I like this reinterpretation of her own song but it’s not as divine as the original. I like to think of this one as a sequel to the original... when the relationship with the computer becomes toxic and stagnant.

I love the effect of the vocoder during the chorus a lot... and the vocal glitches. I feel like the song could’ve worked better if the drums were taken out, imo.

I honestly wayyyy prefer this version than the old one the poignancy of the song never really struck me until I heard this version. The creepy computerized-voice during the chorus really fits the theme and tone of the song perfectly and I like to think that this is how Kate originally imagined the song in her head when she was writing it (but technology in 1989 didn't permit to put such a voice in a song)

@Pioneer Nut Well, I have to admit I was surprised with some of her choices on The Director's Cut album. I preferred the original Deeper Understanding and the original Sensual World to what they became later. I thought the angelic sound of the Trio Bulgarka in the original was a perfect symbol for the relief and escape the computer brought this tortured person. The computer sound in the later one just sounded a bit lame and prosaic to me.

Well, that took a twisted turn. Yeah, I like the older version better, but I can see why she tried to make it sound more like a computer.

Youtube is the perfect home for this music video about online addiction. Although I prefer the vocals on the 1989 album and love its sensuality, this compressed autotune version is somehow more apt for the message it conveys.

The original is 100 times better than this. It has more mystery, finesse and atmosphere. This sounds like a poor cover of a brilliant song. Sometimes one needs to leave things alone when tampering with ones own/someone else's music when it only results in something less than what existed before. If I wanted to experiment with a great song like this I'd do it as a temporary fun thing to do and leave it at that. I definitely wouldn't record it unless it turned out to kick the arse of the original which this totally doesn't do. I love KB but some people idolise her to the point where EVERYTHING she does is PERFECT regardless and they feel like they're being disloyal if they don't drool over absolutely everything she does, which is bullshit. She is MEGA talented and the whole world knows it and loves her for it. If anyone can take differing opinions about their work with good grace, but a healthy 'I'll do what I want' attitude it's Kate Bush.

Didn't need a redo at all. The original was sooooooo prophetic. Who would have known? This sounds ridiculous, but this rerecording sounds dated. The computer "voice" sounds like something from the '70s.
