Byrds, The - Everybody's Been Burned Lyrics

Everybody has been burned before
Everybody knows the pain
Anyone in this place can tell you to your face
Why you shouldn't try to love someone

Everybody knows it never works
Everybody knows and me
I know that door that shuts just before
You get to the dream you see

I know it all too well how to turn, how to run
How to hide behind a bitter wall of blue
But you die inside if you chose to hide
So I guess instead I'll love you

18 years ago God gave me a miracle while this beautiful song played. The wonder and beauty of life eclipse both the tragedy and sorrow. Litlle one, I love you forever...TJ STRUSKA

  7. G.... O....

A great song. As with a few other songs from the era, the title inferred one thing but the song was about something entirely different, similar to Simon & Garfunkel's song Patterns.

1967, you wake up and your 17 years old living an amazing life and you sneak out of your parents house and go to a party w pot good music and happy people...those were the days man I fucking hate that I wasn’t born during this time...maybe one day I’ll go back..

Over 50 years later and this song is still as deep and pure as ever. It never gets old. Amazing

  26. d.... ....

One of the most beautiful songs ever recorded, in my opinion

  27. D.... D....

This is my favourite David Crosby song, closely followed by Guinnevere. Crosby is the best singer in every band he has been in. My god he had a beautiful voice when he was young.

  28. D.... D....

    Such a pure voice

  29. R.... B....

    what a song

  30. d.... s....

Every so called artist and writer with too much ego ,fame, and money, should simply shut up ,retire, and put this on repeat, and weep with remorse and shame, as they marvel at the Oh so real ,hauntingly stunning talent displayed here...remarkable and timeless music.

    d.... s....

David Crosby himself has been judged as having too much ego, fame, and money. I've always liked him as an artist, but have heard negative comments about him as being a jerk in person. He wasn't to my brother who ran into him in Colorado. Crosby graciously took the time to write the chord charts for "Guinevere" for my brother, and even allowed himself to be photographed.

  31. d.... s....

the best bittersweet love song ever recorded...words and superb music expresses what can't be..

  32. R.... B....

    Stuff me this is awsome

  33. G.... C....

Crosby and the boys were teetering on what would be Radiohead would continue and push farther in the rock vein. But rather than a step or two above contemporaneous as bands in more recent times, bands like the Byrds composed and played and in a way matched maybe by The Beatles in the amount of out and exploration with such controlled and constricted time or what the Kinks were trying show in their art producing and releasing what they did. Equal piers, different approaches, yet all helping to buidling a Pyramid of Khufu but by a recorded medium. Timeless....

  36. R.... B....

got a hunch Dave Crosby is more than a tad underrated, what an awesome song, love this

    R.... B....

Richard Bamsey He’s incredibly underrated. His voice is so world class!!!! It’s just stunning; subtle and gentle, but strong too.

  37. S.... L....

I love this song, such a beautiful voice. It's almost haunting,

  40. R.... B....

Whoo kind of what do you say to this, its a time slip thing for me, what a voice, he still has most of it on Croz me Im astounded he has anything left. I just might be whistling in the dark chums

  41. T.... C....

    What tuning is this?

    T.... C....

  42. k.... ....

  48. A.... M....

    Genius...

    A.... M....

    Pure genius. David Crosby.

  49. g.... ....

Maybe it's just me, but it would pretty cool if Ride covered The Byrds someday. Ride loved The Byrds so much, and it would be interesting to see what Ride would do with The Byrds' mid to late 60s output.

    g.... ....

You mean like how The Charlatans (UK) ripped off this song?

  50. T.... ....

It's difficult to imagine something more sophisticated than this.....

    T.... ....

    Indeed. So brilliant.

  51. C.... D....

This song and sound was way ahead of it's time.

    C.... D....

    It was of its time.

    C.... D....

I'm SO tired of reading this comment from young'uns. Because they realize their current musical heroes ripped off the past, then they say the past was ahead of itself, instead of just admitting their heroes aren't original at all.

    C.... D....

  52. m.... ....

even though it got kinda dark towards the end, the 60's must have been incredibly fun to be a pop/rock star.

    m.... ....

Unlike in today's music world, all tattoo'ed and cliched for the most part. Good point.

  53. t.... ....

This was the song that taught seventeen year olds (as I was then) how good a bass guitar could sound.

    t.... ....

You mean a 12 string? The bass guitar is barely audible.

    t.... ....

Hillman is fantastic! Crosby soars, McGuinn's solo is classic. What a perfect song.

  54. D.... R....

Awesome. I really like the Ulver cover too!

    D.... R....

    nobody cares

  55. f.... ....

    the ultimate hippy music?

  56. D.... T....

I thought this was a Sebadoh song!

    D.... T....

Dellan Theye me too. Love this song.

    D.... T....

    That's because you're an idiot

  57. T.... ....

Haunting ballad by David Crosby. Anyone who thinks The Byrds are better without him are crazy....

    T.... ....

The Byrds were so crap without him. Turned into an alt country band. This is such a fantastic song. He is such a genius.

    T.... ....

The Byrds were far worse off for losing Gene Clark than David Crosby.

    T.... ....

That is strictly a matter of opinion Bro....

    T.... ....

mcguinn and crosby had a really good chemistry with mcguinns 12 string and crosby on the 6 and the vocal harmony..so yes, I agree with you. It's a shame those two could not get along, ego's man

    T.... ....

@SuperToombs They are once again good friends.

  58. a.... ....

Some James Bond theme-sounding chords there. ;) I wonder who(or what) influenced who. Also a bit reminiscent of Undun by The Guess Who.

  59. n.... ....

Great great record. Am a big Byrds fan and have never heard this song before so many thanks.

  60. S.... S....

it is really nice old song ...

  61. l.... ....

    Love this song so much.

  62. R.... J....

One of The Byrds' most elegant and wistful songs, I'm astonished that it has been rarely
    covered by other artists.
I can certainly agree with the poignant sentiments.

    R.... J....

Nobody can sing it and play it like Crosby, covering it would be blasphemy.

    R.... J....

    check out the Ulver cover.

    R.... J....

    @Ilo César good norwegian band

    R.... J....

Brendan Perry (of Dead Can Dance) covered it live often in the 90s, but I don’t think he ever recorded it ‘for real’. You can hear good bootlegs though if you search for DCD 4AD archives or something similar. Perry was a big fan of The Byrds as well as Scott Walker, Tim Buckley, and Frank Sinatra. He throws in obscure Byrds covers often when he plays live, but they never seem to make it to any official albums. Bummer! Yeah, love the mystical sound of this song, the walking chord progression and Crosby’s reigned-in vocal create a very cool and unique psychedelic sound.

    R.... J....

@J. Sias Justin, thanks for the recommendation. DCD was a very underrated group, so I
tip my hat to Brendan for good taste. Scott, Tim and Frank are also big favourites of mine
as well. Tim would've done a great version of this song. "Blue Afternoon" is an overlooked
    gem.

  63. D.... P....

They should put that cat on a postage stamp! Beautiful stuff!

  64. M.... F....

Could be David Crosby's best vocal ever. Stunning.

    M.... F....

I love his voice. I love this vocal and the one on "Orleans". What a vocalist.

    M.... F....

Beautiful! I just love David Crosby. Have all of his records, both solo and with Nash, Stills and Young.

    M.... F....

The Byrds and the Doors often shared the stage at the Whisky A go go. Crosby was definitely influenced by Jim Morrison here!

    M.... F....

@@Rocky Racoon If so, not consciously; Crosby has expressed his disdain for Morrison in print, and in song: https://youtu.be/N8Vb8iJ1z8M

    M.... F....

Crosby influenced by Jim Morrison?? Huh?!! They couldn’t be more opposite!!! Dave has such a gentler, more subtle talent and a superior voice. Jim Morrison’s voice is actually rather monotone. It is rich with low end, but it’s not that beautiful.
Crosby is a more of a tenor but a very unusual one.

  65. N.... M....

Chuck Person's Eccojam A5 brought me here.

    @:a ...door.

  66. S.... ....

    Thanks Aquarius

  67. L.... ....

Penned by David Crosby, who left the Byrds and joined with Stephen Stills, Graham Nash, and Neil Young to form Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, after the latter three left the Buffalo Springfield in '67. Critic Thomas Ward has described this song as "one of the most haunting songs in the Byrds' catalogue", and one of David Crosby's finest compositions.

    L.... ....

Nash did not leave Buffalo Springfield, he was in The Hollies before CSN. Also, it was Crosby, Stills & Nash first, and that trio recorded their first album, and then Neil Young joined to make it CSN&Y. Just keeping the history straight.

    L.... ....

    You are correct.

    L.... ....

Also, Crosby did not just leave The Byrds--he was kicked out of The Byrds.

    L.... ....

Only Stills and Young belonged to the Buffalo Springfield. Nash came from another very highly successful band: The Hollies, originally formed in Britain.

  68. M.... M....

  69. J.... S....

This song is as great as +jsilence418 is rude.

  70. T.... R....

    Who is singing?

    T.... R....

@Thomas Radar david crosby is the vocalist on this track.

  71. M.... A....

    Poignant.

  72. j.... ....

An obvious rewrite of  A Gordon Lightfoot song from 1966 called Peaceful Waters.
who is the fucking dim wit who thinks this is as good as any Beatles song lol lol lol

    j.... ....

@jsilence418 And you keep coming back because you are intellectually superior, right? How convenient. The Beatles did a good job at influencing the bands that are actually good. But they were never good. They were the Justin Bieber of the 60´s.

    j.... ....

@ThePhilosorpheus Sure little guy you have no way of conversing because you are young, ignorant and more concerned with how you come off than offering a valid opinion this whole game started with you showing your ignorance and making a fool of yourself I will let your comments stand as a testament, to cluelessness.

    j.... ....

@jsilence418 "who is the fucking dim wit who thinks this is as good as any Beatles song lol lol lol"
And I´m the ignorant clueless immature one making a fool of himself. Don´t be ridiculous. If anything I´m claiming my right to be as ignorant as you were.

    j.... ....

this is as good as any Beatles song

    j.... ....

jsilence418 one of the dmbest comment ive seen in a long time.....they werent copying the Beatles....George copied Mc Guinns guitar riff for Bells of Rhymney on If needed someone...he was a big Byrds admirer...and John and Paul attende several Byrds recording sessions and were highly impressed by Eight Miles High.......and then theres Gene Clark...brilliant songwriter......and of course Crosby DID write this first......youre wrong on just about every point

  73. M.... W....

The band ULVER does an amazing cover of this song! Give a listen

    M.... W....

@Mr Wonderful As does the band Sebadoh, and they take it in a much different direction. Ulver is pretty good, I had never heard them before. Thanks.

    M.... W....

Hey Robert my last name contains all the same letters as yours except for one in the same order.

  74. S.... T....

My favourite Byrds song too - Crosby's voice is unbelievably rich and soulful.

    S.... T....

Steve Taylor His voice is one of the most underrated of all time. It’s absolutely naturally gorgeous. The vibrato is sheer perfection. It’s just such a pure talent.

Besides Eight Miles High, I believe this is my favorite Byrds song.

    W.... S....

Mine are So You Want to be A Rock & Roll Star, and Feel a Whole Lot Better.

  77. m.... ....

Best Byrds album, in my opinion. Followed by Sweetheart of the Rodeo.

  78. R.... M....

    Haunting. the Radman

  79. w.... ....

    signature tune

  80. g.... ....

This song is just as good as anything that the Beatles did, in my opinion. It's a big shame that Younger Than Yesterday didn't sell a lot of copies back in 1967.

  81. Z.... C....

For me, this, "Why" and  "Eight Miles High" are the best work the original Byrds ever did.  The solo is wonderfully constructed, amazing given the limits of Roger McGuinns's technical proficiency.

    Z.... C....

It helps to remember what the spring of 1967 was like for guitarists. Beck and Clapton were at their peak, and then in August this guy called Jimi Hendrix comes along. Two years earlier--about the time of 'Eight Miles High'--Joe Pass records his 12-string guitar album, with more 12-string chops of higher quality than the rest of the planet combined. Roger McGuinn was doing his almighty best to keep up, and on these three songs, he succeeded.

    Z.... C....

McGuinn was very good !!!! He wasn’t doing soaring leads, that wasn’t his thing. But listen to David Crosby talk about how good McGuinn was, and it was certainly ground breaking. Don’t diss Roger.
The Byrds influenced a lot of English bands.
David Crosby brought those beautiful harmonies, as only he can, because the tone and musicality of his voice is off the charts. Wish he’d had more lead singing but he made up for it some in CSN and CSNY.

    Z.... C....

that phrase around 2.10 mins is sublime

    Z.... C....

    Glenlaurel I agree!
