways, I think, and he stayed folky and became even bigger and the Byrds went all country.

i first heard this on the radio and fell in love with it. From the Byrds' BEST album! Carole's versions  on "Writer" and "Pearls" are lovely as well, if far less spacy! Thanks for the upload -- this should have been a HUGE hit in 1968!

Luiz Claudio Cursino Teixeira that’s def8nitely roger McGuin singing the lead. Hillman may be doing the high harmonies, though that could also be Crosby, supposedly gen Clark is also singing and you can hear him a bit in the la la la la part.

@Nick Castillo and then Jefferson Airplane's Grace Slick and Paul Kantner recorded Triad with David.

It sold really well in the UK.....album charts for 9 weeks

One of my favorites from one of the greatest periods in musical history. I'm having this one played at my send-off.
